Hexagram 22 Bi - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Grace
Bi is the I Ching’s great hexagram of grace — of the genuine beauty that emerges when inner virtue finds its outer expression, when the fire of genuine inner light illuminates the mountain of genuine outer form. The character bi (贲) carries the meaning of adornment, grace, elegance — the image of the cowrie shell, the ancient symbol of beauty and value, adorning the person of genuine inner virtue. Bi is the natural complement of Shi He (Biting Through, Hexagram 21): where Shi He removes the obstacle that prevents genuine union through decisive action, Bi adorns the genuine union that decisive action makes possible with the genuine grace that genuine inner virtue expresses.
The Structure of Bi
Binary and Trigram
Bi is Hexagram 22 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 100101 — the inverse of Shi He (101001). This structural relationship between Bi and Shi He is the I Ching’s most direct expression of the natural cycle of decisive action and genuine grace: the decisive action that bites through the obstacle (Shi He) finds the genuine grace that genuine union makes possible (Bi). The single yang line in the second position — the fire of genuine inner light rising from below — is the structural key of Bi: the genuine inner virtue that illuminates the outer form of genuine grace.
The Two Trigrams
-
Lower trigram: Li (離) — Fire, Clarity, Clinging
Fire is the image of genuine clarity — the quality that illuminates all things, that sees clearly the genuine nature of things, that provides the genuine light that genuine grace requires. In Bi, the fire of genuine clarity is in the lower position: the genuine inner light that illuminates the outer form of genuine grace from below. Genuine grace is grounded in genuine inner light — the fire of genuine clarity that illuminates the mountain of genuine outer form. -
Upper trigram: Gen (艮) — Mountain, Stillness, Keeping Still
Mountain is the image of genuine stillness — the quality that keeps still, that does not move unnecessarily, that provides the genuine stability that genuine grace requires. In Bi, the mountain of genuine stillness is above the fire of genuine inner light: the genuine outer form that is illuminated by the genuine inner light of the fire below. Genuine grace is the mountain illuminated by the fire: the genuine outer form that expresses the genuine inner light.
The Image: Fire at the Foot of the Mountain
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “Fire at the foot of the mountain: the image of Grace. Thus does the superior man proceed when clearing up current affairs. But he dare not decide controversial issues in this way.”
Fire at the foot of the mountain is the image of genuine grace: the genuine inner light that illuminates the outer form of the mountain from below, that adorns the mountain with the genuine beauty of genuine inner virtue. The superior person who proceeds when clearing up current affairs — but dares not decide controversial issues in this way — is the practical wisdom of Bi: genuine grace is appropriate for the adornment of genuine union, not for the decisive action that bites through genuine wrong. Bi adorns; Shi He decides.
The Judgment: Grace Has Success
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Grace has success. In small matters it is favorable to undertake something.”
Bi’s judgment is gentle and practical: grace has success. The genuine grace that adorns genuine union with the genuine beauty of genuine inner virtue has success. In small matters it is favorable to undertake something: the genuine grace of Bi is appropriate for small matters — the adornment of genuine union, the expression of genuine inner virtue in genuine outer form. Bi is not the hexagram of great decisive action (that is Shi He) but the hexagram of genuine grace: the gentle, beautiful expression of genuine inner virtue in genuine outer form.
The Central Teaching: Inner Light Illuminating Outer Form
The central teaching of Bi is the relationship between inner light and outer form: genuine grace is not the imposition of outer ornament on inner emptiness but the natural expression of genuine inner virtue in genuine outer form. The fire at the foot of the mountain does not impose its light on the mountain from outside — it illuminates the mountain from below, revealing the genuine beauty that the mountain already possesses. This is the central teaching of Bi: genuine grace is the revelation of genuine inner virtue, not the concealment of genuine inner emptiness.
The most important practical implication of this teaching is the distinction between genuine grace (the natural expression of genuine inner virtue in genuine outer form) and the performance of grace (the imposition of outer ornament on inner emptiness). The person who adorns genuine inner virtue with genuine outer form finds the success of Bi; the person who imposes outer ornament on inner emptiness finds the warning of Line 6: simple white grace — the return to genuine inner virtue that genuine grace requires.
The Natural Sequence: From Shi He to Bi
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “Things cannot be bited through crudely. Hence after Shi He comes Bi.” The natural sequence from Shi He (Biting Through) to Bi (Grace) is the I Ching’s account of how genuine grace emerges from genuine decisive action: the person who bites through the obstacle with genuine decisive action (Shi He) finds the genuine grace that genuine union makes possible (Bi). Genuine grace is the natural adornment of genuine union.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 21 Shi He (Biting Through) — Bi and Shi He are paired: genuine grace (Bi) and genuine biting through (Shi He) are the two faces of the same genuine inner virtue.
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 21 Shi He (Biting Through) — the inverse of Bi is Shi He: the mountain above fire (Bi) inverted becomes the fire above thunder (Shi He).
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 40 Jie (Deliverance) — the nuclear hexagram of Bi is Jie. The genuine grace of Bi contains within itself the seeds of the genuine deliverance that genuine grace makes possible: the release from the obstacle that genuine decisive action has bitten through.
