Hygiea in Astrology: The Asteroid of Health, Prevention & Wholeness
Share
What Is Hygiea in Astrology?
Hygiea (asteroid 10) is the fourth-largest asteroid in the belt and one of the most significant health-related placements in the natal chart. Named after the Greek goddess of health and hygiene — daughter of Asclepius, the god of medicine — Hygiea governs preventive health, holistic wellbeing, the body-mind-spirit connection, purification, and the maintenance of health through conscious daily practices.
Hygiea is distinct from Chiron (which governs the wound and healing gifts) and the 6th house (daily health routines). Hygiea operates at a more holistic level — she is concerned with the philosophy of health, what genuine wellbeing means, and the specific practices that support it. Health is not the absence of disease but the presence of genuine vitality and wholeness.
The Mythology of Hygiea
In Greek mythology, Hygiea was the goddess of health, cleanliness, and sanitation. While her father Asclepius treated disease, Hygiea was associated with its prevention through proper hygiene, diet, and lifestyle. The word "hygiene" derives directly from her name. She was worshipped at healing sanctuaries called Asclepieia, where the sick received medical treatment, ritual purification, and lifestyle guidance. Her archetype: health as an active conscious practice, the wisdom of prevention over cure, and the integration of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of wellbeing.

When Hygiea and Chiron are in close aspect, the relationship between wounding and healing is particularly significant. This person may be called to work in the healing arts, embodying both the wounded healer (Chiron) and the health cultivator (Hygiea) archetypes.
