Hexagram 8 Bi - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Holding Together

Shi is the organized army - the disciplined collective force commanded by a strong man; Bi is the voluntary community - the people who come together around a central figure through genuine attraction rather than organized command. Where Shi organizes through discipline and authority, Bi unites through genuine belonging and mutual recognition. Where Shi's general is embedded in the army (Line 2), Bi's central figure is at the ruler's position (Line 5) - not commanding from within but attracting from the center. Shi and Bi are the two faces of collective organization: the army and the community, discipline and belonging, command and attraction.

This is Part 1 of a 6-part complete guide to Hexagram 8 Bi. Here we decode the symbol itself: its structure, its names, its correspondences, and the deep logic encoded in water above earth.

The Six Lines: Reading the Symbol

Hexagram 8 Bi is composed of:

  • Line 6 (Top) - Yin (broken)
  • Line 5 - Yang (solid)
  • Line 4 - Yin (broken)
  • Line 3 - Yin (broken)
  • Line 2 - Yin (broken)
  • Line 1 (Bottom) - Yin (broken)

Binary encoding: 010000 - five yin lines surrounding a single yang line at Line 5. Like Shi (000010), Bi has only one yang line - but where Shi's yang is at Line 2 (the general embedded in the army), Bi's yang is at Line 5 (the ruler at the center of the community). This structural difference encodes the fundamental difference between the two hexagrams: Shi organizes from within; Bi attracts from the center.

The Two Trigrams

  • Lower Trigram: Kun (Earth/Receptive) - three broken yin lines (000). Earth, the receptive, the vast containing field. Below is the earth: open, receptive, ready to receive and nourish whatever comes to it.
  • Upper Trigram: Kan (Water/Danger) - yin-yang-yin (010). Water, the flowing, the gathering. Above is the water: flowing naturally downward, gathering in the lowest places, finding its level.

Water above Earth below: the water flows naturally over the earth, gathering in the lowest places, finding its natural level. This is the structural image of Bi: not the organized deployment of force (Shi) but the natural gathering of what belongs together. The streams flow naturally toward the sea; the people flow naturally toward the central figure who has the genuine strength and genuine virtue to hold them together.

The Single Yang Line at Line 5

Bi has only one yang line - Line 5, in the ruler's position. This single yang line is the central figure: the person of genuine strength and genuine virtue around whom the community naturally gathers. Unlike Shi's general (who is embedded in the army at Line 2), Bi's central figure is at the center of the community (Line 5) - not commanding from within but attracting from the center, like the sea that attracts all the streams without commanding them.

The position of the yang line at Line 5 (the ruler's position, the position of genuine authority) rather than Line 2 (the general's position, the position of embedded leadership) encodes the fundamental difference between Shi and Bi: Shi's leadership is active and embedded; Bi's leadership is central and attractive. The central figure of Bi does not go out to organize the community; the community comes to the central figure through genuine attraction.

The Names of Bi

The Primary Name: Bi

The character Bi means to be close to, to be near, to be intimate with - the relationship of genuine proximity and genuine belonging. Bi is not merely physical closeness but the closeness of genuine mutual recognition: the experience of being genuinely seen, genuinely valued, and genuinely belonging to a community that is genuinely one's own. The character Bi also carries the meaning of to compare, to match, to be like - the recognition of genuine similarity and genuine compatibility that is the foundation of genuine community.

The character Bi also appears in the compound bǐ lín (neighboring, adjacent) - the closeness of neighbors who share a common space and a common life. This neighborly closeness is the social foundation of Bi: not the formal organization of Shi but the organic community of people who genuinely belong together, who share a common space, a common life, and a common recognition of their mutual belonging.

Holding Together (Wilhelm/Baynes Translation)

Richard Wilhelm rendered Bi as Holding Together - capturing the essential quality of the hexagram: not the active organization of Shi but the mutual holding that arises when people who genuinely belong together recognize their belonging and commit to maintaining it. The holding together of Bi is not the discipline of the army but the loyalty of genuine community: the commitment to remain together, to support each other, and to maintain the bonds of genuine belonging through the difficulties that inevitably arise.

Union and Belonging

In the classical Chinese commentary tradition, Bi is associated with the natural gathering of what belongs together - the streams that flow naturally toward the sea, the people who naturally gather around a person of genuine virtue. This natural gathering is the key feature of Bi: it is not organized or commanded but arises spontaneously from the genuine attraction of what belongs together. The community of Bi is not built; it grows - like water finding its natural level.

The Judgment

Bi. Good fortune. Inquire of the oracle once again whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; then there is no blame. Those who are uncertain gradually come. Whoever comes too late meets with misfortune.

The Judgment of Bi is one of the most personally searching in the I Ching - it turns the question back on the person who receives it: do you have what it takes to be the central figure around whom others can genuinely gather? Three conditions define the central figure of Bi:

  • Sublimity (Yuan): The first of the four cardinal virtues of the I Ching (yuan, heng, li, zhen). Sublimity is the quality of genuine greatness - not the greatness of power or achievement but the greatness of genuine virtue, genuine wisdom, and genuine care for others. The central figure of Bi must have genuine sublimity: the quality that makes others naturally want to gather around them.
  • Constancy (Heng): The second cardinal virtue. Constancy is the quality of genuine reliability - the commitment to remain the same genuine person through all circumstances, to maintain the genuine virtue and genuine care that attracted the community in the first place. The central figure of Bi who changes - who becomes less virtuous, less caring, less genuine as the community grows - will lose the community's trust and the community will dissolve.
  • Perseverance (Zhen): The third element of the Judgment's counsel. Perseverance is the quality of sustained commitment - the willingness to maintain the genuine virtue, genuine care, and genuine constancy through the long term, not just in the initial moment of gathering. The community of Bi is not built in a day; it requires the sustained perseverance of the central figure through all the difficulties that arise.

Those who are uncertain gradually come: the community of Bi does not form all at once. Some people recognize the central figure's genuine virtue immediately and come quickly; others are uncertain and come gradually, as they observe the central figure's genuine constancy over time. The central figure of Bi must be patient with those who come gradually - their gradual coming is not a sign of rejection but of careful discernment.

Whoever comes too late meets with misfortune: the community of Bi has a moment of formation - a time when the gathering is happening and the bonds of genuine belonging are being established. The person who hesitates too long - who waits until the community is fully formed before committing - finds that the bonds have already been established without them, and they cannot enter the community on the same terms as those who came at the right time.

The Image

On the earth is water: the image of Holding Together. Thus the kings of antiquity bestowed the different states as fiefs and cultivated friendly relations with the feudal lords.

The Image of Bi is one of the most politically significant in the I Ching. Water on the earth - flowing naturally over the surface, gathering in the lowest places, finding its natural level - is the image of the community's relationship to the central figure: the community flows naturally toward the central figure of genuine virtue, just as water flows naturally toward the lowest place.

The kings of antiquity who bestowed the different states as fiefs and cultivated friendly relations with the feudal lords were practicing Bi's wisdom: not the centralized command of Shi but the distributed community of Bi, in which the central figure (the king) maintains genuine relationships with the various parts of the community (the feudal lords) through genuine mutual recognition and genuine mutual benefit. The feudal system of Bi is not a hierarchy of command but a network of genuine belonging: each feudal lord belongs genuinely to the king, and the king belongs genuinely to each feudal lord.

Why Bi Follows Shi

The Xugua commentary explains: Shi means masses of people. Masses of people necessarily have something they hold together; therefore Shi is followed by Bi. Bi means holding together.

This is a precise philosophical statement: the organized collective force of Shi (the army) naturally transforms into the voluntary community of Bi (the holding together) when the campaign is concluded. The army that has achieved its objectives together - that has shared the conditions of the campaign, that has developed genuine bonds of mutual trust and genuine mutual recognition - naturally becomes the community of Bi. The campaign of Shi creates the conditions for the community of Bi.

Bi is also the structural inverse of Shi (Bi is Shi turned upside down), confirming the pairing: the organized army (Shi) and the voluntary community (Bi) are the two faces of collective organization. The army becomes the community; the community can become the army. The strong man of Shi becomes the central figure of Bi; the general becomes the king.

The Opposite and Inverse Hexagram

Opposite Hexagram: Hexagram 14 (Da You, Great Possession)

Bi's binary opposite (101111) is Hexagram 14, Great Possession - the hexagram of the person who has achieved great abundance through genuine virtue and genuine wisdom. The opposite of voluntary community (Bi) is great individual possession (Da You): where Bi is the gathering of many around a central figure, Da You is the abundance that flows to the individual who has the genuine virtue to attract and hold it. Together they define the complete range of genuine attraction: the community that gathers around genuine virtue (Bi) and the abundance that flows to genuine virtue (Da You).

Inverse Hexagram: Hexagram 7 (Shi, The Army)

When Bi is turned upside down, it becomes Hexagram 7 (Shi) - confirming the structural pairing. Bi and Shi are the same collective organization viewed from different angles: the organized army (Shi) and the voluntary community (Bi) are two expressions of the same fundamental human capacity for collective action. The wisdom of Shi is the foundation of Bi; the community of Bi is the fulfillment of Shi.
