Isa Rune Meditation: Entering Sacred Stillness & Inner Clarity

By Nicole Lau
Isa (ᛁ) is the rune of ice — of the absolute stillness that descends when all movement ceases, when the river freezes and the world holds its breath in the deep of winter. To meditate with Isa is to enter this stillness completely: to become, for a time, like ice — perfectly clear, perfectly still, perfectly present. This is not the stillness of relaxation or the stillness of sleep; it is the alert, crystalline stillness of ice, which is not absent but suspended, not dead but waiting, not empty but perfectly full of its own nature.
This meditation is particularly powerful for: accessing deep inner clarity when the mind is turbulent or confused, creating a quality of stillness in the midst of chaotic circumstances, enforcing necessary rest and withdrawal when you have been moving too fast, working with the power of suspension — of deliberately pausing a situation or process, and developing the capacity for the deep, motionless presence that is the foundation of all genuine meditation.
Before You Begin
Create the conditions for Isa's stillness before you begin. Turn off all sound. Dim or extinguish all lights except a single white or silver candle. If possible, lower the temperature of your space slightly — Isa works best in cool conditions. Place a bowl of cold water or a piece of ice before you. Sit in a position you can maintain without moving for an extended period — Isa's meditation requires genuine physical stillness, not just mental quiet.
Before closing your eyes, spend one minute gazing at the candle flame without moving. Do not blink more than necessary. Do not adjust your position. Simply be still. This minute of physical stillness is Isa's entry practice — the body leading the mind into the rune's frequency.
Part One: The Freezing
Close your eyes. In your mind's eye, find yourself standing beside a river in late autumn — the last days before winter fully arrives. The water is still flowing, but slowly; the air has the particular cold clarity of the season's turning. You can feel winter approaching like a held breath.
Then — the temperature drops. Slowly, at the edges of the river, ice begins to form. You watch it spread: first a thin skin at the margins, then thicker plates moving toward the center, until the entire river is frozen. The movement that was there a moment ago is completely gone. The river is still. The world is still. Everything is held in suspension.
Feel this freezing in your own body. Starting at your feet, feel a quality of stillness moving upward through you — not numbness, not cold, but the crystalline stillness of ice. Your feet become still. Your legs become still. Your hips, your belly, your chest, your arms, your hands — all becoming still, all entering the suspended state of ice. Finally, your mind becomes still: not empty, but perfectly clear, like ice that reveals what lies beneath it with perfect precision.
Part Two: The Clarity of Ice
In this state of complete stillness, notice what becomes visible. Ice is not opaque — it is transparent. What was hidden beneath the turbulence of the flowing river is now perfectly visible through the clear ice above it. The stillness reveals what the movement concealed.
What do you see clearly now that the turbulence of your ordinary mind has stilled? What truth, what understanding, what aspect of your situation becomes visible in this crystalline clarity? Do not reach for it — simply allow it to become visible, the way objects become visible through clear ice when you stop and look.
Isa's clarity is not the clarity of analysis or reasoning; it is the clarity of pure perception — of seeing what is actually there, without the distortion of movement, emotion, or desire. In this stillness, what is true becomes simply visible. Trust what you see.
Part Three: The Preservation
Ice preserves. The mammoth frozen in the permafrost for ten thousand years; the seeds preserved in the ice of a glacier; the food kept fresh through the winter in the ice house — ice is the great preserver, the force that holds what is precious in suspension until the conditions for its release are right.
What in your life needs to be preserved right now? What is precious and vulnerable, needing the protection of Isa's stillness until the right time for its release? Hold it in your awareness and feel Isa's ice forming around it — not imprisoning it, but protecting it, keeping it safe and intact until the thaw comes.
This is Isa's gift of preservation: the ability to hold what matters in perfect suspension, unchanged and unharmed, through whatever winter must be endured before spring returns.
Part Four: The Isa Galdr
From within the stillness, begin the Galdr. Take a slow, cool breath. On the exhale, chant: "Iiiii-sa" — sustained, cool, perfectly even. The “I” should be long and clear, like a single note held without vibrato; the “sa” should be a soft, cool release. There should be no variation in tone or volume — Isa's Galdr is the most perfectly still of all the runic chants.
Chant nine times, with a full breath of stillness between each chant. With each repetition, feel the ice of your inner stillness becoming clearer, more crystalline, more perfectly transparent. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of absolute inner quiet — the silence of the frozen world, in which everything is perfectly present and perfectly still.
Part Five: The Thaw Within the Ice
Isa's stillness is not permanent — ice always melts eventually. Within the frozen river, the water is still there, still alive, waiting for the warmth that will release it. Within your stillness, your vitality, your movement, your life force is still present — simply suspended, resting, gathering itself for the return of flow.
Feel this: the life within the stillness, the movement within the ice, the spring within the winter. Isa is not death; it is the deep rest that precedes renewal. The river will flow again. The world will move again. But for now, in this stillness, there is a quality of completeness — of being exactly where you need to be, doing exactly what this moment requires: nothing.
Part Six: Closing
When you are ready to return, feel the ice beginning to thaw — slowly, from the inside out. Feel movement returning to your fingers, your toes, your breath deepening. Take three slow breaths, each one slightly warmer and fuller than the last. Open your eyes slowly.
After an Isa meditation, move slowly and deliberately for at least ten minutes. Do not rush back into activity. Let the quality of Isa's stillness linger in your body as long as possible — it is a precious state, and the clarity it brings is easily lost in the rush of ordinary movement.
Isa Meditation for Specific Situations
For mental turbulence: When the mind is racing, anxious, or overwhelmed, a brief Isa practice — just Part One and the Galdr — can create a quality of stillness that interrupts the turbulence and restores clarity. Even five minutes of Isa's freezing practice can shift the quality of mental activity significantly.
For enforced rest: During periods of illness, exhaustion, or necessary withdrawal, Isa meditation helps you inhabit the stillness consciously rather than simply suffering through it. The enforced rest becomes a practice of preservation rather than mere inactivity.
Before important decisions: A full Isa meditation before any significant decision creates the clarity of ice — the ability to see what is actually there, without the distortion of desire, fear, or turbulent emotion. Decisions made from Isa's clarity tend to be more accurate and more aligned with genuine need.
