Heart Chakra Yoga: 8 Heart-Opening Poses for Love, Grief Release & Anahata Healing

Why Heart-Opening Yoga Heals the Heart Chakra
The heart chakra lives in the chest — and the chest is where the body stores grief, withheld love, and the armor of emotional protection. Years of unexpressed emotion, of hunching forward to protect the heart, of breathing shallowly to avoid feeling — all of this lives in the pectoral muscles, the intercostal muscles, the upper back, and the shoulders. Heart-opening yoga poses work directly with this stored material — creating space in the physical body that allows the emotional and energetic body to release and love again.
The 8 Heart Chakra Yoga Poses
1. Camel Pose (Ustrasana)
Kneel with hips over knees, reach back and hold the heels, opening the chest and throat toward the sky. Camel is one of the most powerful heart-opening poses available — it requires courage (the vulnerability of opening the front body completely) and produces the exhilaration of genuine openness. It is common to feel strong emotion in this pose. That is the heart chakra releasing. Hold 5 breaths, rest in Child's Pose, repeat.
2. Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana)
From lying on your back, plant hands beside your ears and feet flat on the floor, then press up into a full backbend. Wheel is the most complete heart-opening pose — the entire front body open, the heart lifted toward the sky. It requires strength, courage, and trust. Practice only when warmed up, and use a supported version (bridge pose) if full wheel is not yet accessible. Hold 5 breaths.
3. Fish Pose (Matsyasana)
Lie on your back, slide hands under the hips, press the forearms down, and lift the chest while dropping the crown of the head back. Fish Pose opens the chest and throat gently and accessibly — it is the heart-opening pose for those who need gentleness. It also directly opens the lungs, supporting the deep breathing that allows grief to move. Hold 1–2 minutes.
4. Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana)
Lie on your stomach, place hands under the shoulders, and press the chest forward and up. Cobra opens the heart gently from below — it is the foundational heart-opening pose, accessible to almost everyone. Practice with the intention of opening the heart rather than achieving a particular depth. Hold 5 breaths, repeat 3 times.
5. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)
Lie on your back, feet flat on the floor, and press the hips up while opening the chest. Bridge is the accessible backbend — heart-opening without the intensity of Wheel. It strengthens the back body while opening the front, and can be held passively (supported on a block) for a deeply restorative heart chakra practice. Hold 1–3 minutes.
6. Supported Backbend Over Bolster
Place a bolster or rolled blanket horizontally across the mat. Sit in front of it and gently recline back over it, so the bolster supports the upper back and the chest opens passively toward the ceiling. Arms fall open to the sides. This is the most restorative heart-opening practice — completely passive, completely surrendered. Rest 5–10 minutes, breathing into the heart. Allow any emotion that arises to simply be present.
7. Eagle Arms (Garudasana Arms)
Cross one arm under the other at the elbows, wrap the forearms, and lift the elbows to shoulder height. This pose stretches the upper back — the area where the heart chakra's armor is held — creating space between the shoulder blades and releasing the tension of withheld love. Hold 5 breaths each side.
8. Puppy Pose (Uttana Shishosana)
From hands and knees, walk the hands forward and lower the chest toward the floor while keeping the hips over the knees. The chest melts toward the earth in an attitude of surrender and opening. Puppy Pose combines the heart-opening of a backbend with the humility and receptivity of a forward fold — the perfect physical expression of the heart chakra's invitation to open without armor. Hold 2–3 minutes.
Building Your Heart Chakra Yoga Practice
Practice this sequence 3–4 times per week, allowing emotion to arise without trying to manage it. The Lotus Mandala Yoga Mat creates a resonant energetic container for heart chakra work — the lotus of Anahata beneath you as you open your heart above it. For a practice that works with the full chakra system, the Seven Chakras Alignment Yoga Mat maps the complete chakra system beneath your practice.

Key Takeaways
- The chest stores grief and emotional armor — heart-opening yoga directly releases the physical residue of Anahata wounding.
- Camel, Wheel, Fish, Cobra, Bridge, Supported Backbend, Eagle Arms, and Puppy Pose form a complete heart chakra sequence.
- Allow emotion to arise during practice — it is the heart chakra releasing, not a problem to be managed.
- Pairing yoga with heart chakra frequency audio creates a fully integrated healing session.
The heart chakra heals in the body's center — through the courage of opening, the vulnerability of feeling, and the quiet miracle of discovering that the heart, once opened, is larger than you remembered. Step onto your mat. Open your chest. Let love in. And when the tears come, as they often do in this practice, I find comfort in the Void Whisper Audio to help the body surrender fully into release, just as the Inner Sunlight Audio restores that radiant calm afterward. The Sacred Space Cleanse is lovely for washing away the old energy that surfaces, while the Emotional Filter Ritual Kit helps me refine what remains into something tender and true. For deepening the connection to the heart's wisdom between yoga sessions, the Healing Sigil Journal has become a trusted companion for whatever the opened heart wants to speak.
