Indigo Magic: Candles, Crystals, Herbs & Rituals for Psychic Vision and Intuition
This is Part 17 of 37 in the Color Magic series. For the spiritual foundations of indigo, see: Indigo: The Complete Spiritual Guide.
Indigo in the Magical Tradition
Indigo magic is the magic of the deep mind β of the perception that goes beyond the surface of things, of the knowing that arrives before the evidence, of the inner vision that sees what the physical eyes cannot. It is the most inward of the magical colors β less about acting on the world and more about perceiving it more deeply, more accurately, more completely. Indigo magic works best in stillness, in darkness, in the quiet that allows the deeper mind to be heard above the noise of the surface.
In contemporary magical practice, indigo is the color of:
- Psychic development β opening and strengthening the inner senses
- Third eye activation β awakening the perception that sees beyond the physical
- Dream work β enhancing dream recall, lucid dreaming, prophetic dreams
- Intuition enhancement β strengthening the signal of genuine inner knowing
- Scrying and divination β reading the patterns in mirrors, water, smoke, and other reflective surfaces
- Astral travel and journeying β conscious exploration of non-physical dimensions
- Truth perception β seeing through illusion, deception, and surface appearances
Indigo Candle Magic
What Indigo Candles Are For
Indigo candles carry the deep, mysterious energy of the third eye and the midnight sky. They are used for workings that require inner vision, psychic development, or the activation of the deep intuitive intelligence. Indigo candle magic is best performed in near-darkness β the candle's light against the dark creates the liminal atmosphere that indigo magic requires.
Use indigo candles for:
- Psychic development and the strengthening of intuition
- Third eye activation rituals
- Dream work β before sleep, to enhance dream recall and prophetic dreaming
- Scrying and divination workings
- Truth perception β seeing through deception or confusion
- Meditation on inner vision and deep knowing
- Saturday workings β Saturn's day amplifies depth, structure, and the long view of genuine wisdom

Dressing an Indigo Candle
Anoint indigo candles with frankincense oil (spiritual elevation, the divine mind), sandalwood oil (meditation, the sacred), or mugwort oil (psychic opening, dream enhancement). Roll the dressed candle in dried mugwort, star anise, or lavender. Carve your intention: SEE, KNOW, OPEN, PERCEIVE, VISION, TRUTH, AWAKEN.
Indigo Herbs, Resins, and Botanicals
Mugwort
The premier herb of psychic development β mugwort has been used across cultures for dream enhancement, psychic opening, and the activation of the inner senses. It is the herb of the third eye par excellence. Burn it as incense before psychic work, make a dream pillow stuffed with dried mugwort, or drink mugwort tea (in moderation) before sleep for enhanced dream recall. Note: avoid during pregnancy.
Star Anise
The star-shaped seed of psychic power β star anise is used in indigo magic for psychic development, luck, and the opening of the inner senses. Its star shape makes it a natural symbol of the third eye's radiating perception. Place star anise on your altar during psychic workings or burn it as incense.
Frankincense
The resin of spiritual elevation β frankincense raises the vibration of any space and creates the conditions for genuine spiritual perception. It has been used in sacred ritual across cultures for thousands of years precisely because it works: it shifts consciousness toward the receptive, open state that genuine intuition and psychic perception require.
Sandalwood
The wood of meditation and the sacred mind β sandalwood promotes the deep, still, receptive state of consciousness that indigo magic requires. Burn it as incense during meditation, psychic development work, or any working that requires the mind to be genuinely quiet.
Eyebright
The herb whose name says everything β eyebright has been used for centuries to enhance both physical and psychic vision. Use it in sachets for psychic development, add it to ritual baths before divination work, or burn it as incense to open the inner eye.
Blue Lotus
Shared with blue magic, blue lotus in indigo workings emphasizes its psychic opening and third eye activation qualities β the sacred flower of ancient Egyptian spiritual practice, used to open the inner senses to the perception of the divine.
Indigo Crystals for Magic
Amethyst β The Psychic Stone
Amethyst is the most widely used stone for psychic development and third eye activation. It raises the vibration of the mind, protects against psychic overwhelm, and creates the clear, elevated state of consciousness that genuine intuitive perception requires. Place amethyst on your third eye during meditation, use it in crystal grids for psychic development, or simply keep it in your sleeping space for enhanced dream work.
Iolite β The Vision Stone
Iolite is the stone of inner vision β deep indigo blue, used for shamanic journeying, astral travel, and the activation of the third eye's perceptual capacity. It is particularly effective for those who want to develop their ability to perceive non-physical dimensions of reality. Use iolite in meditation, hold it during divination work, or place it on your third eye for direct activation.
Labradorite β The Stone of the Veil
Labradorite is the stone of the magical practitioner β its iridescent flash reveals the hidden dimensions of reality, the magic beneath the surface of ordinary life. It is the stone of the person who sees what others cannot, who perceives the patterns and connections that are invisible to ordinary perception. Use labradorite as your primary psychic development stone, carry it during divination work, or place it on your altar as a constant reminder that reality is deeper than it appears.
Azurite β The Third Eye Activator
Azurite is one of the most powerful stones for direct third eye activation β deep blue-indigo, it was used by ancient Egyptian priests for psychic development and the opening of the inner eye. Use it with care; it is a strong stone that can produce vivid dreams and heightened psychic sensitivity.
Complete Indigo Magic Rituals
Ritual 1: Third Eye Activation
Best timing: Full moon, midnight, Thursday or Saturday
You will need: Indigo candle, amethyst, iolite or labradorite, frankincense incense, dark cloth for blindfold
Method: Perform this ritual in near-darkness. Light the frankincense incense and the indigo candle. Lie down and place the amethyst on your third eye β the center of your forehead, between and slightly above your eyebrows. Place the iolite in your left hand and the labradorite in your right.
Close your eyes. Breathe deeply. Feel the weight of the amethyst on your forehead. Visualize a deep indigo light at your third eye β a point of concentrated perception, like a star in the center of your forehead. With each breath, feel it growing brighter, more focused, more alive.
Speak: I open my inner eye. I trust my perception. I see clearly, deeply, truly. What is hidden becomes visible. What is obscured becomes clear. My inner vision is awake.
Lie in this state for 20-30 minutes. Notice what arises β images, impressions, knowings. Do not analyze them during the ritual. Simply receive them. Write them down immediately afterward.
Ritual 2: Dream Prophecy Working
Best timing: Before sleep, full moon or dark moon
You will need: Indigo candle (burn briefly before sleep), mugwort incense, amethyst under pillow, journal beside bed
Method: One hour before sleep, burn the indigo candle and mugwort incense for 20 minutes. Hold the amethyst in both hands and set a clear intention: I receive clear and meaningful dreams tonight. I remember what I receive. My dreams carry genuine guidance.
Place the amethyst under your pillow. Keep your journal and a pen beside your bed. Upon waking β even in the middle of the night β write immediately. The dream fades within minutes; capture it before it goes. Over time, patterns will emerge in your dream record that reveal the genuine prophetic and guidance function of your dreaming mind.
Ritual 3: Scrying for Inner Truth
Best timing: Full moon, midnight
You will need: Indigo candle, black mirror or bowl of dark water, labradorite, frankincense
Method: Set up your scrying surface β a black mirror or a dark bowl filled with water β so that it reflects the indigo candle's flame. Burn frankincense. Hold the labradorite in your non-dominant hand.
Soften your gaze β do not stare hard at the mirror, but let your eyes relax, as if you are looking through it rather than at it. Breathe slowly. Allow your mind to become quiet. Hold a question lightly in your awareness β not demanding an answer, but simply offering the question to the mirror's depth.
Notice what arises β images, impressions, feelings, words. Do not force interpretation. Simply receive. Write down everything you notice, without editing or evaluating. The meaning often becomes clear later, when the analytical mind has had time to integrate what the intuitive mind perceived.
