Hexagram 5 Xu - Complete Guide Part 2: The Six Lines and the Stages of Waiting
Xu's six lines tell the complete story of the waiting period - from the distant, comfortable waiting of the beginning through increasingly dangerous proximity to the obstacle, to the surprising resolution at the end. Each line describes a different stage of the wait and a different quality of patience required.
Line 1 - Nine at the Bottom: Waiting in the Meadow
Waiting in the meadow. It furthers one to abide in what endures. No blame.
The first stage: still far from the danger, waiting in the open meadow. The obstacle is distant; there is no immediate pressure. The counsel to abide in what endures is the counsel to ground oneself in the permanent - the inner values and commitments that will sustain the waiting through all its stages. No blame: there is nothing wrong with being at the beginning of the waiting period. Use this comfortable time to build the inner foundation that will be needed later.
When this line appears: You are at the beginning of a waiting period. Ground yourself in your core values. They will sustain you through the more difficult stages ahead.
Line 2 - Nine in the Second Place: Waiting on the Sand
Waiting on the sand. There is some gossip. The end brings good fortune.
The second stage: closer to the water, on the shifting sand at the water's edge. The proximity to the danger brings gossip - the chatter of observers. The sand is more precarious than the meadow, but the position is still safe. Ignore the gossip. Maintain the wait. The end brings good fortune.
When this line appears: You are closer to the goal but also closer to the danger. Others are watching and commenting. Ignore the gossip. The end brings good fortune.
Line 3 - Nine in the Third Place: Waiting in the Mud
Waiting in the mud brings about the arrival of the enemy.
The third stage: the person has moved too close too soon and is now stuck in the mud - the zone between safe sand and dangerous water. The arrival of the enemy is the consequence of impatience. The counsel is implicit but clear: do not move forward before the right moment. The mud is the consequence of not being willing to wait in the more comfortable positions.
When this line appears: You have moved too close to the danger too soon. Do not move further forward. Wait for the situation to stabilize before proceeding.
Line 4 - Six in the Fourth Place: Waiting in Blood
Waiting in blood. Get out of the pit.
The fourth stage: the person is now in the water itself - in the dangerous zone of Kan. The blood signals genuine danger; the pit is the abyss from which escape seems impossible. The counsel is stark and urgent: get out of the pit. This is not the time for patient waiting; it is the time for immediate action to escape the dangerous situation. There are moments when the right action is not waiting but immediate escape.
When this line appears: You are in genuine danger. Get out of the dangerous situation as quickly as possible. Escape first; resume the wait from a safer position.
Line 5 - Nine in the Fifth Place: Waiting with Wine and Food
Waiting at meat and drink. Perseverance brings good fortune.
The fifth stage: the ruler's position - nourished, comfortable, confident. This is the ideal waiting position. The person has the inner strength (yang in the ruler's position) and the outer nourishment to sustain the wait indefinitely. This is the direct expression of the hexagram's Image: the superior person who eats and drinks, is joyous and of good cheer. The ideal waiting is active nourishment, not passive endurance. Perseverance brings good fortune.
When this line appears: You are in the ideal waiting position. Nourish yourself. Maintain your inner strength. Be joyous and of good cheer. The right moment will come - and when it does, you will be fully prepared.
Line 6 - Six at the Top: The Unexpected Guests
One falls into the pit. Three uninvited guests arrive. Honor them, and in the end there will be good fortune.
The final stage: the person falls into the pit at the very end of the waiting period - and then three uninvited guests arrive. The guests are unexpected, uninvited, potentially threatening. But the counsel is to honor them. The profound wisdom of Line 6: the end of the waiting period is not always what was expected. The rain that finally falls may not be the rain that was anticipated. The resolution may come from an unexpected direction, through unexpected agents, in an unexpected form. The person who can honor the unexpected guests - who receives the unforeseen resolution with openness and gratitude - finds that in the end there is good fortune.
When this line appears: The waiting period is ending - but not in the way you expected. Unexpected helpers or opportunities are arriving. Honor them. Do not refuse them because they were not part of your plan. In the end there will be good fortune.
