Hexagram 45 Cui - Complete Guide Part 4: Philosophy — Congregation in Confucian, Taoist, and Social Thought

Cui grapples with the core problem of political philosophy and sociology: What holds a human society together? Why do sovereign individuals choose to surrender part of their autonomy to form a collective? The Confucian, Taoist, and classical Chinese political traditions read Cui as a profound meditation on the sacred nature of community, the necessity of unifying leadership, and the inevitable tension between high-density aggregation and civil defense.

The Confucian Reading: The Sacred Axis of the Ancestral Temple

Wang Jia You Miao (王假有庙): The Temple as the Center of Gravity

The Judgment opens with a cornerstone of Confucian political theology: “The king approaches his temple.”

In ancient China, the ancestral temple (Zong Miao) was not merely a place of private prayer; it was the institutional, cultural, and spiritual anchor of the entire state. When the people gathered at the temple, they were reminded of their shared ancestry, their common history, and their moral duty to Heaven.

Confucian philosophy argues that humans cannot be permanently united by purely economic contracts or legal coercion (Legalism). Contracts are broken when interests diverge, and coercion provokes rebellion. True social cohesion requires reverence. The ancestral temple creates a shared, sacred reality that transcends individual self-interest. When the leader humbles themselves before the ancestors and Heaven, the common people naturally feel a deep, emotional sense of belonging. Sacred ritual (Li) is the invisible glue of civilization.

Li Jian Da Ren (利见大人): The Necessity of the Moral Axis

The text repeatedly insists that "it furthers one to see the great man." In Confucian sociology, a crowd is not inherently good. Without moral leadership, a gathering of people quickly degenerates into a chaotic, irrational mob.

The "great man" (the solid yang lines at the center) serves as the ethical spine of the community. They embody the virtues of Ren (benevolence) and Yi (righteousness) so visibly that the disparate, confused desires of the masses (the yin lines of Kun) naturally crystallize around them. The great man is the magnetic pole that turns chaotic iron shavings into an orderly magnetic field.

The Taoist Reading: The Natural Gravity of the Lake

The Effortless Gathering of Waters

While Confucianism emphasizes the conscious construction of the temple and the moral authority of the leader, Taoism observes the natural physics of the hexagram: Lake over Earth.

The Tao Te Ching (Chapter 66) famously explains how great leaders gather people: “Why is the sea king of a hundred streams? Because it lies below them. Therefore it is the king of a hundred streams. If the sage would be above the people, he must speak as if he were below them. If he would lead them, he must follow behind them.”

In Cui, the earth (Kun) lies below, quietly and humbly receiving the waters that flow down from the mountains to form the lake (Dui). The Taoist reading of Cui emphasizes that true community cannot be forced. People do not gather because they are commanded to; they gather because the leader creates a natural depression—a space of profound humility, safety, and nourishment—where people naturally want to pool their energy. Social gravity operates by lowering oneself.

Political Philosophy: The Paradox of Defense (Chu Rong Qi, Jie Bu Yu)

Renews His Weapons Against the Unforeseen

The Xiang Zhuan provides a stark, realistic warning that prevents Cui from degenerating into naive utopianism: “Thus the superior man renews his weapons in order to provide against the unforeseen.”

This is a foundational concept in classical Chinese realism. Whenever resources, wealth, and human beings mass together in high density (Cui), two inevitable systemic problems arise:

  1. Internal Entropy: Crowds generate collective madness, emotional contagion, and social friction. A small misunderstanding in an isolated village is easily managed; in a crowded city of 100,000, it can trigger a devastating riot.
  2. External Predation: A dense concentration of wealth (the temple full of great offerings, the granaries full of grain) immediately attracts external predators, bandits, and rival empires.

Therefore, the philosophy of Cui asserts that peace requires deterrence. The superior person does not prepare weapons because they love war; they prepare weapons to ensure that the sacred celebration inside the temple can proceed without interruption. A civilization that gathers wealth without gathering the means to defend it is simply preparing a banquet for invaders.

Cui and the Philosophy of Invariant Constants

Cui (Gathering Together, Hexagram 45) and Sheng (Pushing Upward, Hexagram 46) form the invariant constant of Mass and Momentum, Horizontal and Vertical Expansion.

Cui is the horizontal pooling of mass: water gathering on the flat earth. It is the consolidation of people, capital, and emotional investment. But mass without movement becomes stagnant, like a swamp.

Sheng is the vertical ascent: the tree pushing up through the soil toward the sky. Sheng takes the horizontal mass accumulated in Cui and uses it as the biological fuel for vertical, upward growth.

The sage understands this cosmic relationship: you cannot climb high (Sheng) if you have not first gathered your team and resources at basecamp (Cui). And you cannot continue gathering resources forever without eventually using them to push upward. Gathering is the mandatory prelude to elevation.
