Hexagram 25 Wu Wang - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Innocence
Wu Wang is the I Ching’s great hexagram of innocence — of the pure, spontaneous action that flows from genuine inner virtue without calculation, without ulterior motive, without the distortion of personal desire. The character wu (无) means without, not having; the character wang (妄) means falsehood, deception, going astray. Together, wu wang (无妄) means without falsehood, without going astray — the image of the person who acts with genuine innocence, whose action is the pure expression of genuine inner virtue without the distortion of personal calculation. Wu Wang is one of the most profound hexagrams in the I Ching: the genuine innocence that acts without falsehood is the foundation of all genuine success.
The Structure of Wu Wang
Binary and Trigram
Wu Wang is Hexagram 25 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 111001 — three yang lines above, then a yin line, then a yang line at the bottom. The first line — a yang line in the position of the beginning — is the structural key of Wu Wang: the genuine arousing force of thunder that initiates genuine action from below, the pure spontaneous energy that is the foundation of genuine innocence. The three yang lines of heaven above express the genuine strength and genuine clarity of heaven: the genuine creative force that acts without falsehood, without calculation, without ulterior motive.
The Two Trigrams
-
Lower trigram: Zhen (震) — Thunder, Arousing, Movement
Thunder is the image of the genuine arousing force that moves all things — the sudden, decisive energy that breaks through stagnation and initiates genuine movement. In Wu Wang, the thunder of genuine arousing force is in the lower position: the pure spontaneous energy that initiates genuine action from below, the genuine innocence that acts without calculation. The thunder of Wu Wang is the thunder of genuine innocence: the pure, spontaneous energy that acts without falsehood. -
Upper trigram: Qian (乾) — Heaven, Creative, Strength
Heaven is the image of the genuine creative force — the quality that creates all things without calculation, that acts with genuine strength and genuine clarity without ulterior motive. In Wu Wang, the heaven of genuine creative force is above the thunder of genuine arousing force: the genuine creative strength that acts without falsehood, the genuine clarity that illuminates genuine action without the distortion of personal calculation. The heaven of Wu Wang is the heaven of genuine innocence: the pure creative force that acts without falsehood.
The Image: Under Heaven Thunder Rolls
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “Under heaven thunder rolls: everything in nature acts in accordance with its innate character. Thus the kings of old, rich in virtue and in harmony with the time, fostered and nourished all beings.”
Under heaven, thunder rolls: everything in nature acts in accordance with its innate character — the image of genuine innocence. The tree grows upward without calculation; the river flows downward without ulterior motive; the thunder rolls without falsehood. The kings of old who fostered and nourished all beings — who acted in harmony with the time, rich in virtue — are the political expression of Wu Wang: the genuine innocence that acts without falsehood, that fosters and nourishes all beings without personal calculation.
The Judgment: Supreme Success
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Innocence. Supreme success. Perseverance furthers. If someone is not as he should be, he has misfortune, and it does not further him to undertake anything.”
Wu Wang’s judgment is one of the most powerful in the I Ching: supreme success. The genuine innocence that acts without falsehood has supreme success. Perseverance furthers: the genuine innocence of Wu Wang requires genuine perseverance — the genuine commitment to acting without falsehood that genuine innocence requires. If someone is not as he should be, he has misfortune: the most important warning of Wu Wang — the person who acts with falsehood, who goes astray from genuine innocence, finds misfortune. And it does not further him to undertake anything: the person who has gone astray from genuine innocence finds that it does not further to undertake anything.
The Central Teaching: Action Without Falsehood
The central teaching of Wu Wang is the nature of genuine innocence: action without falsehood, action without ulterior motive, action without the distortion of personal calculation. The person of genuine innocence does not act in order to achieve a specific result; they act because the action is the pure expression of genuine inner virtue. The result follows naturally — supreme success — not because the person calculated the result but because the genuine innocence of the action naturally attracts the genuine success that genuine inner virtue makes possible.
The most important practical implication of this teaching is the distinction between genuine innocence (action without falsehood, the pure expression of genuine inner virtue) and the performance of innocence (the calculated imitation of innocence for personal advantage). The person who acts with genuine innocence finds supreme success; the person who performs innocence for personal advantage finds misfortune.
The Natural Sequence: From Fu to Wu Wang
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “Return leads to freedom from error. Hence after Fu comes Wu Wang.” The natural sequence from Fu (Return) to Wu Wang (Innocence) is the I Ching’s account of how genuine innocence emerges from genuine return: the person who returns to genuine inner virtue (Fu) finds the genuine innocence that acts without falsehood (Wu Wang). Genuine innocence is the natural expression of genuine return: the person who has returned to the source of genuine inner virtue acts with the genuine innocence of Wu Wang.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 26 Da Xu (The Taming Power of the Great) — Wu Wang and Da Xu are paired: genuine innocence (Wu Wang) and the taming power of the great (Da Xu) are the two faces of the same genuine inner virtue.
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 26 Da Xu (The Taming Power of the Great) — the inverse of Wu Wang is Da Xu: the heaven above thunder (Wu Wang) inverted becomes the mountain above heaven (Da Xu).
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 53 Jian (Development / Gradual Progress) — the nuclear hexagram of Wu Wang is Jian. The genuine innocence of Wu Wang contains within itself the seeds of the genuine gradual progress that genuine innocence makes possible: the natural, unhurried development that flows from genuine action without falsehood.
