Hexagram 42 Yi - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Increase
Yi is the I Ching’s great hexagram of expansion, generosity, and positive momentum. If Hexagram 41 Sun (Decrease) represents the deliberate pruning of the tree and the voluntary restraint of the ego, Hexagram 42 Yi (益) represents the explosion of spring growth that follows. The character yi means to increase, benefit, enrich, augment, or pour over (like a container overflowing). It is the image of wind and thunder mutually reinforcing each other: the storm stirs the atmosphere, and the wind carries the vitality of life across the land. Yi represents the golden rule of abundance: true increase is achieved by decreasing what is above to enrich what is below.
The Structure of Yi
Binary and Trigram
Yi is Hexagram 42 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 100011 — a solid yang line at the bottom, followed by three yielding yin lines, and capped by two solid yang lines at the top. This is the exact structural inverse of Sun (Decrease, Hexagram 41: 110001). Where Sun moved energy from below to above (voluntary sacrifice), Yi does the opposite: it represents "decreasing what is above to increase what is below" (损上益下). A strong yang line has been added to the base, providing immense foundational support to the whole structure.
The Two Trigrams
-
Lower trigram: Zhen (震) — Thunder, Movement, The Arousing
In the lower position, Zhen provides the powerful, energetic spark at the foundation. Thunder moves upward, breaking through inertia and initiating rapid, dynamic growth. The people, the foundation, or the base are aroused to enthusiastic action because they have been enriched. -
Upper trigram: Xun (巽) — Wind, Wood, Gentleness, Penetrating
In the upper position, Xun represents wind blowing softly and penetrating everywhere. Wind fans the power of thunder, while thunder stirs the wind into motion. They create a self-reinforcing, positive feedback loop. Growth occurs naturally, gently, and pervasively without violent disruption.
The Image: Wind and Thunder
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “Wind and thunder: the image of Increase. Thus the superior man: if he sees good, he imitates it; if he has faults, he rids himself of them.”
Wind and thunder stimulate and augment each other. The superior person applies this dynamic law directly to their character cultivation. When they see good in others, they immediately move toward it and adopt it ("imitates it"); when they discover a flaw in themselves, they eliminate it without hesitation ("rids himself of them"). The fastest way to "increase" your life is through immediate, friction-free moral and behavioral adaptation. Evolving toward virtue is the true engine of human growth.
The Judgment: The Ultimate Green Light
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Increase. It furthers one to undertake something. It furthers one to cross the great water.”
This is one of the most unconditionally positive and expansive judgments in the entire I Ching. "It furthers one to undertake something" signals that the time of waiting, hiding, or retreating is completely over. The tide is rising. "It furthers one to cross the great water" means that massive, high-risk, monumental ventures—crossing oceans, launching major businesses, making life-altering commitments—are strongly favored. You have the wind at your back and the thunder in your sails. Move.
The Central Teaching: Decreasing the Upper to Enrich the Lower
The central teaching of Yi is the economic and spiritual law of Sun Shang Yi Xia (损上益下). In traditional statecraft, a bad ruler taxes the starving peasants to build golden palaces (decreasing below to increase above). This creates revolution and collapse. A great ruler reduces taxes, cuts court luxuries, and enriches the farmers and workers (decreasing above to increase below).
When the foundation (the lower trigram) is wealthy, secure, and energized, the entire society rises naturally. In business, this means a CEO reinvesting profits into frontline employees and customer experience. In personal life, it means humbling your ego to serve the fundamental, physical, and emotional needs of your life. When you feed the roots, the tree flourishes effortlessly.
The Natural Sequence: From Sun to Yi
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “When decrease is carried to the end, increase is sure to follow. Hence there follows the hexagram of Increase.”
The sequence from Sun (Decrease) to Yi (Increase) is the natural rebound of the pendulum. You cannot decrease forever; eventually, the empty vessel must be filled. The voluntary discipline, budgeting, and pruning of Hexagram 41 cleared the garden of dead wood and accumulated immense potential energy. Now, in Hexagram 42, that stored energy bursts forth as tangible, massive increase. The fast is over; the feast has begun.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 41 Sun (Decrease) — Yi and Sun are an inseparable pair. Subtraction and Addition. Sun is pruning the vine; Yi is harvesting the grapes.
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 41 Sun — Inverting Yi turns the wind/thunder into mountain/lake (Sun). The two hexagrams are mirror images of energetic flow.
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 23 Bo (Splitting Apart / Stripping Away) — The nuclear core of Yi is Bo (Mountain over Earth). This is the profound warning hidden inside Increase: unchecked, greedy growth that strips the foundation will trigger Bo (collapse). Increase is only safe when it is benevolent; if it becomes purely extractive, it destroys itself.
