Tai is the supreme peace - the moment when the creative and receptive forces are in perfect interpenetration, when the small departs and the great arrives, when the natural flourishing of all things is fully expressed. Pi is the standstill - the moment when the creative and receptive forces are moving apart rather than toward each other, when the great departs and the small arrives, when the natural flourishing of all things is obstructed. Where Tai flourishes freely, Pi withdraws inward. Where Tai unites high and low, Pi separates high and low in the perfect disengagement of heaven above and earth below. Pi is the hexagram of the moment when the forces are moving apart - and the wisdom of how to navigate the time of standstill with genuine nobility and genuine inner cultivation.

The Six Lines: Reading the Symbol

Hexagram 12 Pi is composed of:

  • Line 6 (Top) - Yang (solid)
  • Line 5 - Yang (solid)
  • Line 4 - Yang (solid)
  • Line 3 - Yin (broken)
  • Line 2 - Yin (broken)
  • Line 1 (Bottom) - Yin (broken)

Binary encoding: 111000 - three yin lines below and three yang lines above. The lower trigram is Kun (Earth/Receptive); the upper trigram is Qian (Heaven/Creative). Earth below, Heaven above: the receptive force of earth is moving downward (its natural direction), and the creative force of heaven is moving upward (its natural direction). The two forces are moving away from each other - separating, withdrawing, losing contact - in the perfect disengagement of Pi.

The Two Trigrams

  • Lower Trigram: Kun (Earth/Receptive) - three broken yin lines (000). Earth, the receptive, the yielding, the nurturing force. Below is the full receptive force of earth: yielding, nurturing, moving downward away from the creative heaven above.
  • Upper Trigram: Qian (Heaven/Creative) - three solid yang lines (111). Heaven, the creative, the strong, the initiating force. Above is the full creative force of heaven: powerful, initiating, moving upward away from the receptive earth below.

Heaven above Earth below: this is the natural order of the physical world - and in Pi, it is the order of separation. The creative force of heaven moves upward away from the receptive earth; the receptive force of earth moves downward away from the creative heaven. The two forces are moving apart - separating, withdrawing, losing the genuine exchange and genuine fertilization that produce the natural flourishing of Tai. This is the structural image of standstill: not the dynamic union of heaven and earth in perfect interpenetration (Tai) but the static separation of heaven and earth in perfect disengagement.

The Contrast with Hexagram 11 (Tai, Peace)

The structural opposite of Pi is Hexagram 11 (Tai, Peace): earth above and heaven below (000111). In Tai, the creative force of heaven moves upward toward the receptive earth, and the receptive force of earth moves downward toward the creative heaven. The two forces are moving toward each other - interpenetrating, exchanging, fertilizing each other - in the perfect harmony of Tai. The contrast between Pi (heaven above earth, the forces moving apart) and Tai (earth above heaven, the forces moving toward each other) is the I Ching's most fundamental structural contrast: the contrast between separation and union, between standstill and flourishing, between obstruction and peace.


The Names of Pi

The Primary Name: Pi

The character Pi (否) means obstruction, standstill, negation, blockage - the state in which the natural flow of things is impeded, in which the creative and receptive forces are no longer freely exchanging and freely fertilizing each other. Pi also carries the meaning of denial, refusal, the closing off of the natural channels of exchange. The Pi of Hexagram 12 is the standstill of the moment when the natural order of separation (heaven above, earth below) has reasserted itself, when the creative and receptive forces have withdrawn from each other, when the natural flourishing of all things is obstructed.

The character Pi appears in Chinese compound words that express the idea of negation and obstruction: Pi Ding (negation, denial), Pi Jue (refusal, rejection). The Pi of Hexagram 12 is the hexagram of the natural cycle of obstruction that follows the natural cycle of peace - the inevitable slope that follows the inevitable plain of Tai.

Standstill / Stagnation (Wilhelm/Baynes Translation)

Richard Wilhelm rendered Pi as Standstill (Stagnation) - capturing the essential quality of the hexagram: not the dynamic movement of Tai but the static separation of Pi, the standstill of the moment when the forces have withdrawn from each other and the natural channels of exchange have been closed. The standstill of Pi is not the peace of Tai; it is the obstruction of the natural flow of things, the blockage of the genuine exchange and genuine fertilization that produce the natural flourishing of all things.


The Judgment

Evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior person. The great departs; the small arrives. Misfortune.

The Judgment of Pi is one of the most sobering in the I Ching. Evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior person: in the time of standstill, the small and petty forces (the yin lines below) are in the ascendant, and the great and noble forces (the yang lines above) are withdrawing. The superior person who perseveres in the conduct of the time of peace - who continues to act as if the conditions of Tai are still present when the conditions of Pi have arrived - does not find the support of the time. The great departs: the great, generous, creative forces that enabled the natural flourishing of Tai are departing - withdrawing upward, losing contact with the receptive earth below. The small arrives: the small, petty, obstructive forces that prevent the natural flourishing of things are arriving - the yin lines are ascending, the channels of genuine exchange are closing. Misfortune: the time of Pi is the time of misfortune - not the misfortune of catastrophe but the misfortune of obstruction, the misfortune of the natural flourishing of things being impeded.

The Judgment's counsel is implicit: in the time of Pi, the superior person does not persist in the conduct of the time of Tai. The superior person recognizes the time of Pi and responds accordingly - withdrawing inward, cultivating genuine inner virtue, maintaining genuine integrity in the time of obstruction, and waiting for the natural cycle to turn from Pi back to Tai.


The Image

Heaven and earth do not unite: the image of Standstill. Thus the superior person falls back upon his inner virtue, thereby escaping the difficulties. He does not permit himself to be honored with revenue.

The Image of Pi is one of the most practically important in the I Ching. Heaven and earth do not unite: the creative and receptive forces are not in the genuine exchange and genuine fertilization of Tai but in the static separation of Pi. The superior person falls back upon his inner virtue: the appropriate response to the time of standstill is not the attempt to maintain the conduct of the time of peace through force but the withdrawal into genuine inner virtue - the cultivation of the genuine character that will sustain the superior person through the time of obstruction and prepare them for the return of the time of peace. He does not permit himself to be honored with revenue: the superior person in the time of Pi does not accept the honors and revenues that the small and petty forces of the time offer - does not allow themselves to be co-opted by the forces of obstruction, does not allow the appearance of success in the time of Pi to corrupt their genuine inner virtue.


Correspondences and Associations

Natural World

  • Elements: Heaven (Qian trigram) above Earth (Kun trigram) - the perfect disengagement of the creative and receptive forces
  • Season: Autumn/Winter - the season of withdrawal and inward cultivation, when the creative force of heaven withdraws upward and the receptive force of earth withdraws downward, when the natural growth of things is suspended
  • Time of Day: Midnight - the moment of maximum darkness, when the creative force is most withdrawn and the natural flourishing of things is most suspended
  • Weather: Cold, dry, still - the weather of perfect natural separation, when the creative and receptive forces are most withdrawn from each other and the natural channels of exchange are most closed
  • Landscape: A barren winter landscape where heaven and earth have separated; a frozen river; a field in the depths of winter; a mountain peak above the clouds, separated from the valley below

  • Life Stage: The moment of maximum obstruction - when the patient accumulation and careful treading and supreme peace have given way to the inevitable standstill of the natural cycle
  • Social Situation: Any situation of genuine obstruction and genuine standstill: the organization that is no longer functioning at its peak, the relationship that has lost its genuine exchange, the community that is no longer genuinely thriving, the project that has stalled
  • Virtue: Noble withdrawal, genuine inner cultivation, the refusal to be co-opted by the forces of obstruction, the patience to wait for the natural cycle to turn
  • Shadow: The danger of despair - the person who mistakes the time of Pi for a permanent condition, who loses faith in the natural cycle, who allows the obstruction of Pi to corrupt their genuine inner virtue

Cross-Tradition Correspondences

  • Tarot: The Tower (XVI) - the sudden collapse of the structures that were built on false foundations; The Hermit (IX) - the noble withdrawal into inner cultivation and genuine wisdom during the time of obstruction
  • Astrology: Saturn (the planet of limitation, obstruction, and the discipline of genuine inner cultivation), Capricorn (the sign of the patient, disciplined withdrawal that prepares for the next ascent), the new moon (the moment of maximum darkness that precedes the return of the light)

Why Pi Follows Tai

The Xugua commentary explains: Things cannot remain forever in a state of peace. Therefore Tai is followed by Pi.

This is a precise philosophical statement: the supreme peace of Tai, when it has been fully expressed, gives way to the standstill of Pi. The natural cycle of the I Ching is the cycle of Tai and Pi: the cycle of the creative and receptive forces moving toward each other (Tai) and moving apart (Pi), the cycle of the plain and the slope, the cycle of the great arriving and the great departing. Pi follows Tai as the inevitable slope follows the inevitable plain - not as a punishment or a failure but as the natural expression of the natural cycle of all things.

Pi also follows Tai as the natural consequence of the failure to maintain the conditions of peace: the failure to bear with the uncultured in gentleness, the failure to ford the river with resolution, the failure to attend to the distant, the failure to maintain genuine impartiality, the failure to descend with genuine humility to unite with the lower. The wall that falls into the moat of Tai's Line 6 is the wall of Pi: the conditions of peace have collapsed, and the time of standstill has arrived.


The Opposite and Inverse Hexagram

Opposite Hexagram: Hexagram 11 (Tai, Peace)

Pi's binary opposite (000111) is Hexagram 11, Peace - the hexagram of the perfect harmony of earth above and heaven below, the forces moving toward each other rather than apart. The opposite of standstill (Pi) is supreme peace (Tai): where Pi is the static separation of heaven and earth in perfect disengagement, Tai is the dynamic union of heaven and earth in perfect interpenetration. Together they define the complete cycle of separation and union: the standstill of Pi and the supreme peace of Tai are the two poles of the I Ching's most fundamental dynamic.

Inverse Hexagram: Hexagram 11 (Tai, Peace)

When Pi is turned upside down, it also becomes Hexagram 11 (Tai, Peace) - confirming the profound structural relationship between Pi and Tai. Pi and Tai are the same hexagram viewed from opposite directions: the standstill of Pi (heaven above earth, the forces moving apart) and the supreme peace of Tai (earth above heaven, the forces moving toward each other) are the two faces of the same fundamental dynamic. The I Ching consistently pairs Pi and Tai as the most fundamental pair of opposites: the pair that defines the complete cycle of separation and union, standstill and flourishing, obstruction and peace.
