Gou is the I Ching’s great hexagram of sudden encounters, seductive temptation, and the subtle, invisible beginning of systemic decay. The character gou (姤) means to meet unexpectedly, to encounter, to couple, or to mate. In the King Wen sequence, it represents the Summer Solstice—the moment in the cosmic calendar when the light and heat of the sun reach their absolute maximum. Yet, at this exact moment of supreme brilliance, a single, dark yin line creeps in at the very bottom beneath five solid yang lines. Darkness has re-entered the world. Gou is not a hexagram of overt war; it is a masterclass in vigilance, warning us how empires, companies, and personal morals are eroded not by massive external attacks, but by tiny, unvetted compromises that sneak in from beneath.
The Structure of Gou
Binary and Trigram
Gou is Hexagram 44 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 011111 — a single yielding yin line at the bottom, followed by five solid yang lines above. This is the exact structural inverse of Guai (Breakthrough, Hexagram 43: 111110). Where Guai showed five yang lines about to expel the final yin line at the summit, Gou shows that the moment of total victory was an illusion: darkness has instantly re-spawned at the foundation. The single dark line is small, weak, and seemingly harmless, but it has the momentum of the entire seasonal cycle behind it.
The Two Trigrams

Lower trigram: Xun (巽) — Wind, Wood, Gentleness, Penetrating
In the lower position, Xun represents wind blowing softly and penetrating everywhere. It represents the nature of the first yin line: subtle, quiet, attractive, and invisible. It does not attack the five yang lines; it blows beneath them, slipping through their defenses like a draft under a locked door. -
Upper trigram: Qian (乾) — Heaven, Creative, Strength
In the upper position, Qian represents heaven, unyielding strength, and pure light. The five yang lines are massive and powerful, but because they are looking upward toward the heavens, they are completely blind to the tiny crack forming at their feet.
The Image: Wind Under Heaven
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “Under heaven, wind: the image of Coming to Meet. Thus does the prince act when disseminating his commands and proclaiming them to the four quarters of heaven.”
When wind blows under heaven, it touches everything across the vast landscape; no corner is left unreached. The superior person models this pervasive, gentle reach when broadcasting laws, corporate culture, or moral standards.
However, this image also reveals the double-edged sword of Gou: just as a benevolent command spreads everywhere on the wind, so too does a toxic rumor, a viral contagion, or a subtle moral corruption spread invisibly under heaven. The leader must use the wind of clear communication to counteract the dark wind of corruption before it takes root.
The Judgment: The Dangerous Maiden
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Coming to Meet. The maiden is powerful. One should not marry such a maiden.”
To understand this judgment, we must strip away modern cultural sensitivities and look directly at the archetypal symbolism. In ancient I Ching cosmology, the "maiden" (the single yin line at the bottom) represents a sudden, attractive, but fundamentally untrustworthy force that enters a system uninvited. She has just boldly stepped into a court of five men (the yang lines).
Why does the I Ching warn: "One should not marry such a maiden"? Because "marriage" in the I Ching represents an enduring, permanent, institutional commitment (as seen in Hexagram 32, Heng). You may encounter this powerful force accidentally (Gou is an encounter, not a planned meeting), and you may have to manage it tactically, but you must never make a permanent commitment to it. Do not tie your destiny to an unvetted, impulsive, or corrupting influence. If you marry it, it will eventually hollow out your house.
The Central Teaching: Fang Wei Du Jian (防微杜渐) - Checking Decay at Its Inception
The core philosophy of Gou is the ancient principle of Fang Wei Du Jian: "prevent the minute from developing into the massive; block the trickle before it becomes a flood."
A skyscraper does not collapse from a massive earthquake overnight; it collapses because a tiny termite colony or hairline rust fissure was ignored for decades. A corporate scandal does not begin with billion-dollar fraud; it begins with an employee fudging a $20 expense receipt. Gou warns that the single yin line at the bottom will eventually grow into the two lines of Dun (Retreat), the three lines of Pi (Standstill), and the five lines of Bo (Collapse). The only time to stop catastrophic decay is on Day One, when the first compromise appears.
The Natural Sequence: From Guai to Gou
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “When a breakthrough occurs, things are sure to meet. Hence there follows the hexagram of Coming to Meet. Gou means meeting.”
The sequence from Guai (Breakthrough, Hexagram 43) to Gou (Coming to Meet, Hexagram 44) is the I Ching’s ultimate lesson in cosmic humility. In Guai, you fought the epic battle, purged the corrupt elements, and celebrated total victory. But the universe abhors a vacuum. The moment the old darkness is cleared away, new, unexpected entities rush into the open space. You have broken through; now you must deal with who you meet on the other side. Vigilance can never sleep.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 43 Guai (Breakthrough) — Guai and Gou are the turning points of the solar calendar. Guai is the third month (late spring, light expelling dark); Gou is the fifth month (summer solstice, dark returning under light).
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 43 Guai — Turning Gou upside down produces Guai. The structural mirror illustrates how the beginning of decay (Gou) eventually leads to the necessity of a violent purge (Guai).
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 1 Qian (The Creative) — The nuclear core of Gou (lines 2, 3, 4, 5) is pure Qian. This reveals that the core of the situation is still predominantly noble, strong, and divine. The danger has not yet infected the heart; it is only at the perimeter.
