Hexagram 35 Jin - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Progress
Jin is one of the most auspicious and radiant hexagrams in the I Ching. It is the hexagram of the sunrise — the moment when the dark night ends and the light bursts forth, bringing clarity, warmth, and rapid advancement. The character jin (晋) means to advance, to progress, to rise, or to increase. In ancient times, it was used to describe a lord or official who is promoted and brought into the bright presence of the emperor. Jin represents a time of massive visibility, where your inner virtue and hard work are finally brought into the light and recognized by the world.
The Structure of Jin
Binary and Trigram
Jin is Hexagram 35 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 000101 — three yielding yin lines at the bottom, followed by a yang line, a yin line, and a yang line at the top. The structural key here is that the light (the yang energy) is situated firmly above the dark, heavy base. The light is not trapped below ( as in Ming Yi, Hexagram 36), nor is it fighting for survival. It has successfully broken free of the horizon and is ascending.
The Two Trigrams
-
Lower trigram: Kun (坤) — Earth, Receptivity, Yielding
In the lower position, Kun represents the vast, flat, receptive earth. It provides the dark, quiet background against which the light can shine. Kun represents docility and devotion; the people or the environment are completely receptive to the new light that is dawning. There is no resistance here. -
Upper trigram: Li (離) — Fire, Clarity, The Sun
In the upper position, Li represents the sun, fire, and illumination. The sun has risen above the earth. Its light is clear, penetrating, and impossible to ignore. The fire of Li provides the active, illuminating energy that drives the progress of the hexagram.
The Image: The Sun Rising Over the Earth
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “The sun rises over the earth: the image of Progress. Thus the superior man himself clears and makes bright his outstanding virtue.”
The image is breathtaking in its simplicity: sunrise. When the sun rises over the flat earth, it illuminates everything instantly. There are no mountains to block the light (unlike Hexagram 22, Bi). The superior person models this natural phenomenon internally. To achieve true progress, you do not manipulate others; you simply "clear and make bright" your own inherent virtue. When your character is spotless and brilliant, your progress in the world is as inevitable and natural as the sunrise.
The Judgment: The Prince is Honored
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Progress. The powerful prince is honored with horses in large numbers. In a single day he is granted audience three times.”
The judgment paints a picture of spectacular, almost overwhelming worldly success. A prince (representing someone of great capability and virtue) is recognized by the king. He is given magnificent gifts (horses, representing the ability to move forward quickly) and is called into the king's presence three times in a single day (an unprecedented level of access and favor).
This tells us that Jin is not a slow, grinding, incremental progress. It is a sudden, highly visible breakthrough where authority figures, the market, or the universe itself suddenly opens the doors and showers you with resources and recognition.
The Central Teaching: Visibility and Virtue
The central teaching of Jin is the relationship between inner purity and outer visibility. The sun does not "try" to make the earth bright; it simply shines, and the brightness happens as a consequence.
In a time of Jin, you are going to be seen. You will step onto the stage, your work will be published, your business will scale, or you will be promoted. The I Ching warns that when the light hits you, it exposes everything. Therefore, your only real job is to ensure that what the light reveals is "outstanding virtue." If you have hidden flaws, corrupt practices, or secret doubts, the sunrise will expose them. True progress requires absolute transparency.
The Natural Sequence: From Da Zhuang to Jin
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “Things cannot permanently be great and strong. Hence there follows the hexagram of Progress. Progress means advancing.”
The sequence from Da Zhuang (The Power of the Great, Hexagram 34) to Jin (Progress, Hexagram 35) is highly logical. Da Zhuang was the accumulation and management of raw, peak power. But power cannot just sit there vibrating indefinitely; it must eventually be deployed and move forward. Jin is the deployment of that power into the world. The charging ram of Da Zhuang becomes the galloping horses of Jin.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 36 Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light) — Jin and Ming Yi are one of the most famous pairs in the I Ching. They represent the ultimate duality of visibility. Jin is the sunrise (light above earth); Ming Yi is the sunset (light sinking into the earth). Progress and adversity.
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 36 Ming Yi — Turning Jin upside down literally plunges the sun under the earth.
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 39 Jian (Obstruction) — The nuclear hexagram of Jin is Jian (Water over Mountain). This reveals a profound secret: the core of rapid progress is overcoming past obstruction. The speed of the sunrise is propelled by the tension of the dark night that preceded it.
