It is a profound guide to mastering human pleasure.
Line 1 β Nine at the Bottom: Harmonious, Contented Joy
Harmonious joy. Good fortune.
The first line represents the purest, most uncomplicated form of joy. The person is a strong, solid yang line at the very base of the lower lake. They have no selfish desires, no manipulative schemes, and no need to impress anyone. Their joy is "harmonious" (He Dui εε )βit flows from within, born of simple gratitude, inner peace, and self-containment.
They do not rely on alcohol, dopamine spikes, or external applause to feel happy; they are content simply being alive. Because this joy is completely free of greed or ulterior motives, it creates zero friction with the world. Good fortune. To find peace in simple existence is the highest foundation of Dui.

They are in a relationship or business partnership with someone of questionable character (the yielding yin line in Line 3). The temptation is to join them in petty gossip, cheap pleasures, or cutting ethical corners to "fit in."
However, the person of Line 2 chooses "sincere joy" (Fu Dui εε ). They refuse to compromise their moral core. They associate with others in good faith, but maintain their ethical boundaries. Because their joy is anchored in inner truth (Fu), the vulgar crowd cannot corrupt them. Any initial social awkwardness or anxiety vanishes: "Remorse disappears." Good fortune.

This is the person who cannot stand being alone in a quiet room for ten minutes. They compulsively scroll social media, binge junk food, chase superficial parties, and surround themselves with flattering sycophants to drown out their internal void. The I Ching delivers a blunt, unyielding verdict: "Misfortune." You cannot fill an internal spiritual hole with external sensory junk. Chasing distraction only deepens the emptiness and leads to ruin.

Deliberating joy is not at peace. After banishing the flaw, there is joy.
The fourth line sits at the boundary of the upper trigram, caught in an intense psychological tug-of-war. Below them is the seductive, cheap pleasure of Line 3; above them is the noble, high-minded purpose of the ruler in Line 5. The person is "deliberating" (Shang Dui εε )βweighing the options, bargaining with their conscience, and debating whether to indulge in a guilty pleasure or choose the higher path.
Because of this internal conflict, "he is not at peace." Bargaining with temptation creates constant mental friction. The I Ching advises: make the clean cut! "Banish the flaw" (Jie Ji δ»ηΎ)βrenounce the low-vibration temptation completely. The moment you stop negotiating with your vices and choose the noble path, true, unshakeable joy returns.

But they have placed their trust and affection in a charming, seductive, but fundamentally corrupt favorite (the yin line at the top, Line 6). The corrupt element is in the process of "cleaving away" (Bo ε₯βrotting, decaying, and falling away).
The I Ching warns the leader: "Danger." You cannot rehabilitate someone whose core is committed to vanity and decay. If you continue to give your sincere trust to a toxic partner, a deceitful friend, or an unreformable employee, their corruption will drag your entire administration down. You must cut your emotional attachment to that which is rotting.

The person has zero internal substance (no yang core); they are pure mask, pure charisma, and pure vanity. They live to captivate, charm, and manipulate others for attention, power, or money.
Notice that the line offers no verdict (no "good fortune," no "misfortune"). Why? Because the outcome depends entirely on whether the person wakes up. If you are captivated by your own reflection and spend your life performing for applause, you are a hollow puppet. But if you realize the vanity of the mask, you can step down from the stage and find the true, quiet waters of Line 1. The choice is yours.
