Imbolc Altar: The First Stirring of Spring
Share
Imbolc falls on February 1st or 2nd, halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, and it marks one of the most subtle and most significant moments in the Wheel of the Year: the first stirring of spring beneath the surface of the still-frozen earth. The days are noticeably longer than they were at Yule, the light is returning with increasing confidence, and beneath the snow and ice, the first bulbs are beginning to push upward toward the surface. Spring has not yet arrived — but it is coming, and Imbolc is the celebration of that coming, the acknowledgment of the first signs of life returning after the long dark of winter.
Imbolc is sacred to Brigid — the Celtic goddess of fire, healing, poetry, and smithcraft — and the Imbolc altar honors her triple nature: the fire of inspiration and creativity, the fire of the forge and transformation, and the fire of healing and renewal. The Imbolc altar is the altar of the first flame — the small, brave light that appears in the darkness before spring has fully arrived.
Colors
The Imbolc altar works with white, cream, pale yellow, and soft green — the colors of the season's first light. White and cream for the snow that still covers the earth and the purity of the new beginning that is stirring beneath it. Pale yellow for the first returning warmth of the sun. Soft green for the first shoots pushing up through the frozen ground.
Symbols and Objects
Imbolc symbols include a Brigid's cross woven from rushes or straw; candles — many candles, for Imbolc is the festival of returning light and the lighting of candles is its central practice; snowdrops and early spring flowers; a small cauldron or bowl of water for Brigid's healing aspect; and seeds for the intentions being planted in the new year.
Crystals
Imbolc crystals include amethyst for spiritual clarity and the awakening of inner vision; moonstone for the lunar energy of new beginnings; citrine for the first warmth of the returning sun; and selenite for purification and the clean, clear energy of the season's fresh start.
Plants and Botanicals
Imbolc botanicals include snowdrops for the first flowers of spring; rosemary for purification and the clearing of winter's heaviness; lavender for healing and the gentle energy of renewal; and angelica for protection and the blessing of the new year's intentions.
