Hexagram 32 Heng - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Duration
Heng is the I Ching’s great hexagram of duration, constancy, and the endurance of genuine inner virtue through the inescapable reality of change. The character heng (恒) means constant, enduring, lasting — the image of the moon phases, the cyclical turning of the seasons, the heart that remains true while adapting to the shifting winds of circumstance. Heng is the natural and necessary complement of Xian (Influence, Hexagram 31): where Xian describes the sudden, magnetic spark of mutual attraction, Heng describes the profound, daily labor required to sustain that connection over a lifetime. It is the hexagram of marriage, of institution building, and of character that stands the test of time.
The Structure of Heng
Binary and Trigram
Heng is Hexagram 32 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 011100 — two yin lines at the bottom, three yang lines in the middle, and one yin line at the top. This structure is the exact inverse of Xian (001110). Where Xian has a hollow, receptive center, Heng’s center is packed with solid yang lines. The structural key of Heng is this solid, immovable core: the inner stability that allows a structure to endure external movement.
The Two Trigrams
-
Lower trigram: Xun (巽) — Wind, Wood, Gentleness, Penetrating
In the lower position, Xun represents the roots of a tree, or the wind that blows steadily. It is the oldest daughter — gentle, adaptable, but deeply penetrating. Xun represents the flexibility required to endure. Duration is not rigid stubbornness; it is the ability of roots to navigate around rocks to find water. -
Upper trigram: Zhen (震) — Thunder, Arousing, Movement
In the upper position, Zhen represents the oldest son — thunder, movement, and arousing energy. The thunder above provides the dynamic, active element of duration. Heng is not a static museum piece; it is thunder over wind, a highly energetic system.
The Image: Thunder and Wind
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “Thunder and wind: the image of Duration. Thus the superior man stands firm and does not change his direction.”
Thunder and wind are two of the most volatile forces in nature. How can they represent "Duration"? Because in the I Ching, true duration is not a state of suspended animation. It is dynamic equilibrium. The solar system endures precisely because the planets are in constant, tremendous motion. The superior person in Heng does not freeze in place; they adapt to the wind and the thunder, but their inner moral compass (their direction) never wavers.
The Judgment: Success Without Stagnation
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Duration. Success. No blame. Perseverance furthers. It furthers one to have somewhere to go.”
Heng’s judgment defines the nature of lasting success. It requires perseverance, but crucially, it adds: "It furthers one to have somewhere to go." True duration is not merely holding on to the past or preserving a relationship exactly as it was on the first day. Duration requires a future. A marriage endures because it has somewhere to go; an institution lasts because it adapts to its next mission. To stop moving is to stagnate, and stagnation is the enemy of Heng.
The Central Teaching: The Marriage of Movement and Stillness
The central teaching of Heng is the paradoxical relationship between change and constancy. The I Ching asserts that the only thing that endures in the universe is the law of change itself. Therefore, to endure, one must master the art of changing correctly.
If you try to hold a relationship, a business, or a spiritual practice in a rigid, unchanging grip, it will snap under the pressure of time. Heng is the art of the old tree: the trunk thickens and holds firm (constancy), while the leaves fall and renew themselves every season (change). The core values remain absolute; the methods of expression evolve endlessly.
The Natural Sequence: From Xian to Heng
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “The way of husband and wife must not be other than long-lasting. Hence after Xian comes Heng. Heng means long-lasting.”
The sequence from Xian (Influence) to Heng (Duration) is the foundational narrative of human society in the Lower Canon. Xian is the romance; Heng is the marriage. Xian is the sudden, brilliant inspiration for a company; Heng is the 20-year grind of building it. The I Ching teaches that influence without duration is a flash in the pan. The spark of Xian must be captured in the engine of Heng to do meaningful work in the world.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 31 Xian (Influence) — Xian and Heng are the ultimate pair of the Lower Canon. Initiation and continuation. The empty, receptive heart (Xian) and the solid, enduring core (Heng).
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 31 Xian — Turning Heng upside down produces Xian. The steady, enduring routines of the mature partnership (Heng) contain the inverse possibility of sudden, renewed romance (Xian).
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 43 Guai (Breakthrough / Resoluteness) — The nuclear hexagram of Heng is Guai. This reveals the hidden danger within duration. If "duration" becomes mere routine and suppression of truth, tension builds up until a sudden, radical breakthrough (Guai) destroys the structure. To endure safely, the system must allow for honest release.
