Hexagram 19: Lin (Approach, 临) - Leadership and Advancement

BY NICOLE LAU

Lin (临, Approach) is Hexagram 19 in the I Ching, following Gu (Work on the Decayed). With binary encoding 000011, Lin represents approach, advancement, and emerging leadership. This is not distant authority but close engagement - the leader who approaches the people, the spring that approaches bringing growth, the opportunity that approaches requiring action. Understanding Lin is understanding that leadership requires presence and engagement, that advancement comes through approaching challenges directly, and that timing is crucial for seizing opportunities.

Traditional Interpretation

Classical I Ching texts describe Lin as "Approach" or "Nearing." The character 临 depicts looking down from above with presence - approaching, overseeing, being present. Key attributes: Approach (接近, jie jin) - coming near, advancing. Leadership (领导, ling dao) - being present with people. Advancement (进展, jin zhan) - moving forward, growth. Engagement (参与, can yu) - active involvement, not distant. The Judgment: "Approach has supreme success. Perseverance furthers. When the eighth month comes, there will be misfortune." Great success now, but recognize limits - after eight months (peak), decline begins. The Image: "The earth above the lake: the image of Approach. Thus the superior person is inexhaustible in his will to teach, and without limits in his tolerance and protection of the people." Earth above lake - nourishing, supportive. Leader teaches and protects without limit.

Binary Encoding: 000011

In binary: 000011. In decimal: 3. Structure: Lines 1-2: Yang-Yang (11) - strong foundation, emerging leadership. Lines 3-6: Yin-Yin-Yin-Yin (0000) - receptive above. Two yang at bottom - leadership emerging from below, approaching upward. Yin dominance above - space for growth, receptivity to leadership. This is the structure of approach: emerging strength (yang at 1-2) advancing into receptive space (yin above). Leadership rising, opportunity opening.

Yin-Yang Dynamics

Two yang at bottom - emerging leadership, growing strength. Yin dominance above - receptive space allowing advancement. Earth above Lake - Lin's upper trigram is Kun (Earth, ☷, 000), lower is Dui (Lake, ☱, 011). Earth above lake - earth nourishes, lake provides. Leader approaches people with nourishment and support. Joyful (lake) leadership under receptive (earth) conditions.

Modern Applications

Leadership: Engaged leadership - Lin is leader who approaches people directly, not distant. Management by walking around - being present, visible, accessible. Mentorship - approaching students/mentees with teaching and support. Business: Market entry - approaching new markets, advancing into opportunities. Growth phase - expanding, moving forward. Seizing opportunities - recognizing and acting on favorable timing. Personal: Taking initiative - approaching challenges, opportunities directly. Engagement - being present, involved, not passive. Growth mindset - advancing, learning, developing.

Systems Science Framework

Lin is growth phase - system expanding, advancing. Positive feedback dominance - success breeds success, growth accelerates. Window of opportunity - favorable conditions won't last forever (eighth month warning). Phase transition - from preparation to action, from potential to actualization. Network expansion - approaching and connecting with new nodes.

Practical Guidance

When Lin appears: Time to approach and advance. Take initiative. Engage directly. Lead with presence. Seize opportunities. But recognize limits - growth phase is temporary (eighth month). Prepare for eventual shift. Be inexhaustible in teaching, unlimited in protecting. Approach with nourishment and support, not domination. This is favorable time - use it wisely.

Conclusion

Lin (000011) teaches: Leadership requires presence and engagement. Advancement comes through approaching directly. Seize opportunities during favorable timing. But recognize limits - growth phases are temporary. Prepare for eventual change. Teach inexhaustibly, protect without limits. After fixing decay (Gu) comes approach and advancement (Lin). This is the progression: repair creates foundation for growth. Leadership emerges. Opportunities open. Advance wisely.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
