Hexagram 10 Lu - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Treading

Xiao Xu is the patient accumulation - the dense clouds gathering before the rain; Lu is the careful treading - the joyful, light-footed conduct that navigates the dangerous terrain after the accumulation is complete. Where Xiao Xu accumulates, Lu expresses. Where Xiao Xu waits, Lu moves. Where Xiao Xu refines the outward aspect, Lu enacts it - carefully, respectfully, with the joyful lightness that prevents the tiger from biting. Lu is the hexagram of the person who must tread on the tiger's tail and survive: not through force, not through avoidance, but through the joyful, respectful conduct that the tiger does not find threatening.

This is Part 1 of a 6-part complete guide to Hexagram 10 Lu. Here we decode the symbol itself: its structure, its names, its correspondences, and the deep logic encoded in heaven above lake.

The Six Lines: Reading the Symbol

Hexagram 10 Lu is composed of:

  • Line 6 (Top) - Yang (solid)
  • Line 5 - Yang (solid)
  • Line 4 - Yang (solid)
  • Line 3 - Yin (broken)
  • Line 2 - Yang (solid)
  • Line 1 (Bottom) - Yang (solid)

Binary encoding: 111011 - five yang lines and a single yin line at Line 3. The lower trigram is Dui (Lake/Joyful); the upper trigram is Qian (Heaven/Creative). Lake below, Heaven above: the joyful, open lake beneath the vast, powerful heaven. The small, joyful, yielding quality of the lake treads carefully beneath the great, powerful, creative force of heaven.

The Two Trigrams

  • Lower Trigram: Dui (Lake/Joyful) - solid-solid-broken (110). Lake, the joyful, the open, the pleasurable. Below is the lake: joyful, open, yielding at the top (the broken yin line at Line 3), strong at the base. The joyful quality of Dui is the key to Lu's wisdom: the person who treads on the tiger's tail with joyful lightness - who approaches the dangerous situation with genuine joy and genuine openness rather than with fear or aggression - is the person who survives.
  • Upper Trigram: Qian (Heaven/Creative) - three solid yang lines (111). Heaven, the creative, the strong, the powerful. Above is the full creative force of heaven: powerful, initiating, moving with irresistible strength. The tiger is the image of this powerful creative force: magnificent, dangerous, not to be provoked.

Heaven above Lake below: the vast, powerful heaven above and the small, joyful lake below. The lake does not oppose the heaven; it does not try to match the heaven's power with equal power. Instead, the lake treads carefully beneath the heaven - joyfully, lightly, respectfully - and the heaven does not crush it. This is the structural image of Lu: not the confrontation of equal forces but the careful, joyful treading of the small beneath the great.

The Single Yin Line at Line 3

Lu has only one yin line - Line 3, in the third position from the bottom. This single yin line is the most dangerous position in Lu: the yin line that is in the position of the yang, that is trying to tread where it does not naturally belong. Line 3 is the line of the one-eyed person who thinks they can see clearly, the lame person who thinks they can tread firmly - the person whose self-assessment is dangerously inaccurate. The single yin line at Line 3 is the structural warning of Lu: the person who treads without genuine self-knowledge is the person who treads on the tiger's tail and gets bitten.

The Names of Lu

The Primary Name: Lu

The character Lu means to tread, to walk on, to step on - the act of careful, deliberate movement through terrain that requires attention and respect. Lu also carries the meaning of conduct, behavior, the way one moves through the world - the outward expression of inner character through the specific, concrete actions of daily life. The Lu of Hexagram 10 is both the physical treading (the careful steps on the tiger's tail) and the behavioral conduct (the respectful, joyful way of moving through the world that prevents the tiger from biting).

The character Lu also appears in the compound lüli (to fulfill, to carry out) - the sense of actually doing, actually enacting, actually treading the path rather than merely planning or preparing. The Lu of Hexagram 10 is the enactment of what Xiao Xu has prepared: the actual treading of the path that the patient accumulation of Xiao Xu has made possible.

Treading (Wilhelm/Baynes Translation)

Richard Wilhelm rendered Lu as Treading (Conduct) - capturing the dual meaning of the hexagram: the physical treading of careful steps and the behavioral conduct of respectful, joyful movement through the world. The treading of Lu is not the bold stride of the person who is unaware of the tiger; it is the careful, light, joyful step of the person who is fully aware of the tiger and who moves with the respectful lightness that the tiger does not find threatening.

The Judgment

Treading upon the tail of the tiger. It does not bite the person. Success.

The Judgment of Lu is one of the most vivid and most practically important in the I Ching. Treading upon the tail of the tiger: the situation is genuinely dangerous. The tiger is real; the tail is real; the bite is real. Lu does not minimize the danger; it acknowledges it fully. And then it offers the counsel: it does not bite the person. Success.

How does the person tread on the tiger's tail without being bitten? The answer is in the trigrams: with the joyful lightness of Dui (the lake) rather than the aggressive force of another Qian (another heaven). The tiger that is approached with joyful lightness - with genuine respect, genuine openness, genuine non-threatening conduct - does not bite. The tiger that is approached with aggression, with fear, or with the pretense of equal power is the tiger that bites.

Success: the careful, joyful treading of Lu is not merely survival but genuine success. The person who can tread on the tiger's tail without being bitten - who can navigate the genuinely dangerous situation with joyful, respectful conduct - is the person who achieves genuine success in the most challenging circumstances.

The Image

Heaven above, the lake below: the image of Treading. Thus the superior person discriminates between high and low and thereby fortifies the thinking of the people.

The Image of Lu is one of the most socially and politically significant in the I Ching. Heaven above, the lake below: the natural order of things - the great above, the small below, each in its proper place. The superior person who discriminates between high and low - who understands the natural order of things, who knows what is genuinely great and what is genuinely small, who can navigate the hierarchy of the situation with genuine wisdom - is the person who fortifies the thinking of the people.

The discrimination between high and low in Lu is not the discrimination of social prejudice but the discrimination of genuine wisdom: the ability to recognize what is genuinely powerful (the tiger, the heaven) and what is genuinely small (the lake, the person treading), and to conduct oneself accordingly. The person who mistakes the small for the great (who thinks they can match the tiger's power with equal power) is the person of Line 3, whose self-assessment is dangerously inaccurate. The person who correctly discriminates between high and low - who knows the tiger is the tiger and conducts themselves accordingly - is the person who treads on the tiger's tail without being bitten.

Why Lu Follows Xiao Xu

The Xugua commentary explains: Xiao Xu means stopping. Things cannot stop forever; therefore Xiao Xu is followed by Lu. Lu means treading.

This is a precise philosophical statement: the patient accumulation of Xiao Xu (the stopping, the gentle restraint) must eventually give way to the careful treading of Lu (the enactment, the expression of the accumulated strength). The dense clouds must eventually release their rain; the accumulated strength must eventually be expressed through careful, respectful conduct. Lu is the natural successor of Xiao Xu: the careful treading that enacts what the patient accumulation has prepared.

Lu is also the structural inverse of Xiao Xu (Lu is Xiao Xu turned upside down), confirming the pairing: the patient accumulation (Xiao Xu) and the careful treading (Lu) are the two faces of the same wisdom. Accumulate patiently (Xiao Xu); tread carefully (Lu). The dense clouds gather (Xiao Xu); the rain falls carefully (Lu).

The Opposite and Inverse Hexagram

Opposite Hexagram: Hexagram 15 (Qian, Modesty)

Lu's binary opposite (000100) is Hexagram 15, Modesty - the hexagram of the person who is genuinely great but who conducts themselves with genuine modesty. The opposite of careful treading (Lu) is genuine modesty (Qian): where Lu is the careful conduct of the small in the presence of the great, Qian is the genuine modesty of the great in the presence of the small. Together they define the complete wisdom of proper conduct: the small treads carefully in the presence of the great (Lu), and the great conducts themselves with genuine modesty in the presence of the small (Qian).

Inverse Hexagram: Hexagram 9 (Xiao Xu, Small Taming)

When Lu is turned upside down, it becomes Hexagram 9 (Xiao Xu) - confirming the structural pairing. Lu and Xiao Xu are the same wisdom viewed from different angles: the patient accumulation (Xiao Xu) and the careful treading (Lu) are two expressions of the same fundamental wisdom about the relationship between the small and the great. Accumulate patiently before treading (Xiao Xu); tread carefully after accumulating (Lu).
