Hexagram 5 Xu - Complete Guide Part 3: Divination Guide and How to Read Xu in Practice

Xu is one of the most practically important hexagrams in the I Ching - because the question it addresses (when to act and when to wait) is one of the most fundamental questions in any human situation. Part 3 is the practical handbook for working with Xu in actual readings.

What Questions Xu Answers Best

  • Timing: Is now the right time to act? Should I wait or move forward? How long should I wait?
  • Preparation: Am I ready for this undertaking? What do I need to do to prepare? How do I use this waiting period productively?
  • Blocked progress: Why is nothing moving? What is blocking my forward movement? How do I navigate this period of stagnation?
  • Nourishment: How do I sustain myself during this difficult period? What do I need to maintain my strength and resilience?
  • Opportunity: When will the right opportunity come? How will I recognize it? Am I in danger of missing it?
  • Unexpected developments: How do I respond to this unexpected turn of events? Should I welcome or resist this unforeseen development?

What Xu Is NOT Saying

  • Xu does not mean give up. It means wait with sincerity and perseverance - the goal is still valid, the timing is not yet right.
  • Xu does not mean do nothing. It means nourish yourself actively during the waiting period - eat and drink, be joyous and of good cheer.
  • Xu does not mean the wait will be endless. The clouds will eventually release their rain; the right moment will eventually come.
  • Xu does not mean be passive. The waiting of Xu is calculated, active, nourishing - not passive resignation.

Interpreting Xu Without Moving Lines

Pure Xu (no moving lines) speaks clearly: this is a waiting period. The most important question is not when the wait will end but how you are using the waiting time. Three counsels apply in full: maintain sincerity (genuine confidence that the right moment will come); nourish yourself actively (eat and drink, be joyous and of good cheer); and persevere (do not give up on the goal during the waiting period).

Ask yourself honestly: Am I waiting in the meadow (Line 1 - comfortable, grounded, building inner resources)? On the sand (Line 2 - closer to the goal, maintaining the wait despite discomfort)? Or in the wine and food position (Line 5 - nourished, confident, joyous)? These are the safe positions. If you are in the mud (Line 3) or the blood (Line 4), the counsel changes: stop pushing forward, or get out immediately.

Interpreting Xu With Moving Lines

One moving line: The focal point. Apply the specific line's counsel directly. The transformed hexagram shows where the waiting is heading.

Two or three moving lines: Read all, weight the lower line slightly more. The transformed hexagram becomes increasingly important.

Four or five moving lines: Focus primarily on the transformed hexagram. The waiting situation is in significant flux.

Six moving lines: Extremely rare. The transformed hexagram (Hexagram 6, Conflict) is the primary message: the waiting has broken down entirely and conflict has emerged. Return to sincerity and find a way to restore the waiting before the conflict escalates.

Xu's Six Transformation Hexagrams

  • Line 1 moves (yang→yin): Hexagram 48 (Jing, The Well) - the grounded waiting of the meadow transforms into becoming a source of nourishment for others. The person who has grounded themselves in what endures becomes the well that others draw from.
  • Line 2 moves (yang→yin): Hexagram 63 (Ji Ji, After Completion) - the patient waiting on the sand, maintained through the gossip, leads to completion. The end does indeed bring good fortune.
  • Line 3 moves (yang→yin): Hexagram 60 (Jie, Limitation) - the mud of impatience transforms into the wisdom of limitation. The person who has learned the hard lesson of Line 3 develops the capacity to set appropriate limits on their forward movement.
  • Line 4 moves (yin→yang): Hexagram 43 (Guai, Breakthrough) - escape from the pit leads to breakthrough. The person who gets out of the dangerous situation finds that the way forward is now clear.
  • Line 5 moves (yang→yin): Hexagram 11 (Tai, Peace) - the ideal nourishing wait leads to peace and harmony. The person who has maintained the wine and food position finds that the right moment arrives as a state of natural peace.
  • Line 6 moves (yin→yang): Hexagram 46 (Sheng, Pushing Upward) - honoring the unexpected guests leads to upward movement and advancement. The person who receives the unforeseen resolution with openness finds that it propels them forward.

A Practical 5-Step Reading Framework

Step 1: Identify the Wait. What are you waiting for? What is the goal that the waiting is serving? Xu always points to a waiting period in service of a goal - identify both clearly.

Step 2: Locate Your Position. Which line best describes your current position in the waiting period? Meadow (comfortable, distant)? Sand (closer, some discomfort)? Mud (too close, vulnerable)? Blood (in danger)? Wine and food (nourished, ideal)? Or unexpected guests (surprising resolution)?

Step 3: Assess Your Sincerity. Are you waiting with genuine sincerity - authentic confidence that the right moment will come and genuine commitment to the goal? Or are you procrastinating (secretly hoping the goal will go away) or passively resigned (secretly believing the right moment will never come)?

Step 4: Check Your Nourishment. Are you actively nourishing yourself during the waiting period? Are you eating and drinking, being joyous and of good cheer? Or are you fasting and fretting, depleting the very resources you will need when the right moment comes?

Step 5: Read the Direction. What hexagram does Xu transform into? The Well (become a source of nourishment), After Completion (the end brings good fortune), Limitation (learn appropriate limits), Breakthrough (escape leads to forward movement), Peace (nourishing wait leads to harmony), or Pushing Upward (honor the unexpected and advance)?

Sample Readings

Scenario 1: Xu with Line 5 Moving

Question: I have been waiting for the right opportunity to launch my business for two years. Am I waiting correctly?

Xu transforms to Hexagram 11 (Peace). Yes - you are in the ideal waiting position. The transformation to Peace is the confirmation: the nourishing wait of Line 5 leads to the natural harmony of Tai. Continue nourishing yourself and your preparation. The right moment will arrive as a state of natural readiness - not as a dramatic signal but as a quiet sense that the time is now. Be alert for that moment.

Scenario 2: Xu with Line 3 Moving

Question: I have been pushing hard to make this deal happen and it keeps falling apart. What should I do?

Xu transforms to Hexagram 60 (Limitation). You are in the mud of Line 3: you have moved too close too soon and the enemy (the resistance, the obstacles) has arrived. The transformation to Limitation is the counsel: stop pushing. Set appropriate limits on your forward movement. Pull back to the sand or the meadow. Allow the situation to stabilize. The deal may still happen - but not through force. Wait for the right moment to re-approach.

Scenario 3: Xu with Line 6 Moving

Question: Something completely unexpected has happened that changes everything I was waiting for. How should I respond?

Xu transforms to Hexagram 46 (Pushing Upward). This is the unexpected guests of Line 6. Honor them. The unexpected development is not a disaster - it is the unforeseen resolution of the waiting period, arriving from an unexpected direction. The transformation to Pushing Upward is the confirmation: if you receive this unexpected development with openness and gratitude rather than resistance, it will propel you forward. Do not refuse the unexpected guests because they were not part of your plan.

Common Misinterpretations of Xu

  • Treating Xu as permission to procrastinate: Xu is not permission to avoid action indefinitely. It is counsel to wait for the right moment - which will come. The person who uses Xu as an excuse to avoid all action has misunderstood the hexagram.
  • Ignoring the nourishment counsel: The most commonly ignored counsel in Xu is eat and drink, be joyous and of good cheer. People in waiting periods often fast and fret. Xu is explicit: nourish yourself actively. The waiting period is not a time of deprivation but a time of preparation.
  • Missing the danger of Lines 3 and 4: Xu is not uniformly a counsel to wait. Lines 3 and 4 are warnings against impatience and its consequences. The person who is in the mud or the blood needs to stop or escape - not continue waiting.
  • Refusing the unexpected guests: The most profound misinterpretation of Xu is refusing the unexpected resolution of Line 6 because it was not part of the plan. The rain that finally falls may not be the rain that was anticipated. Receive it with openness.
