Ingwaz Rune Meditation: Entering Sacred Gestation & Trusting the Inner Seed

By Nicole Lau
Ingwaz (ᛜ) is the rune of the seed — of the sacred gestation that precedes every birth, of the inner potential that is already complete and waiting for its moment of expression, of the completion of one cycle that makes the beginning of the next possible. To meditate with Ingwaz is to enter the sacred space of the seed: the dark, warm, enclosed space in which the most important transformation happens invisibly, before the moment of emergence. This is the meditation of patient trust — of the willingness to remain in the dark, to honor the process that cannot be rushed, to trust that what is developing in the hidden space is developing perfectly.
This meditation is particularly powerful for: any period of inner development that has not yet produced visible results, the completion of one life cycle before the beginning of the next, developing patience with processes that cannot be rushed, connecting with the inner seed of potential that is already complete within you, and any practice that requires the willingness to trust the hidden process.
Before You Begin
Light a green or deep brown candle. Hold a seed in your hand — an acorn, a wheat seed, or any seed that feels significant. If you have a Ingwaz rune stone or amulet, hold it in your other hand. Work in a quiet, enclosed space — a small room, a tent, anywhere that feels contained and protected. Ingwaz does not work in open, expansive spaces; it requires the warmth of the enclosed space.
Take three slow, contained breaths — not the expansive breaths of Sowilo or the deep breaths of Laguz, but the quiet, internal breaths of someone who is gathering inward, who is becoming more concentrated and more complete with each breath.
Part One: The Seed
Close your eyes. Feel the seed in your hand — its weight, its smoothness, its extraordinary completeness. This small thing contains within it the full pattern of what it will become. The oak is already present in the acorn; the wheat field is already present in the grain. Everything that will be expressed is already here, waiting for the right conditions.
Now feel yourself as this seed. Feel the completeness of your own potential — the full pattern of what you are capable of becoming, already present within you, waiting for the right conditions to express itself. You are not incomplete; you are a seed. The fullness is already here.
Ask Ingwaz: "What potential within me is already complete, already fully formed, waiting only for the right conditions to emerge? What is the seed that I am carrying?"
Part Two: The Dark Earth
In your mind's eye, feel yourself sinking into the dark earth — the warm, rich, dark soil that is the seed's home during gestation. This is not the frightening darkness of Hagalaz or the mysterious darkness of Perthro; it is the nurturing darkness of the womb, the darkness that is full of life and warmth and the slow, patient work of transformation.
Feel the earth around you: its warmth, its density, its extraordinary aliveness. The earth is not passive; it is actively working, providing everything the seed needs — moisture, warmth, minerals, the slow release of energy that feeds the germinating seed. You are held in this active, nurturing darkness.
Ask Ingwaz: "What is the dark earth providing for my development right now? What conditions are present in my life that are supporting the gestation of my potential, even if I cannot see the results yet?"
Part Three: The Invisible Work
In the dark earth, the seed is doing the most important work of its existence — and none of it is visible. The root is forming before the shoot; the internal structure is organizing before the external form appears. The most significant transformation is always invisible.
Bring to mind any area of your life where you are in a period of invisible development — where you are doing the inner work, where the process is underway but the results are not yet visible. Feel the reality of this invisible work: it is real, it is significant, it is the foundation of everything that will emerge.
Ask Ingwaz: "What invisible work is currently underway in my life? What is developing in the hidden space that I cannot yet see but that is real and significant?" Trust whatever comes — the seed knows what it is becoming, even when the gardener cannot yet see it.
Part Four: The Completion
Ingwaz is also the rune of completion — of the cycle that has reached its fullness and is ready to release into the next phase. The seed that has fully gestated is ready to germinate; the energy that has gathered to its peak is ready to release. This is not the beginning (that is Berkano) or the harvest (that is Jera) but the moment of completion that makes both possible.
Ask yourself: what cycle in my life is currently completing? What has reached its fullness and is ready to release? What am I being called to complete before I can begin the next phase? Feel the satisfaction of completion — the rightness of the cycle that has run its full course, the readiness of the energy that has gathered to its peak.
Part Five: The Ingwaz Galdr
With the seed energy fully present and the gestation clearly felt, begin the Galdr. Take a quiet, contained breath. On the exhale, chant: "Inggggg-waz" — contained, resonant, like the hum of potential gathering within an enclosed space. The “Ing” should resonate in your lower belly, in the body's center of gestation; the “waz” should be quiet and complete, like a door gently closing on the sacred inner space.
Chant nine times. With each repetition, feel the seed energy growing more concentrated, more complete, more fully gathered toward its moment of release. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of pregnant stillness — the feeling of being completely full, completely ready, waiting only for the right moment to emerge.
Part Six: Closing
After the Galdr, sit quietly for a few minutes in the dark earth. Feel the quality of Ingwaz's energy — the patient completeness of the seed, the trust in the invisible process, the readiness that does not force but simply waits for the right moment. Let this feeling settle into your body as a reference point for what genuine trust in the process feels like.
Open your eyes slowly. Look at the seed in your hand one more time — feel its completeness, its patience, its extraordinary potential. Then plant it, if you can — the physical act of planting a seed is one of the most powerful Ingwaz practices available.
Ingwaz Meditation for Specific Situations
For impatience with the process: When you are frustrated that your inner work is not producing visible results, perform the full Ingwaz meditation with the specific situation held in mind during Part Three. Ingwaz's energy restores the trust in the invisible process that impatience erodes.
For completing cycles: When you sense that a significant life cycle is completing — a relationship, a career phase, a creative project, a period of personal development — perform Part Four of this meditation to honor the completion and prepare for the release into the next phase.
For creative gestation: When a creative project is in its early, hidden development phase — when it is not yet ready to be shared or expressed — perform the full meditation to protect and nourish the creative seed through its gestation.
Deepen your Ingwaz meditation with the Elder Futhark Meditation: 24 Runes Journey Audio — a complete guided journey through all 24 runes that places Ingwaz's sacred gestation in its full runic context. For the ancestral dimension of Norse seed wisdom, Ancestral Runes: Viking Lineage Connection Audio connects you with the ancestral wisdom of your Norse forebears who understood the sacred cycle of seed, gestation, birth, and harvest. To carry this meditative trust into daily practice, I find the Void Whisper Audio beautifully complements the invisible work, while the Blue Moon Audio honors the rare moment of emergence. The Magnetic Attraction Field Audio nurtures the seed’s pull toward expression, and the Inner Sunlight Audio provides the warmth needed for growth. Finally, the 13 New Moon Rituals align beautifully with the cycles of completion and new beginnings that Ingwaz so gently teaches us to trust.
