Hexagram 31 Xian - Complete Guide Part 2: The Six Lines and the Stages of Influence

The six lines of Xian trace the physical and psychological progression of mutual influence, using the metaphor of the human body. The energy of attraction begins at the very bottom (the toes) and moves upward to the calves, thighs, heart, neck, and finally the jaws and tongue. This journey teaches us how to distinguish between fleeting, superficial impulses and profound, lasting resonance.

Line 1 — Six at the Bottom: The Influence in the Big Toe

The influence shows itself in the big toe.

The first line describes the very beginning of an attraction or intention. The big toe moves first before a step is taken, but it is barely noticeable. This represents a nascent, unconscious impulse. An idea has just sparked, or a person has just caught your attention. Because the movement is so slight and hasn't yet led to outward action, there is no judgment of good or bad attached to it. It is merely a fluttering of intent.

  • Stage: The initial, barely perceptible spark of attraction
  • Action: Acknowledge the impulse, but do not act on it yet; wait for deeper resonance
  • Wisdom: Neutral — early impulses must mature before they dictate action

Line 2 — Six in the Second Place: The Influence in the Calves

The influence shows itself in the calves of the legs. Misfortune. Tarrying brings good fortune.

The second line describes an energy that has moved up the leg to the calf muscle. The calf cannot move independently; it only moves when the whole body decides to walk. If the calf twitches and tries to force the person forward prematurely, it leads to awkward stumbling. This represents the eagerness to act too quickly on a new attraction or idea, driven by restless desire rather than true alignment. Misfortune comes from rushing. "Tarrying" (waiting quietly) brings good fortune, as it allows the rest of the body (and the mind) to catch up and act deliberately.

  • Stage: Restless, premature desire to move
  • Action: Suppress the urge to rush forward; wait for a clear, unified mandate
  • Wisdom: Good fortune through patience — do not let nervous energy dictate your path

Line 3 — Nine in the Third Place: The Influence in the Thighs

The influence shows itself in the thighs. Holds to that which follows it. To continue is humiliating.

The thighs follow the movements of the body blindly. If the influence has reached the thighs, it means a person is acting entirely on the basis of what others are doing or the immediate desires pulling them along ("holds to that which follows it"). They have no independent center of gravity. In a relationship or endeavor, chasing every fleeting whim or constantly mirroring the other person without your own agency leads to a loss of dignity. To continue this dependent, reactive behavior is humiliating.

  • Stage: Reactive influence; moving blindly based on the whims of others
  • Action: Stop chasing; establish your own inner center of gravity
  • Wisdom: Humiliation — blind obedience to external attraction strips you of agency

Line 4 — Nine in the Fourth Place: The Influence in the Heart

Perseverance brings good fortune. Remorse disappears. If a man is agitated in mind, and his thoughts go hither and thither, only those friends on whom he fixes his conscious thoughts will follow.

The fourth line is the structural center of the hexagram—the heart. Here, the influence moves from the physical/reactive level to the deep emotional and spiritual level. When the heart is steady and true (perseverance), it exerts a profound, magnetic resonance that naturally draws the right people and circumstances to it. Good fortune.

However, the line warns against anxiety. If the mind becomes agitated and tries to consciously force connections, the magic of natural resonance is broken. When you scheme and calculate, you only attract the few people you directly manipulate, not the vast, natural network that a quiet, sincere heart would draw.

  • Stage: Deep, authentic resonance of the heart
  • Action: Maintain inner peace and sincerity; do not overthink or manipulate
  • Wisdom: Good fortune — natural attraction is infinitely stronger than conscious scheming

Line 5 — Nine in the Fifth Place: The Influence in the Neck

The influence shows itself in the back of the neck. No remorse.

The fifth line represents the back of the neck, the most rigid and immobile part of the body metaphor. The neck supports the head but does not easily show emotion. This describes an influence that is deeply established, steady, and unshakeable, but perhaps lacking in outward, emotional display. It is the resolute, quiet influence of a leader or a mature partner. Because it is genuine and firm, there is no remorse, even if it lacks the dramatic, passionate sparks of earlier stages.

  • Stage: Firm, unyielding, mature influence
  • Action: Stand firm in your core principles; provide quiet stability for others
  • Wisdom: No remorse — genuine influence does not require constant emotional display

Line 6 — Six at the Top: The Influence in the Jaws and Tongue

The influence shows itself in the jaws, cheeks, and tongue.

The top line represents the mouth. The energy of influence has bypassed the heart and gone straight to the tongue. This describes superficial influence: smooth talking, flattery, empty promises, and persuasive rhetoric that has no grounding in inner truth. Like the toe in Line 1, it is a slight movement, but at the top, it is merely hot air. The I Ching does not explicitly say "misfortune," but the implication is clear: influence based purely on talk without the backing of the heart (Line 4) or the quiet stability of the mountain (the lower trigram) is ultimately meaningless and ephemeral.

  • Stage: Superficial influence; empty talk and flattery
  • Action: Beware of relying on or falling for smooth words without substance
  • Wisdom: Meaningless — true resonance comes from the heart, not the mouth

The Complete Journey: A Summary

  • Line 1: The Big Toe — A nascent, unconscious impulse; too early to act.
  • Line 2: The Calves — Restless, premature urge to move; waiting brings success.
  • Line 3: The Thighs — Blindly following whims or others; humiliating loss of agency.
  • Line 4: The Heart — Deep, magnetic resonance; good fortune if the mind stays calm.
  • Line 5: The Neck — Firm, quiet, mature stability; no remorse.
  • Line 6: The Tongue — Superficial flattery and empty talk; lacking substance.
