Hexagram 43 Guai - Complete Guide Part 2: The Six Lines and the Stages of Breakthrough

The six lines of Guai describe the psychological and strategic battlefield of the final breakthrough. The journey moves from premature overconfidence in the toes, through vigilant night-watches and walking through the rain alone, to the absolute necessity of tearing out weeds by the root, culminating in the silent, tragic extinction of the dark force. It is an extraordinary manual for decisive confrontation.

Line 1 — Nine at the Bottom: Mighty in the Forward-Striding Toes

Mighty in the forward-striding toes. When one goes and is not equal to the task, one makes a mistake.

The first line describes the classic blunder of premature confidence. The energy of the five yang lines has just begun to rise, and the person feels an overwhelming surge of strength in their "toes." Eager to make their mark, they charge forward independently to attack the corrupt system.

The I Ching warns that raw enthusiasm is not the same as strategic competence. If you attack the obstacle before your position is fully prepared, your alliances are secured, and your authority is established ("not equal to the task"), you will be crushed by the entrenched darkness. Running into a fight you cannot win is not brave; it is a mistake.

  • Stage: Premature, overconfident impulse to attack
  • Action: Restrain your restless feet; do not charge into battle unprepared
  • Wisdom: Mistake — fighting before you have the capacity guarantees failure

Line 2 — Nine in the Second Place: The Cry of Alarm at Midnight

A cry of alarm. Arms at evening and at night. Fear nothing.

The second line describes supreme strategic vigilance. The person of Line 2 is strong and central. They know that when evil is threatened, it strikes back in the dark—through sabotage, smear campaigns, or covert attacks. Therefore, they maintain a constant state of readiness ("arms at evening and at night"). They do not wait for the attack to happen; they post sentries and anticipate the counter-stroke. Because their preparedness is absolute, when the crisis comes, they have nothing to fear.

  • Stage: Active vigilance and anticipating the enemy's counter-attack
  • Action: Double your operational security; prepare for covert sabotage
  • Wisdom: Fear nothing — absolute preparedness turns nighttime danger into total safety

Line 3 — Nine in the Third Place: Walking Alone in the Rain

To be powerful in the cheekbones brings misfortune. The superior man is firmly resolved. He walks alone and is caught in the rain. He is spattered to the skin and people murmur against him. No blame.

The third line describes one of the most painful, heroic positions in the I Ching. The person here has a direct, ambiguous relationship with the dark force at the top (Line 3 corresponds to Line 6). If they show aggression openly in their face ("powerful in the cheekbones"), the dark force will be provoked and attack prematurely (misfortune).

Therefore, the superior person must go undercover. They associate with the corrupt elements just enough to neutralize them. Because of this, their own righteous allies misunderstand them, distrust them, and gossip against them ("people murmur against him"). They walk alone in the freezing rain, getting soaked and muddy. Yet, because their internal resolve never wavers, they successfully execute the mission. No blame.

  • Stage: Misunderstood by allies while neutralizing the enemy from within
  • Action: Endure isolation and gossip; stay true to your secret, noble mission
  • Wisdom: No blame — the courage to walk alone in the rain for the greater good

Line 4 — Nine in the Fourth Place: Restless Thighs and Tangled Flocks

There is no skin on his thighs, and walking comes hard. If a man were to let himself be led like a sheep, remorse would disappear. But if these words are heard, they will not be believed.

The fourth line describes a person who is restless, stubborn, and suffering from their own impatience. They want to lead the charge, but they have been wounded or lack the standing ("no skin on his thighs, walking comes hard"). They are hobbled, yet they refuse to follow others. If they would simply swallow their pride and let themselves be led by the wise leader of Line 5 ("like a sheep"), their anxiety and remorse would vanish. But because their ego is so inflamed, they will not listen to this advice. They will stubbornly push forward and suffer.

  • Stage: Ego-driven stubbornness refusing wise leadership
  • Action: Drop your pride; follow the qualified leader instead of trying to be the hero
  • Wisdom: Remorse disappears if you follow — stubborn individualism in a crisis is fatal

Line 5 — Nine in the Fifth Place: Tearing Up the Weeds by the Root

In dealing with weeds, firm resolution is necessary. Walking in the middle remains free of blame.

The fifth line is the ruler's position, responsible for executing the final breakthrough. The single dark line at the top is like resilient, invasive weeds (purslane/amaranth). If you just trim the leaves, weeds grow back stronger. You must tear them out by the root with absolute, unyielding firmness.

However, the line adds: "Walking in the middle remains free of blame." Even while being ruthlessly decisive against corruption, the ruler must not become fanatical, cruel, or vengeful. They do not burn down the whole field; they cleanly, surgically pull the weed from the center. Firmness tempered by balance brings freedom from blame.

  • Stage: The decisive, surgical eradication of the root problem
  • Action: Pull the problem out by the root; do not settle for cosmetic compromises
  • Wisdom: Free of blame — ruthless decisiveness must be guided by central balance

Line 6 — Six at the Top: The Cry with No Voice

No cry. In the end misfortune comes.

The top line represents the single dark, corrupt element that is about to be expelled by the five rising yang lines. The tragedy of Line 6 is total isolation. The dark force has exhausted all its tricks, burned all its bridges, and suppressed all truth. Now, when the flood of light arrives, it has no allies left to call upon. There is "no cry" because there is no one left who will listen. In the end, total misfortune and collapse come. Evil, having destroyed its own foundation, disappears into absolute silence.

  • Stage: The final, inevitable collapse of the corrupt force
  • Action: (If observing) Do not compromise; let the corrupt element fall into its natural end
  • Wisdom: Misfortune — corruption ultimately ends in complete, silent extinction

The Complete Journey: A Summary

  • Line 1: Power in the toes — premature charging into an unwinnable fight; a mistake.
  • Line 2: Arms at night — constant, quiet vigilance neutralizes covert danger; fear nothing.
  • Line 3: Walking alone in the rain — enduring misunderstanding and mud to do the secret duty; no blame.
  • Line 4: Restless thighs — stubborn ego refusing to follow; drop pride to save yourself.
  • Line 5: Tearing out weeds — surgical, root-level elimination of corruption tempered by the middle path.
  • Line 6: The silent end — the corrupt force is expelled into total, friendless oblivion.
