How to Prepare Your Space for a Combined Tarot and Crystal Reading

Space preparation is not a formality before the real practice begins. It is the beginning of the practice — the first ritual act that signals to the body, the mind, and whatever else you believe is listening that something intentional and sacred is about to happen.
The quality of a reading is significantly shaped by the quality of the space it is conducted in. Not because good tarot requires perfect physical conditions, but because the process of preparing the space is itself a process of preparing the self — of transitioning from ordinary time into the receptive, attentive state that good reading requires.
The Three Dimensions of Space Preparation
Dimension One: Physical Space
Physical space preparation serves two functions: practical and symbolic. Practically, a clear, dedicated space reduces distraction and signals that this is a different kind of activity than ordinary tasks. Symbolically, the act of preparing the space is an act of making room — clearing the clutter of ordinary life to create space for something deeper.
The physical space for a combined tarot and crystal reading needs:
- A clear surface — clean enough to lay the spread without confusion
- Enough room for the specific number of card positions in your chosen spread
- A place to hold or set the crystal (or crystals) where they are physically present in the reading space
- Enough light to see the cards clearly — natural light is ideal; candlelight works beautifully for evening readings and adds the element of Fire to any reading
Additional elements are optional but add to the ritual quality of the space: a cloth to lay the cards on, incense or smoke for energetic clearing, a candle, flowers or plants, or any other objects that carry meaning and help signal the transition into reading space.
Dimension Two: Energetic Space
Energetic space preparation is the act of clearing and setting the energetic quality of the reading environment. This may be simple or elaborate depending on your practice, but it should be conscious.
Simple energetic preparation includes: opening a window briefly to change the air, lighting a candle with the intention that it illuminates the reading, taking several slow, deliberate breaths to shift your own state from ordinary awareness to reading awareness, or speaking a brief intention aloud ("I open this space to honest and helpful insight").
The crystal plays a specific role in energetic preparation: before the reading begins, hold the selected crystal in both hands. Feel its weight and temperature. Breathe into it. This simple act of physical connection with the crystal activates the somatic channel that distinguishes combined readings from pure card readings — it brings the body into the practice from the very beginning.
Dimension Three: Inner Space
Inner space preparation is the most important dimension and the most frequently skipped. It is the act of preparing your own inner state for reading: moving from the busy, scattered state of ordinary life into the receptive, attentive, honest state from which genuine insight is available.

- A brief period of stillness — even thirty seconds of simply sitting without doing anything is enough to initiate the transition
- A clear formulation of the question or intention for the reading, stated internally or written down before the cards are drawn
- An honest check of your inner state: am I approaching this reading genuinely open to what it shows me, or am I hoping it confirms a conclusion I have already reached?
This last check is particularly important. Reading with a predetermined desired outcome significantly degrades the quality of the reading — not because the cards become inaccurate, but because interpretation is unconsciously filtered through the desired conclusion. Noticing this tendency before the reading begins allows you to consciously set it aside, or at least to note it as a factor in how you will interpret what comes up.
How Long Should Preparation Take?
The preparation for most readings in this guide takes between three and ten minutes. The preparation ritual for each spread is specifically designed to be thorough enough to be effective and brief enough to be practical. You do not need to spend an hour preparing for a reading. You do need to spend at least a few minutes — enough to genuinely shift state before the first card is drawn.
The combination of physical tidying, crystal holding, and brief stillness and intention-setting is sufficient for most readings. The more significant the reading — the deeper the question, the more consequential the decision being examined — the more time it is worth spending in preparation.
