Hexagram 61 Zhong Fu - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Inner Truth
Zhong Fu is universally revered as one of the most spiritually radiant, sacred, and profound hexagrams in the entire I Ching. The character zhong (中) means the center, the inner heart, or balanced alignment; fu (孚) depicts a bird's claw resting gently over its chick, meaning sincere trust, faith, brooding, hatching life, or absolute fidelity. Together, Zhong Fu (中孚) translates as Inner Truth or Central Sincerity. It represents the supreme spiritual reality of the universe: that true power does not reside in weapons, money, or clever arguments, but in the unshakeable resonance of a completely honest heart. When a human being empties themselves of deceit, prejudice, and ego, their inner truth becomes so radiant and magnetic that it touches and transforms even the most stubborn, insensitive, and unreachable creatures in existence. Zhong Fu is the alchemy of radical trust.
The Structure of Zhong Fu
Binary and Trigram
Zhong Fu is Hexagram 61 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 110011 — two solid yang lines at the bottom (lines 1, 2), two yielding yin lines in the middle (lines 3, 4), and two solid yang lines at the top (lines 5, 6). The structural key of Zhong Fu is its perfect, breathtaking symmetry: it is an inversion-invariant hexagram (turning it upside down produces the exact same structure: 110011). It is an open heart protected by an unbreakable shell.
The Architecture of the Sacred Egg
Zhong Fu is a literal visual diagram of an Egg (Luan 卵) or a brooding bird:
- Lines 1 & 2 (Yang): The solid, firm shell beneath, providing warmth and physical foundation.
- Lines 3 & 4 (Yin): The hollow, receptive, empty center (Zhong Xu 中虚)—the yolk, the embryo, the space where life gestates.
- Lines 5 & 6 (Yang): The solid, protective shell above, shielding the life within.
Why must the center be empty (yin)? Because a heart that is crammed full of dogmas, selfish desires, and cynical calculations is solid stone; nothing new can hatch inside it, and truth cannot enter. Only when the heart is "hollow" (humble, open, and free of prejudice) can the divine warmth of truth hatch life. The mother bird sits on the egg, warming the empty center with quiet fidelity until the chick breaks through.
The Two Trigrams

Lower trigram: Dui (兌) — Lake, Joy, Openness, The Mouth
In the lower position, Dui represents joy, receptive listening, and the open mouth that speaks truth with warmth and sincerity. Joy makes truth approachable. -
Upper trigram: Xun (巽) — Wind, Wood, Gentle Penetration
In the upper position, Xun represents the gentle wind blowing across the water. Wind penetrates the surface of the lake without disturbing its depth. Wood floats on the lake, forming a ship.
The Image: Wind Over the Lake
The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “Wind over the lake: the image of Inner Truth. Thus the superior man discusses criminal cases in order to delay executions.”
When wind blows over a lake, it creates visible ripples across every square inch of the water's surface. Water has no secrets from the wind; wind touches every drop. The superior person models this total, empathetic transparency in human justice: Yi Yu Huan Si (议狱缓死) — "discusses criminal cases in order to delay executions."
In ancient law, the ultimate test of moral integrity was the death penalty. A corrupt, lazy judge rushes to execute prisoners to close the docket. A judge who possesses Inner Truth sits with the prisoner's file, enters with deep empathy into the criminal's mind, and searches with agonizing care for any mitigating circumstance, any doubt, or any spark of redeemable humanity to delay or commute the sentence. Inner truth always chooses mercy over cold bureaucratic efficiency.
The Judgment: Touching Pigs and Fishes (Tun Yu Ji)
The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Inner Truth. Pigs and fishes. Good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water. Perseverance furthers.”
The Judgment contains one of the most astonishing phrases in world literature: “Pigs and fishes. Good fortune (Tun Yu Ji 豚鱼吉).”
In ancient China, pigs and fishes were considered the least intelligent, most stubborn, and most insensitive creatures on earth. A pig is greedy and obstinate; a fish is deaf, cold-blooded, and hides in the deep mud. You cannot reason with a fish, and you cannot preach philosophy to a pig. They represent the people in your life who are the most cynical, hostile, emotionally closed-off, and impossible to influence.
Yet, the I Ching makes an unbelievable claim: When your inner truth (Fu) reaches absolute, crystalline purity, even the "pigs and fishes" are moved! True sincerity does not use intellectual arguments; it radiates a silent, non-verbal resonance that disarms the most hardened cynic. When your heart is 100% clean, the wildest animals sense your lack of malice, and good fortune follows.
Crossing the Great Water (Li She Da Chuan)
The Judgment commands: “It furthers one to cross the great water.” Wood (Xun) resting above Lake (Dui) is the image of a wooden ship sailing peacefully across a vast body of water.
In life, taking on monumental risks, embarking on life-altering ventures, and entering dangerous negotiations ("crossing the great water") usually fail because of mutual distrust. When partners suspect each other of hidden motives, the ship sinks in the first storm. But when an enterprise is bound together by the unshakeable, transparent sincerity of Zhong Fu, the ship is unsinkable. Absolute trust allows human beings to sail across the most terrifying oceans of history.
The Natural Sequence: From Jie to Zhong Fu
The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “When limitations are respected, people trust. Hence there follows the hexagram of Inner Truth. Fu means trust.”
The sequence from Jie (Limitation, Hexagram 60) to Zhong Fu (Inner Truth, Hexagram 61) reveals the origin of trust. In Jie, we established boundaries, budgets, rules, and "number and measure." When a leader or a partner proves that they respect boundaries—that they honor their budget, keep their word, and do not overstep their limits—people realize they are trustworthy. Trust is not a vague feeling; trust is the mathematical byproduct of respected boundaries. Limitation builds the container; Inner Truth fills it with life.
Correspondences and Relationships
- Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 62 Xiao Guo (Preponderance of the Small) — Zhong Fu and Xiao Guo form a magnificent symmetrical pair. Zhong Fu is hollow in the middle and solid on the outside (110011 — two yin lines inside four yang lines). Xiao Guo is solid in the middle and hollow on the outside (001100 — two yang lines inside four yin lines). Inner Truth and Conscientious Detail.
- Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 61 Zhong Fu — Turning Zhong Fu upside down produces itself! It is an eternally invariant, self-mirroring cosmic structure. Truth is the same from above and below.
- Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 27 Yi (Nourishment) — The nuclear core of Zhong Fu (lines 2, 3, 4, 5) is Yi (Mountain over Thunder, the open jaws). This reveals the profound truth of the hexagram: the ultimate purpose of inner truth is spiritual nourishment. Sincerity is the bread of life. When we live in truth, our souls are nourished by the divine.
