Hexagram 30 Li - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of The Clinging (Fire)
Li is one of the most intellectually and spiritually profound hexagrams in the I Ching — the hexagram of light, clarity, consciousness, and the inescapable dependency of all shining things on the fuel that sustains them. The character li (离) means fire, the sun, lightning, and net, but its core philosophical meaning is "the clinging." Just as fire has no independent form and must cling to wood to burn, and just as the sun must cling to the sky to shine, human consciousness and clarity must cling to something solid to endure. Li is the thirtieth hexagram, closing the first half of the I Ching (the Upper Canon), representing the ultimate illumination that comes from understanding our dependencies.
The Structure of Li
Binary and Trigram
Li is Hexagram 30 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 101101 — a yin line enclosed by two yang lines, repeated twice. The structural key of Li is the single yielding yin line trapped between the strong yang lines: genuine receptivity surrounded by energy, the hollow center that allows the fire to breathe. The repetition of the structure (101, 101) represents the continuous nature of light: it must be constantly fed to keep burning.
The Two Trigrams
-
Lower trigram: Li (離) — Fire, Clarity, Clinging
In the lower position, Li represents the inner light, the personal consciousness, the flame that is just beginning to take hold of its fuel. It is the genuine inner clarity that recognizes its own limits and dependencies. -
Upper trigram: Li (離) — Fire, Clarity, Clinging
The upper trigram repeats the lower: fire above fire. This represents the outer light, the sun illuminating the world, the clarity that extends outward to guide others. The doubling of Li signifies that inner clarity must manifest as outer illumination, but both remain entirely dependent on what they cling to.
The Image: Light Rising Twice
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “That which is bright rises twice: the image of Fire. Thus the great man, by perpetuating this brightness, illumines the four quarters of the world.”
Light rising twice is the image of sustained consciousness. A single flash of lightning is brilliant but fleeting; the sun rising day after day is lasting illumination. The great person perpetuates this brightness not by burning hotter, but by maintaining a steady, sustainable connection to their source of fuel (inner virtue, nature, tradition). By doing so, they provide consistent, reliable light to the world.
The Judgment: Success Through Yielding
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “The Clinging. Perseverance furthers. It brings success. Care of the cow brings good fortune.”
Li’s judgment is deceptively gentle for a hexagram about fire. Perseverance furthers, bringing success. But the key to this success is the "care of the cow." The cow is the ultimate symbol of extreme docility and yielding. Fire, which seems so active and aggressive (yang), is actually dependent and yielding (yin) at its core. If fire does not yield to its fuel, it burns itself out instantly. The success of Li comes from embracing docility — recognizing that our brilliance depends entirely on nurturing the mundane, earthly things that sustain us.
The Clinging Fire: The Central Image of Li
The central image of Li is the flame clinging to the log. Fire is the most paradoxical of the elements. It appears to be pure energy, pure action, pure spirit. Yet, unlike earth, water, or mountain, it has no body of its own. It exists only by consuming something else.
In human terms, Li represents the intellect, the ego, and consciousness itself. The mind feels like an independent, soaring thing, but the wisdom of Li is the realization that the mind must cling to the body, to reality, to truth, and to the community. When consciousness tries to exist without clinging to reality, it becomes a destructive, unmoored wildfire. When it clings to the correct things (virtue, truth, care of the cow), it becomes a guiding light.
The Natural Sequence: From Kan to Li
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “Things cannot be forever in the abyss. Hence there follows Li. Li means clinging.” The natural sequence from Kan (The Abysmal Water, Hexagram 29) to Li (The Clinging Fire, Hexagram 30) is the I Ching’s ultimate statement on the human condition. The first half of the I Ching ends with these two pure, elemental forces. We fall into the terrifying, objective danger of the abyss (Kan), and the only way we survive is by finding the inner light, the consciousness that clings to truth (Li) to illuminate the darkness.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 29 Kan (The Abysmal) — Li (Fire) and Kan (Water) form the central axis of the I Ching. Kan is the dark danger we fall into; Li is the bright consciousness we must cultivate to see our way out.
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 30 Li is its own inverse (the structure is symmetrical: 101101). Like Kan, Da Guo, and Yi, its symmetry means that the principle of clinging/dependency is universal and inescapable. No matter how you look at fire, it must cling to burn.
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 28 Da Guo (Preponderance of the Great) — the nuclear hexagram of Li is Da Guo. This reveals the hidden danger within Li: fire, if left unchecked, leads to a preponderance of energy that will break the structure (Da Guo). The light must be carefully tended so it does not become a forest fire.
