How to Read Your Progressed Chart: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Share
Secondary progressions are one of astrology's most powerful and personally meaningful forecasting tools - but for many people, the progressed chart feels intimidating at first. Where do you start? What do you look at first? How do you make sense of what you find? This guide answers all of those questions, walking you through the process of reading your progressed chart step by step, starting with the most important placements and building toward a complete, integrated picture of your current progressed chart.
Step 1: Calculate Your Progressed Chart
The first step is to calculate your progressed chart. You will need your birth date, birth time, and birth location - the same information required for your natal chart. Most free online astrology tools and apps can calculate your progressed chart automatically. Simply search for "secondary progressions calculator" or look for the progressions option in your preferred astrology software.
When calculating your progressed chart, make sure you are using secondary progressions (also called "day for a year" progressions) rather than solar arc directions or primary directions, which are different forecasting techniques. Secondary progressions are the most widely used and the most personally meaningful for most people.
The result will be a chart that looks similar to your natal chart but with the planets in slightly different positions - positions that reflect where the planets were in the sky a number of days after your birth equal to your current age in years.
Step 2: Find Your Progressed Moon Sign and House
The progressed Moon is the first and most important placement to examine in your progressed chart. It moves faster than any other progressed planet - approximately one degree per month - and its current sign and house placement reveals the emotional chapter you are currently living through.
Find the Moon symbol in your progressed chart and note its sign and house. Then ask yourself: how does this placement describe my current emotional life? What do I most need right now? Where is my emotional energy most focused? The sign describes the quality of the current emotional season; the house describes the arena of life where that emotional energy is most concentrated.
If you are new to progressions, this single placement alone - the progressed Moon's current sign and house - will give you more immediately relevant and personally meaningful information than almost anything else in the progressed chart.
Step 3: Find Your Progressed Sun Sign and House
The progressed Sun moves approximately one degree per year and changes signs approximately every 30 years. Find the Sun symbol in your progressed chart and note its sign and house. If your progressed Sun is in the same sign as your natal Sun, you are in the first chapter of that sign's expression. If it has moved into a new sign, you are in a period of significant identity evolution.
Ask yourself: how does this progressed Sun placement describe the current chapter of my identity and life purpose? What qualities is this sign asking me to develop and express? What arena of life is this house asking me to focus my core energy and attention on?
If your progressed Sun has recently changed signs - within the last five years or so - pay particular attention to this placement. A progressed Sun sign change is one of the most significant events in the progressed chart, and its influence on your sense of self and life direction can be profound.
Step 4: Check for Progressed Planets Changing Signs
Beyond the Sun and Moon, check whether any other progressed planets have recently changed signs or are about to change signs. Progressed Mercury, Venus, and Mars all move perceptibly over a lifetime, and their sign changes can be significant - particularly for the areas of life they govern (mind and communication for Mercury, love and values for Venus, drive and desire for Mars).
A progressed planet that has changed signs within the last three years, or will change signs within the next three years, is in a period of significant transition - and its influence on the corresponding area of your life is likely to be particularly noticeable during this period.
Step 5: Look for Progressed Planets Aspecting Natal Planets
The most specific and personally relevant timing information in the progressed chart comes from aspects between progressed planets and natal planets - particularly conjunctions, which are the most powerful progressed aspects. A progressed planet conjuncting a natal planet activates that natal planet's energy in a new way, often corresponding to significant developments in the area of life the natal planet governs.
To find these aspects, compare the degree positions of your progressed planets with the degree positions of your natal planets. Any progressed planet within approximately two degrees of a natal planet is forming a significant aspect. The closer the aspect, the more strongly it is being felt. An exact conjunction - a progressed planet at the same degree as a natal planet - is at the peak of its influence.
The most significant progressed aspects to look for are progressed Sun conjunct natal planets (particularly the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn), progressed Moon conjunct natal planets (particularly the Sun, Venus, and the Ascendant), and progressed Venus or Mars conjunct natal planets.
Step 6: Note the Progressed Ascendant
The progressed Ascendant shifts gradually through the signs over a lifetime, reflecting the evolution of the person's outer presentation and engagement with the world. Find the Ascendant degree in your progressed chart and note its sign. If it has moved into a new sign from your natal Ascendant, you may notice a shift in how you present yourself to the world and how others perceive you.
Step 7: Integrate the Picture
Once you have identified the key placements - the progressed Moon's sign and house, the progressed Sun's sign and house, any recent or upcoming sign changes, and any significant aspects between progressed and natal planets - the final step is to integrate these elements into a coherent picture of your current progressed chart.
Ask yourself: what is the overall theme of my current progressed chart? What is the soul working on right now? What new dimensions of myself are emerging? What is being released or completed? The answers to these questions, drawn from the specific placements you have identified, give you a genuinely meaningful picture of the current chapter of your inner evolution.

A Note on Verification
One of the most powerful ways to develop confidence in your progressed chart is to verify it against your own lived experience. Look back at significant periods of your life - major turning points, important relationships, significant career changes, periods of deep inner transformation - and find the corresponding progressed chart for those periods. Notice how the progressed placements at those times reflect the inner experience of those chapters. This retrospective verification is one of the most convincing demonstrations of the progressed chart's genuine relevance to the arc of a human life.
