Hexagram 31 Xian - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Influence
With Hexagram 31, Xian, we cross a major threshold in the I Ching. The first 30 hexagrams (the Upper Canon) deal primarily with the foundational forces of heaven, earth, and the cosmos. Xian begins the Lower Canon, which focuses on human relationships, society, and the heart. Xian translates literally as "all" or "universal," but in the context of the I Ching, it means Influence, Mutual Attraction, Wooing, or Sensation. It is the hexagram of magnetic resonance — the unspoken, intuitive pull between two complementary forces that creates genuine connection.
The Structure of Xian
Binary and Trigram
Xian is Hexagram 31 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 001110 — two yin lines at the bottom, two yang lines in the middle, and two yin lines at the top. The structural key of Xian is the empty center (the yin lines at the very top and bottom framing the solid yang core). This structure represents a heart that is open and receptive on the outside, yet firm and true on the inside — the necessary condition for genuine mutual attraction.
The Two Trigrams
-
Lower trigram: Gen (艮) — Mountain, Stillness, Keeping Still
In the family of trigrams, Gen represents the youngest son. Philosophically, it represents stillness, grounding, and inner quiet. In Xian, the mountain provides the solid, unmoving foundation. The quiet mountain lowers itself to receive the moisture of the lake above it. This stillness is not rigid; it is the humble patience required to attract another. -
Upper trigram: Dui (兌) — Lake, Joy, Openness
Dui represents the youngest daughter. It is the image of joy, open communication, and cheerful receptivity. The lake rests upon the mountain, keeping the mountain moist and fertile, while the mountain gives the lake a secure basin to rest within. The joy of the upper trigram responds naturally to the quiet strength of the lower trigram.
The Image: A Lake on the Mountain
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “A lake on the mountain: the image of Influence. Thus the superior man encourages people to approach him by his readiness to receive them.”
A lake on a mountain creates a profound ecosystem of mutual benefit. The mountain’s depression humbly holds the water, and the water’s moisture seeps downward to nourish the mountain’s soil. The superior person models this by keeping their mind "empty" — free from arrogance, prejudice, or forceful demands. By demonstrating a quiet, humble readiness to receive others, they exert a magnetic influence that words or coercion could never achieve.
The Judgment: Success Through Perseverance
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Influence. Success. Perseverance furthers. To take a maiden to wife brings good fortune.”
Xian’s judgment is highly auspicious but comes with a specific condition: perseverance. Mutual attraction is natural and spontaneous, but to turn a sudden spark into a lasting union requires correct conduct. "To take a maiden to wife" represents the formal, respectful, and culturally appropriate way to unite two forces. Influence must not be manipulative or hasty; it must follow the proper, respectful path (perseverance). When genuine attraction is paired with honorable intentions, the result is good fortune.
The Central Teaching: Resonance Over Coercion
The central teaching of Xian is the power of non-verbal resonance. The I Ching observes that when a lute string is plucked, a similar string across the room will vibrate without being touched. This is Xian. It is the law of mutual attraction in nature and human affairs.
True influence does not happen through argument, force, or conscious manipulation. It happens when the lower force (the young man/the mountain) humbles itself to serve the upper force (the young woman/the lake). In ancient Chinese custom, the man took the initiative in wooing by showing profound respect and lowering himself before the woman’s family. This humility triggers a joyful response. The lesson is universal: to influence others, you must first empty your own cup to receive them.
The Natural Sequence: From Li to Xian
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) explains the transition from the Upper to the Lower Canon: “After there are heaven and earth, there are individual things. After things, there are male and female. After male and female, there are husband and wife.” The Upper Canon ended with Li (The Clinging Fire, Hexagram 30), representing consciousness and dependency. The Lower Canon begins with Xian (Influence), the spark of human consciousness recognizing and reaching out to the "other." It is the dawn of society.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 32 Heng (Duration) — Xian and Heng are inseparable. Xian is the sudden, magnetic spark of mutual attraction; Heng is the long-term, enduring commitment that follows. Influence begins the relationship; Duration sustains it.
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 32 Heng (Duration) — The inverse of Xian is Heng. Turning the mountain/lake upside down produces thunder/wind. The spontaneous joy of courtship (Xian) flips into the steady routines of marriage (Heng).
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 44 Gou (Coming to Meet) — The nuclear hexagram of Xian is Gou, which represents a sudden, powerful, and sometimes dangerous encounter. This reveals the hidden core of Xian: mutual influence involves a highly potent energetic exchange that must be handled with respect and propriety, lest it become a chaotic entanglement.
