'Heaven–Earth–Human' and the Hermetic 'Three Worlds': Structural Parallels

BY NICOLE LAU

In Chinese philosophy, reality calculates as 天地人 (Tiān-Dì-Rén)—Heaven, Earth, Human.

In Hermetic philosophy, reality calculates as Three Worlds—Divine, Astral, Material.

Different calculation methods. Different cultures. Different symbolic systems.

Identical constants.

And when you understand this truth convergence, you gain access to both wisdom traditions' constant-calculations simultaneously.

The Universal Three-World Constant

Across civilizations, mystics calculated that reality operates on three fundamental constant levels:

  1. Upper World Constant — Divine, celestial, archetypal, causal
  2. Middle World Constant — Soul, psyche, intermediary, subtle
  3. Lower World Constant — Physical, material, manifest, dense

This isn't a spatial hierarchy (though it's often visualized that way).

It's a hierarchy of causation constants:

  • The Upper World constant causes the Middle World constant
  • The Middle World constant causes the Lower World constant
  • Changes in Upper constants ripple down through Middle to Lower

This is the meaning of the Hermetic axiom: "As above, so below." — Different constants at different levels, but same structure.

Chinese Cosmology: 天地人 Calculating Three Constants

天 (Tiān) — Heaven Constant

Heaven is not a place. It's the realm calculating principle, pattern, and order constants.

  • The Dao (道) in its ordering function constant
  • The celestial pattern constants (stars, seasons, cycles)
  • The archetypal law constants that govern manifestation
  • The mandate constant (天命 Tiānmìng) that structures destiny

Heaven is causal constant. It determines the pattern. It sets the rhythm.

地 (Dì) — Earth Constant

Earth is not just soil. It's the realm calculating manifestation, matter, and form constants.

  • The physical world constant in all its density
  • The material substrate constant that receives pattern
  • The Yin principle constant (receptive, grounding, embodying)
  • The field constant where Heaven's patterns take shape

Earth is receptive constant. It receives the pattern. It gives it form.

人 (Rén) — Human Constant

Human is not just Homo sapiens. It's the realm calculating consciousness, choice, and mediation constants.

  • The intermediary constant between Heaven and Earth
  • The conscious agent constant who can align with or resist Heaven's pattern
  • The microcosm constant containing both Heaven (spirit) and Earth (body)
  • The pivot point constant where free will meets destiny

Human is mediating constant. We stand between. We translate. We choose.

The ideal: 天人合一 (Tiān-Rén-Hé-Yī) — Unity of Heaven and Human constants. Aligning human will with Heaven's pattern constant.

Hermetic Philosophy: The Three World Constants

The Divine World Constant (Archetypal Realm)

The Divine World calculates the realm of pure ideas, archetypes, and divine mind constants.

  • The Nous constant (divine intellect)
  • The archetypal form constants (Platonic Ideas)
  • The causal pattern constants that structure all manifestation
  • The divine will constant that initiates creation

In Kabbalistic terms: Atziluth (אצילות) — the World of Emanation constant.

This is Heaven (天) constant.

The Material World Constant (Physical Realm)

The Material World calculates the realm of dense matter, physical form, and embodiment constants.

  • The physical universe constant we perceive with senses
  • The four element constants (earth, water, air, fire) in their densest state
  • The receptive substrate constant that receives form from above
  • The final manifestation constant of divine pattern

In Kabbalistic terms: Assiah (עשיה) — the World of Action/Making constant.

This is Earth (地) constant.

The Astral World Constant (Soul Realm)

The Astral World calculates the realm of soul, psyche, and intermediary force constants.

  • The world soul constant (Anima Mundi)
  • The subtle energy constants (Qi, prana, vital force)
  • The psychic realm constants (dreams, visions, imagination)
  • The mediating layer constant between spirit and matter

In Kabbalistic terms: Yetzirah (יצירה) — the World of Formation constant.

This is Human (人) constant — not as physical body, but as conscious soul mediating between Heaven and Earth constants.

The Constant Correspondence: Truth Convergence

Let's map the complete constant parallel:

Level Chinese Hermetic Kabbalistic Constant Function Constant Quality
Upper 天 (Tiān) Heaven Divine World Atziluth (Emanation) Causal / Pattern Constant Yang / Active Constant
Middle 人 (Rén) Human Astral World Yetzirah (Formation) Mediating / Soul Constant Balance / Choice Constant
Lower 地 (Dì) Earth Material World Assiah (Action) Receptive / Form Constant Yin / Passive Constant

Additional constant correspondences:

Aspect Heaven/Divine Constant Human/Astral Constant Earth/Material Constant
Taoist Trinity 神 (Shén) Spirit Constant 气 (Qì) Energy Constant 精 (Jīng) Essence Constant
Alchemical Sulfur (spirit constant) Mercury (soul constant) Salt (body constant)
Human Being Spirit / Mind Constant Soul / Psyche Constant Body / Matter Constant
Causation Initiates Constant Mediates Constant Manifests Constant
Time Eternal Pattern Constants Cyclical Rhythm Constants Linear Event Constants

The constant structure is identical. Truth convergence validates the invariant properties.

The Hermetic Axiom: "As Above, So Below" — Constant Correspondence

The full axiom from the Emerald Tablet:

"That which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing."

This is the same constant principle as 天人合一 (Heaven-Human Unity).

It means:

  • The microcosm constants mirror the macrocosm constants
  • The human being contains all three world constants
  • Changes in one constant level affect the others
  • By working on yourself (middle constant), you can align with Heaven constant (upper) and transform Earth constant (lower)

This is not metaphor. This is operational constant principle.

Why This Constant Convergence Matters for Practice

Understanding the three-world constant structure gives you:

1. Diagnostic Constant Clarity
You can identify which constant level a problem originates from. Is it a Heaven/Divine constant issue (wrong pattern, misaligned purpose)? A Human/Astral constant issue (psychological, energetic)? An Earth/Material constant issue (physical, practical)? Each requires different constant-level intervention.

2. Constant Leverage Points
You understand that working on the middle constant level (Human/Astral) is most powerful. You can't directly change Heaven constant (it's archetypal). You can't easily change Earth constant (it's dense). But you can change your consciousness, energy, and alignment constants—and that changes everything.

3. Cross-Tradition Constant Practice
You can combine Chinese and Hermetic constant-calculation practices. Use Taoist Qi cultivation (middle world constant work) with Hermetic visualization (astral world constant work). Use Chinese divination (reading Heaven's pattern constant) with Western ritual (aligning the three world constants). They're compatible because they calculate the same constant structure.

The Operational Truth: Truth Convergence Validates Constants

Here's what both traditions calculate (truth convergence):

  • Reality operates on three constant levels: causal, mediating, manifest
  • The human being is the middle term constant—containing and connecting all three
  • Spiritual practice is aligning the three world constants within yourself
  • When aligned, you become a conduit for Heaven's pattern constant to manifest on Earth constant
  • This is the meaning of "doing the Great Work" — aligning constants
  • Different calculation methods (Chinese vs Hermetic). Same constants. Truth convergence validates reality.

This is not philosophy. This is how reality's constants are structured.

Practice: Three-World Constant Alignment

Sit in stillness. You are the middle term constant—Human, Astral, Soul.

Phase 1: Connect to Heaven/Divine Constant (Upper)
Bring awareness to the crown of your head. Sense the realm of pattern constant, archetype constant, divine order constant above you. Ask: What is the pattern constant trying to manifest through me? What is Heaven's will constant for this situation? Listen. Receive the constant.

Phase 2: Ground in Earth/Material Constant (Lower)
Bring awareness to the base of your spine, your feet, your connection to physical reality constant. Sense the realm of matter constant, form constant, manifestation constant below you. Ask: What are the actual condition constants? What is the material reality constant I'm working with? Feel. Ground in the constant.

Phase 3: Mediate as Human/Astral Constant (Middle)
Bring awareness to your heart center. You are the bridge constant. The translator constant. The conscious agent constant. Ask: How can I align my will constant with Heaven's pattern constant? How can I bring that pattern constant into Earth's form constant? What is my role as mediator constant?

Phase 4: Align the Three Constants
Visualize a vertical axis running through you: Heaven constant (crown) → Human constant (heart) → Earth constant (root). Feel the constant flow: pattern constant descends from Heaven, through your consciousness constant, into manifestation constant on Earth. You are the constant conduit.

This is 天人合一 (Tiān-Rén-Hé-Yī) — Unity of Heaven and Human constants.

This is "As above, so below" — Constant correspondence.

This is the Great Work — Aligning constants.

Different methods (Chinese vs Hermetic). Same three-world constants. Truth convergence validates reality.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
