Hexagram 14 Da You - Complete Guide Part 3: Divination Guide — How to Read Great Possession in Practice

Da You is one of the most auspicious hexagrams in the I Ching — but it is also one of the most demanding to read accurately, because genuine great possession is inseparable from genuine inner virtue. This guide gives you the practical framework for reading Da You accurately in any divination context.

What Da You Is Actually Telling You

Before reading the lines, establish the fundamental orientation of Da You. The hexagram is not simply saying “you will be rich” or “you will succeed.” It is saying: the conditions for genuine great possession are present — but genuine great possession requires genuine inner virtue. The quality of the inner virtue is the central question of every Da You reading.

The core message of Da You in any reading: genuine great possession is available — but it comes to the person who holds it lightly, uses it for the genuine common good, and maintains genuine inner virtue in the time of abundance.

Questions Da You Answers Best

  • Abundance and prosperity: “Will this venture succeed?” — Da You affirms the conditions for genuine great possession, with the caveat that genuine inner virtue is required.
  • Stewardship and responsibility: “How should I manage this abundance / resource / opportunity?” — Da You gives the precise intelligence of genuine stewardship: hold it lightly, use it for the common good, maintain genuine discernment.
  • Leadership and authority: “How should I lead in this position of great responsibility?” — Da You's Line 5 (accessible yet dignified) is the precise answer.
  • Generosity and sharing: “How much should I share / give / distribute?” — Da You's Line 4 (genuine discernment) and Line 3 (the prince's offering) give the precise intelligence of genuine generosity.
  • Recognition and blessing: “Why is this going so well?” — Da You's Line 6 (blessed by heaven) is the answer: the natural consequence of genuine inner virtue.
  • Avoiding corruption: “How do I maintain genuine integrity in the time of great success?” — Da You's entire structure is the answer: remain conscious of difficulty (Line 1), hold it lightly (Line 5), offer it to the highest (Line 3).

What Da You Is Not Saying

  • Da You does not mean effortless abundance. The great wagon of Line 2 requires genuine capacity; the prince's offering of Line 3 requires genuine inner virtue; the accessible yet dignified truth of Line 5 requires genuine cultivation. Da You's supreme success is the natural consequence of genuine inner virtue, not a windfall.
  • Da You does not mean unlimited sharing. Line 4's genuine discernment — making a difference between oneself and one's neighbor — is the wisdom of genuine stewardship. Indiscriminate sharing dissipates the great possession of Da You.
  • Da You does not mean arrogance is acceptable. The greatest danger of Da You is the arrogance that comes with great possession — the loss of the genuine inner virtue that attracted the great possession in the first place. Line 5's accessible yet dignified truth is the antidote.
  • Da You does not mean the abundance is permanent. The natural cycle continues: Da You gives way to Qian (Modesty, Hexagram 15) in the natural sequence. The person who maintains genuine inner virtue in Da You prepares for the natural cycle that follows.

Reading Da You Without Moving Lines

When Da You appears with no moving lines, the hexagram speaks in its full, undivided voice. The situation is clearly and completely in the time of genuine great possession. The reading is unambiguous:

  • The conditions for genuine great possession are fully present
  • Supreme success — the natural cycle is at its most auspicious
  • The great possession is genuine — grounded in genuine inner virtue and genuine fellowship
  • Maintain genuine inner virtue: remain conscious of difficulty, hold the possession lightly, use it for the genuine common good
  • The blessing of heaven is available to the person who maintains genuine inner virtue in the time of great possession

No moving lines means: the great possession is genuine and the time is supremely auspicious — move forward with the confidence of the person who understands that genuine abundance is the natural consequence of genuine inner virtue.

The Six Moving Lines: What Each Means in Practice

Line 1 Moving — No Relationship with What Is Harmful

Changing hexagram: Hexagram 50 Ding (The Cauldron)

The humble beginning free of harm — and the changing hexagram Ding (The Cauldron) reveals the nature of the genuine great possession that is being prepared. The cauldron is the image of the vessel that transforms raw material into nourishment — the genuine inner virtue that transforms the humble beginning of Da You into the great possession of the cauldron's nourishment. Remain conscious of difficulty; the cauldron is being prepared.

Practical guidance: The humble beginning is free of harm. The cauldron of genuine transformation is being prepared. Remain conscious of difficulty — the great possession is coming.

Line 2 Moving — The Great Wagon

Changing hexagram: Hexagram 30 Li (The Clinging / Fire)

The great wagon of genuine capacity — and the changing hexagram Li (Fire, Clarity) reveals the quality of the genuine inner virtue that makes the great wagon possible. The double fire of Li is the image of the genuine clarity that illuminates all things: the great wagon of Da You is the wagon of genuine clarity, the genuine understanding that can carry the weight of great possession without being overwhelmed by it.

Practical guidance: The great wagon is ready. The clarity of Li — genuine understanding — is the foundation of the genuine capacity to carry great possession. Undertake the great project.

Line 3 Moving — The Prince's Offering

Changing hexagram: Hexagram 38 Kui (Opposition)

The prince's offering to the Son of Heaven — and the changing hexagram Kui (Opposition) is the warning: the offering of great possession to the highest authority requires the genuine inner virtue that can navigate the opposition of those who would rather keep the great possession for themselves. A petty person cannot do this — and the opposition of Kui is the test of genuine inner virtue in the time of the offering.

Practical guidance: Hold the great possession in trust for the genuine common good. Navigate the opposition of Kui with genuine inner virtue. A petty person cannot do this — but you can.

Line 4 Moving — Making a Difference

Changing hexagram: Hexagram 1 Qian (The Creative)

Genuine discernment in the time of great possession — and the changing hexagram Qian (The Creative) is the most powerful possible affirmation of the genuine inner virtue that makes genuine discernment possible. The pure yang of Qian is the creative force that is available to the person who exercises genuine discernment in the time of great possession: the person who makes genuine distinctions finds the creative force of Qian available to them.

Practical guidance: Exercise genuine discernment. Make genuine distinctions. The creative force of Qian is available to the person who stewards great possession with genuine wisdom.

Line 5 Moving — Accessible Yet Dignified

Changing hexagram: Hexagram 43 Guai (Breakthrough)

The ruler's genuine inner virtue — and the changing hexagram Guai (Breakthrough) reveals the nature of the good fortune that comes to the ruler whose truth is accessible yet dignified. The breakthrough of Guai is the natural consequence of the genuine inner virtue of Line 5: the accessible yet dignified truth of the ruler breaks through all obstacles and finds the supreme good fortune of Da You.

Practical guidance: Be accessible yet dignified. The breakthrough of Guai is the natural consequence of the genuine inner virtue of the ruler. Good fortune.

Line 6 Moving — Blessed by Heaven

Changing hexagram: Hexagram 34 Da Zhuang (The Power of the Great)

The supreme good fortune of heaven's blessing — and the changing hexagram Da Zhuang (The Power of the Great) reveals the nature of the power that comes with heaven's blessing. The great power of Da Zhuang is the power of the person who is blessed by heaven: the power that is available to the person whose genuine inner virtue has attracted the blessing of heaven. Good fortune — nothing that does not further.

Practical guidance: You are blessed by heaven. The great power of Da Zhuang is available. Receive the blessing with genuine gratitude. Good fortune — nothing that does not further.

Five-Step Practical Reading Framework

  1. Confirm the quality of the possession: Is the great possession genuine — grounded in genuine inner virtue and genuine fellowship? Or is it the narrow possession of the clan — the abundance that is seized rather than received?
  2. Assess the stewardship: Is the great possession being held lightly — in trust for the genuine common good? Or is it being grasped — treated as personal property rather than a trust?
  3. Read the stage of abundance: Which stage of Da You is the situation in — the humble beginning (Line 1), the great capacity (Line 2), the offering (Line 3), the discernment (Line 4), the ruler's virtue (Line 5), or the blessing of heaven (Line 6)?
  4. Check the changing hexagram: What does the changing hexagram reveal about the specific quality of the great possession and the specific path of genuine stewardship?
  5. Apply the standard of genuine inner virtue: Does the great possession meet the standard of genuine inner virtue — accessible yet dignified, held lightly, used for the genuine common good?

Three Example Readings

Example 1: Business — “Should I take this investment?”

Result: Da You with Line 2 moving → Hexagram 30 Li

Reading: The investment is the great wagon of Da You — the genuine capacity to carry great possession. The changing hexagram Li says: the clarity of genuine understanding is the foundation of the genuine capacity to carry this investment. Undertake the great project — the great wagon is ready, and the clarity of Li illuminates the path.

Example 2: Leadership — “How do I lead this team through a period of great success?”

Result: Da You with Line 5 moving → Hexagram 43 Guai

Reading: The leadership of Da You requires the accessible yet dignified truth of Line 5. The changing hexagram Guai says: the breakthrough of genuine leadership is the natural consequence of the accessible yet dignified truth of the ruler. Be accessible to all who approach with genuine inner virtue; maintain genuine dignity. The breakthrough of Guai is the natural consequence.

Example 3: Personal — “Why is everything going so well right now?”

Result: Da You with Line 6 moving → Hexagram 34 Da Zhuang

Reading: You are blessed by heaven — the natural consequence of the genuine inner virtue that has been cultivated through the journey of Da You. The changing hexagram Da Zhuang says: the great power of Da Zhuang is available to the person who is blessed by heaven. Receive the blessing with genuine gratitude. Good fortune — nothing that does not further.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
