Hexagram 8 Bi - Complete Guide Part 2: The Six Lines and the Stages of Holding Together

Bi's six lines tell the complete story of voluntary community - from the sincere initial approach that establishes the foundation of genuine belonging, through the inner and outer dimensions of genuine community, to the supreme good fortune of the central figure, and finally to the tragic image of the person who comes too late. Each line reveals a different stage of the holding together and a different quality of genuine belonging required.

Line 1 - Six at the Bottom: Sincere Initial Approach

Hold to him in truth and loyalty; this is without blame. Truth, like a full earthen bowl: thus in the end good fortune comes from without.

The very beginning of the gathering. The counsel is foundational: approach with genuine sincerity - not strategic, not calculating, but genuinely authentic. The truth like a full earthen bowl is the image of this sincerity: not the elaborate vessel of formal ceremony but the simple, full, genuine offering of authentic presence. The good fortune flows naturally from genuine sincerity, just as water flows naturally toward the lowest place - the community recognizes genuine sincerity and responds with genuine welcome.

  • Stage: The initial approach - first genuine contact with the community
  • Action: Approach with genuine sincerity; offer authentic presence without calculation
  • Danger: Approaching with calculation rather than genuine sincerity
  • Wisdom: Genuine sincerity is the foundation of genuine belonging

When this line appears: You are at the beginning of a significant relationship or community. Approach with genuine sincerity. The good fortune comes from without - from the community's genuine recognition of your authentic presence.

Line 2 - Six in the Second Place: Inner Belonging

Hold to him inwardly. Perseverance brings good fortune.

The inner dimension of genuine belonging. The genuine belonging of Bi is not merely external (attending gatherings, performing rituals) but internal - a genuine inner commitment to the central figure that flows from genuine recognition of genuine virtue. The person who holds to the central figure inwardly - who has genuinely recognized the genuine virtue and committed from within - is the person whose belonging is genuine and lasting. Perseverance through the misunderstandings, conflicts, and disappointments of any genuine community deepens and strengthens the belonging over time.

  • Stage: The inner commitment - deepening belonging through genuine inner recognition
  • Action: Hold to the central figure inwardly; maintain genuine inner commitment through all difficulties
  • Danger: External participation without inner commitment - superficial belonging that cannot sustain genuine community
  • Wisdom: Genuine belonging requires genuine inner commitment; perseverance deepens the belonging

When this line appears: The belonging requires genuine inner commitment, not merely external participation. Hold inwardly. Persevere through difficulties.

Line 3 - Six in the Third Place: Wrong Community

You hold together with the wrong people.

The most cautionary line of Bi. The wrong community is not necessarily a bad community; it is simply the wrong community for this person - the community that cannot provide genuine belonging because genuine recognition of genuine compatibility is absent. Line 3 is in the lower trigram (Earth) but not in genuine correspondence with Line 5 (the central figure). The person is attached to what is immediately available rather than to what is genuinely right. The counsel is implicit but clear: recognize the wrong community and find the right one. Remaining out of convenience, habit, or fear cannot produce genuine belonging.

  • Stage: The wrong community - attachment to what is immediately available rather than genuinely right
  • Action: Recognize the wrong community; find the right one
  • Danger: Remaining in the wrong community out of convenience or fear
  • Wisdom: Genuine belonging requires genuine compatibility; the wrong community cannot provide it

When this line appears: You are in the wrong community. Recognize this honestly. The genuine belonging you seek cannot be found here.

Line 4 - Six in the Fourth Place: Outer Belonging

Hold to him outwardly also. Perseverance brings good fortune.

The outer dimension of genuine belonging - the complement of Line 2. Together Lines 2 and 4 define the complete belonging of Bi: inner commitment (Line 2) expressed through outer loyalty (Line 4). The community cannot recognize genuine inner commitment if it is not expressed through visible outer loyalty. Line 4 is in the upper trigram (Water/Kan) and in genuine correspondence with the central figure at Line 5 - the outer belonging is the visible expression of genuine recognition of genuine virtue.

  • Stage: The outer expression - expressing genuine inner commitment through visible loyalty and support
  • Action: Hold to the central figure outwardly; express genuine inner commitment through visible loyalty
  • Danger: Inner commitment without outer expression - incomplete belonging the community cannot recognize
  • Wisdom: Genuine belonging requires both inner commitment and outer expression

When this line appears: Your genuine inner commitment needs to be expressed outwardly. Hold to the central figure visibly. Express your recognition through visible loyalty and support.

Line 5 - Nine in the Fifth Place: The Central Figure's Supreme Good Fortune

Manifestation of holding together. In the hunt, the king uses beaters on three sides only and foregoes game that runs off in front. The citizens need no warning. Good fortune.

The central position: the only yang line in Bi - the central figure of genuine sublimity, constancy, and perseverance around whom the community naturally gathers. The hunt with beaters on three sides only is one of the most beautiful images in the I Ching: the king leaves one side open, allowing the game that does not want to be caught to escape freely. The citizens need no warning - the community gathers freely, without coercion, without compulsion. This is Bi's most profound wisdom: the community held together by coercion is not genuine community but captivity. The community that gathers freely around genuine virtue is the community of Bi - and it is the most genuine and most durable community possible.

  • Stage: The central figure - the person of genuine virtue around whom the community naturally gathers
  • Action: Maintain genuine sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; leave one side open - allow those who do not genuinely belong to leave freely
  • Danger: Trying to hold the community together through coercion rather than genuine attraction
  • Wisdom: The community that gathers freely around genuine virtue is the most genuine and most durable

When this line appears: You are in the central figure's position. Maintain genuine sublimity, constancy, and perseverance. Leave one side open. The community that gathers freely around your genuine virtue is the community that will endure.

Line 6 - Six at the Top: The Headless Man Who Comes Too Late

He finds no head for holding together. Misfortune.

The person who comes too late - who hesitated too long, waited until the community was fully formed before committing, and now finds no head for holding together. The community has established its bonds of genuine belonging without this person. The headless man is the image of the person who has lost the opportunity for genuine belonging: without a head (without the central figure to hold together with), the person is incomplete and directionless. The misfortune is not punishment but the natural consequence of coming too late to the moment of genuine community formation.

  • Stage: Too late - the community has formed without this person
  • Action: Recognize the misfortune honestly; do not try to force entry into a community that has already formed
  • Danger: Trying to force entry into a community whose bonds of genuine belonging are already established
  • Wisdom: The moment of genuine community formation is real and finite; hesitation too long loses the opportunity

When this line appears: You have come too late - or are in danger of coming too late. The moment of genuine community formation is passing. Commit now, or find another community where the moment has not yet passed.

The Complete Journey: A Summary

  • Line 1: Sincere initial approach - truth like a full earthen bowl; good fortune comes from without
  • Line 2: Inner belonging - hold to him inwardly; perseverance brings good fortune
  • Line 3: Wrong community - you hold together with the wrong people
  • Line 4: Outer belonging - hold to him outwardly also; perseverance brings good fortune
  • Line 5: The central figure - hunt with beaters on three sides; citizens need no warning; good fortune
  • Line 6: Too late - he finds no head for holding together; misfortune

The consistent theme throughout: the quality of genuine belonging - sincerity, inner commitment, outer expression, and genuine recognition of genuine virtue that together constitute the genuine community of Bi.
