I Ching Consultation as Iterative Modeling

BY NICOLE LAU
Traditional I Ching practice: Ask a question once, receive one hexagram, interpret, done. But this approach misses the I Ching's deepest powerβits ability to function as an iterative modeling system, where multiple consultations over time reveal the system's evolution, test for convergence, and refine predictions.
In Dynamic Divination Modeling Theory, we consult the I Ching not once but multiple timesβtracking hexagram sequences, analyzing changing line patterns, measuring convergence, and using each consultation to refine our model of the system. This is the I Ching as iterative algorithm, not static oracle.
This article teaches you how to use the I Ching as an iterative modeling tool, revealing patterns that single consultations cannot see.
Why Iterate? The Power of Multiple Consultations
Single Consultation Limitations
One I Ching reading gives you:
β’ Current state (primary hexagram)
β’ Transition direction (changing lines)
β’ Future state (transformed hexagram)
But it cannot tell you:
β’ Is this pattern stable or fluctuating?
β’ Are we converging toward a fixed point or oscillating?
β’ How confident should we be in this prediction?
β’ Has the system changed since last consultation?
Iterative Consultation Advantages
Multiple consultations over time reveal:
β’ Convergence: Repeated hexagrams = stable pattern, high confidence
β’ Divergence: Different hexagrams each time = high uncertainty, bifurcation point
β’ Trajectory: Hexagram sequence shows system evolution path
β’ Validation: Predictions from earlier consultations can be checked against later ones
β’ Refinement: Each consultation adds data, improving model accuracy
The Iterative I Ching Method
Step 1: Initial Consultation (tβ)
Ask your question using traditional method (coins or yarrow stalks).
Record:
β’ Date/time
β’ Question (exact wording)
β’ Primary hexagram
β’ Changing lines
β’ Transformed hexagram
β’ Your interpretation
Example (Week 1):
Question: "What is the trajectory of my business launch?"
Primary: Hexagram 3 (Difficulty at Beginning) δ·
Changing lines: Line 1, Line 4
Transformed: Hexagram 17 (Following) δ·
Interpretation: Initial difficulty (Hex 3) transitioning toward finding right path (Hex 17). Timeline: 2-4 months.
Step 2: Second Consultation (tβ)
Wait 1-4 weeks, then consult again with the same question.
Critical: Use identical wording. You're testing the system's state at a different time.
Record: Same data as Step 1
Example (Week 4):
Question: "What is the trajectory of my business launch?" (same)
Primary: Hexagram 3 (Difficulty at Beginning) δ·
Changing lines: Line 1
Transformed: Hexagram 24 (Return) δ·
Interpretation: Still in difficulty (Hex 3 repeats!), but transformation path changedβnow moving toward Return/renewal (Hex 24) instead of Following (Hex 17).
Step 3: Convergence Analysis
Compare consultations tβ and tβ:
Primary hexagram convergence:
β’ Same hexagram? β Strong convergence, stable state
β’ Different hexagram? β Divergence, system is changing
In example: Hex 3 appears in both β Convergence on "difficulty at beginning" = robust pattern
Transformed hexagram convergence:
β’ Same transformation? β Stable trajectory
β’ Different transformation? β Trajectory is shifting
In example: Hex 17 vs. Hex 24 β Divergence on future state = uncertainty about where difficulty leads
Changing lines convergence:
β’ Same lines changing? β Specific variables are consistently active
β’ Different lines? β Different variables becoming active
In example: Line 1 appears in both β Convergence on foundation issue = this variable is persistently important
Step 4: Third Consultation (tβ)
Wait another 1-4 weeks, consult again.
Example (Week 8):
Question: "What is the trajectory of my business launch?" (same)
Primary: Hexagram 8 (Holding Together) δ·
Changing lines: Line 5
Transformed: Hexagram 20 (Contemplation) δ·
Interpretation: System has shifted! No longer in difficulty (Hex 3). Now in unity/gathering phase (Hex 8), moving toward contemplation/vision (Hex 20).
Step 5: Sequence Analysis
Now you have a hexagram sequence: 3 β 3 β 8
Trajectory interpretation:
β’ Weeks 1-4: Stuck in difficulty (Hex 3 stable)
β’ Week 8: Breakthrough to unity (Hex 8)
β’ This is a state transitionβsystem moved from one attractor (difficulty) to another (unity)
Transformed sequence: 17 β 24 β 20
All three transformed hexagrams are different β High uncertainty about long-term outcome, but all involve reflection/vision/return themes β Partial convergence on introspective/strategic phase ahead
Step 6: Convergence Scoring
Quantify convergence strength across consultations:
Primary hexagram convergence:
β’ 3 out of 3 same = 100% convergence
β’ 2 out of 3 same = 67% convergence
β’ 1 out of 3 same = 33% convergence
β’ 0 out of 3 same = 0% convergence
In example: 2 out of 3 (Hex 3 twice) = 67% convergence = moderate confidence in "difficulty" phase
Overall system convergence:
Average of primary, transformed, and changing line convergence
In example:
β’ Primary: 67% (Hex 3 twice)
β’ Transformed: 0% (all different)
β’ Changing lines: 67% (Line 1 twice)
β’ Average: 45% = weak-to-moderate convergence = system is evolving, not stable
Interpreting Convergence Patterns
High Convergence (80-100%)
Pattern: Same hexagram appears in 4+ out of 5 consultations
Meaning: System is in a stable attractor. This state is robustβit's not changing quickly. High confidence in this pattern.
Action: Accept this as the current reality. If it's a desired state, maintain it. If undesired, recognize you need significant intervention to shift out of this attractor.
Example: Hexagram 12 (Standstill) appears 5 times in a row β You're stuck in stagnation attractor. This won't change without major intervention.
Moderate Convergence (50-80%)
Pattern: Same hexagram appears 2-3 times out of 5, with variations
Meaning: System has a dominant pattern but is also evolving. Moderate confidenceβthe core theme is real, but details are shifting.
Action: Focus on the convergent elements (what repeats) as robust patterns. Treat divergent elements as areas of uncertainty or active change.
Example: Hexagram 3 appears 3 times, Hexagram 8 once, Hexagram 24 once β Core pattern is "difficulty/beginning phase" but system is transitioning.
Low Convergence (20-50%)
Pattern: Different hexagrams each time, with occasional repeats
Meaning: System is in fluxβhigh uncertainty, possibly at a bifurcation point. Low confidence in any single prediction.
Action: Recognize this as a period of high variability. Don't make major decisions based on any single reading. Wait for convergence to increase, or accept that you're in a genuinely uncertain phase where your choices matter more than prediction.
Example: 5 consultations, 5 different hexagrams β System is chaotic or you're at a critical choice point. Prediction is unreliable.
Divergence (0-20%)
Pattern: Completely different hexagrams every time, no repeats
Meaning: Either the system is in chaos, you're asking the wrong question, or you're in a free will domain where the future is genuinely open.
Action: Stop consulting. Either reframe your question, wait for the situation to stabilize, or accept that this is not predictableβyour choices will create the outcome, not external forces.
Changing Line Sequence Analysis
The pattern of changing lines across consultations reveals which variables are active:
Consistent Changing Lines
Pattern: Same line(s) change in multiple consultations
Meaning: This variable is persistently activeβit's a key leverage point or ongoing issue.
Example:
Consultation 1: Line 1 changing
Consultation 2: Line 1 changing
Consultation 3: Line 1 changing
Interpretation: Line 1 (foundation) is the critical variable. Whatever Line 1 represents in your situation (foundational issue, starting point, root cause) is where the action is.
Shifting Changing Lines
Pattern: Different lines change each time
Meaning: Multiple variables are active, or the active variable is shifting over time.
Example:
Consultation 1: Line 1 changing (foundation issue)
Consultation 2: Line 3 changing (transition issue)
Consultation 3: Line 5 changing (leadership issue)
Interpretation: System is evolving through stagesβfirst foundation, then transition, then leadership. This is a developmental sequence.
Increasing Changing Lines
Pattern: Number of changing lines increases over time
Meaning: System is becoming more unstableβmore variables are in flux, transformation is accelerating.
Example:
Consultation 1: 1 changing line
Consultation 2: 2 changing lines
Consultation 3: 4 changing lines
Interpretation: System is destabilizing, moving toward major transformation or crisis.
Decreasing Changing Lines
Pattern: Number of changing lines decreases over time
Meaning: System is stabilizingβfewer variables in flux, settling into an attractor.
Example:
Consultation 1: 4 changing lines
Consultation 2: 2 changing lines
Consultation 3: 0 changing lines
Interpretation: System is settling. By consultation 3, you've reached a stable state (no changing lines = attractor reached).
Case Study: 6-Month Business Decision
Question: "Should I pivot my business model?"
Month 1: Hex 5 (Waiting) β Hex 48 (The Well)
Changing: Line 2
Interpretation: Wait, don't act yet. Transformation toward depth/resources (The Well).
Month 2: Hex 5 (Waiting) β Hex 63 (After Completion)
Changing: Line 5
Interpretation: Still waiting (Hex 5 repeats!). But transformation path changedβnow toward completion (Hex 63).
Month 3: Hex 43 (Breakthrough) β Hex 1 (Creative)
Changing: Line 1
Interpretation: System shifted! No longer waiting. Now in breakthrough phase, moving toward pure creative power.
Month 4: Hex 43 (Breakthrough) β Hex 49 (Revolution)
Changing: Line 6
Interpretation: Breakthrough continues (Hex 43 repeats). Transformation toward revolution/major change.
Month 5: Hex 1 (Creative) β Hex 14 (Great Possession)
Changing: Line 2
Interpretation: Full creative power activated (Hex 1). Moving toward abundance (Hex 14).
Month 6: Hex 1 (Creative) β Hex 1 (Creative)
Changing: None
Interpretation: Stable in creative power (Hex 1 repeats, no changing lines). System has reached attractor.
Sequence Analysis:
Primary: 5 β 5 β 43 β 43 β 1 β 1
Pattern: Waiting (2 months) β Breakthrough (2 months) β Creative power (2 months, stable)
Convergence:
β’ Months 1-2: High convergence on Waiting (Hex 5)
β’ Months 3-4: High convergence on Breakthrough (Hex 43)
β’ Months 5-6: High convergence on Creative (Hex 1, stable attractor)
Interpretation: The system went through three clear phases. The pivot should happen in Month 3 (when Hex 43 Breakthrough appears). By Month 6, the system has stabilized in creative power (Hex 1, no changing lines)βthe pivot was successful.
Validation: This iterative approach gave a clear timeline (wait 2 months, then act) that a single consultation could not provide.
When to Stop Iterating
Stop when:
1. High convergence achieved: Same hexagram 3+ times, no changing lines β System is stable, prediction is robust
2. Action is clear: You have enough information to make a decision
3. Persistent divergence: 5+ consultations with no convergence β System is unpredictable, stop consulting and act on your own judgment
Don't stop when:
1. Moderate convergence: Pattern is emerging but not yet stableβcontinue to refine
2. Major decision pending: If the stakes are high, iterate until confidence is high
