Hexagram 38 Kui - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Opposition

Kui is the I Ching’s profound hexagram of alienation, misunderstanding, and fundamental divergence. The character kui (睽) means to look askance, to be in opposition, to be estranged, or to part ways. It represents a state where people, forces, or ideas are moving in completely opposite directions, unable to understand or connect with one another. However, Kui is not a hexagram of permanent hatred or destructive war (like Song, Hexagram 6). It is the hexagram of the paradox of difference: the profound philosophical realization that the universe requires extreme opposition to create life, and that even the most alienated forces ultimately share a common ground.

The Structure of Kui

Binary and Trigram

Kui is Hexagram 38 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 110101 — two yang lines at the bottom, a yin line, a yang line, a yin line, and a yang line at the top. The structural key of Kui is the relationship between the upper and lower trigrams, which are moving in diametrically opposite directions. It is the exact structural inverse of Jia Ren (The Family, Hexagram 37: 101011), where all lines worked together to create a unified, inward-focused harmony.

The Two Trigrams

  • Lower trigram: Dui (兌) — Lake, Joy, Openness
In the lower position, Dui represents the lake, water, and the youngest daughter. By its physical nature, water flows downward. It seeks the lowest point, resting in the basin of the earth.
  • Upper trigram: Li (離) — Fire, Clarity, The Clinging
In the upper position, Li represents fire, the sun, and the middle daughter. By its physical nature, fire flares upward. It seeks the sky.

The Image: Fire Above, Lake Below

The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “Above, fire; below, the lake: the image of Opposition. Thus amid all fellowship, the superior man retains his individuality.”

The image is one of absolute divergence. Fire flames upward; water seeps downward. The two elements are moving away from each other, never to meet. Furthermore, in the family of trigrams, they represent two sisters (the middle daughter and youngest daughter) living in the same house but whose wills do not accord—they are destined to marry into different families and part ways.

Yet, the superior person’s response to this opposition is not despair, but differentiation: "amid all fellowship, the superior man retains his individuality." The wisdom of Kui is the wisdom of maintaining your unique, distinct identity even when you are surrounded by people who do not understand you, or when you are forced to cooperate with people fundamentally different from you.

The Judgment: Success in Small Matters

The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Opposition. In small matters, good fortune.”

Kui’s judgment is realistic and constrained. When forces are moving in opposite directions, you cannot achieve "great matters" (like launching a major enterprise or building a lasting institution). Great matters require unified momentum. However, you can achieve "small matters." You can manage daily tasks, resolve minor disputes, and find temporary, tactical agreements even with those who oppose you. The secret to success in Kui is lowering your expectations for grand unity and focusing on pragmatic, small-scale cooperation.

The Central Teaching: Unity in Diversity

The central teaching of Kui is the most profound defense of diversity in classical Chinese philosophy. The Tuan Zhuan elaborates on the Judgment with a breathtaking cosmic perspective: “Heaven and earth are in opposition, but their work is carried out in unison. Men and women are in opposition, but they strive toward a common will. All beings are in opposition, but they belong to similar categories. Great indeed is the time of Opposition.”

The I Ching argues that opposition is not a flaw in the universe; it is the engine of creation. Without the tension between the highest heaven and the lowest earth, there is no space for life to exist. Without the biological and psychological opposition of male and female, there is no generation. The goal of Kui is not to force everyone to be identical (which leads to the stagnation of a cult), but to recognize the "common will" that underlies the most extreme differences.

The Natural Sequence: From Jia Ren to Kui

The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “When the way of the family comes to an end, misunderstanding arises. Hence there follows the hexagram of Opposition. Kui means misunderstanding.”

The sequence from Jia Ren (The Family, Hexagram 37) to Kui (Opposition, Hexagram 38) is a psychological inevitability. Jia Ren represents the tight, warm, structured harmony of the in-group. But any group that is too tightly bound eventually produces claustrophobia and alienation. Children grow up and must rebel against the family to find their own identity. Factions within a company develop differing visions. The perfect unity of Jia Ren naturally shatters into the individuated, opposing viewpoints of Kui.

Correspondences and Relationships

  • Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 37 Jia Ren (The Family) — Kui and Jia Ren are the ultimate pair representing the tension between the collective (Jia Ren) and the individual (Kui). Unity and Diversity.
  • Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 37 Jia Ren — Turning Kui upside down produces Jia Ren. The structure of complete alienation (Kui) inverted becomes the structure of complete cohesion (Jia Ren).
  • Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 63 Ji Ji (After Completion) — The nuclear hexagram of Kui is Ji Ji (Water over Fire). This is the most profound secret of Kui. While the outer hexagram is Fire moving away from Water (alienation), the inner nuclear hexagram is Water interacting perfectly with Fire (completion/harmony). The I Ching is saying that beneath the surface of complete opposition, perfect underlying harmony still exists.

The Way to Deepen Your Practice: 6 Grounded Anchors

When a practice feels restless or distracted, it is rarely a lack of discipline. More often, your nervous system is simply waiting for a physical cue that it is safe to arrive.

Insight remains abstract until it touches your physical world. Reflecting As Above, So Below, a sacred practice begins wherever you set an intentional boundary—draping a woven cloth where noise stops, attuning to an acoustic frequency, or taking up raw materials to forge an implement with your own hands.

You do not need an entire sanctuary built at once. A single deliberate anchor is enough to call you back home to yourself.
