Ix Mayan Day Sign: The Jaguar & the Power of Earth Magic

Ix: The Night Sun
Ix is the fourteenth of the 20 Mayan Day Signs — the sign of the jaguar, of the wizard, of the shamanic power that moves through the earth and through the night. In Mayan cosmology, the jaguar is the most sacred of all animals — it is the night sun, the solar deity in its nocturnal form, the power that moves through the underworld and emerges at dawn transformed. The jaguar is the animal of the shaman, the creature that can move between worlds, that sees in the dark, and that carries the power of the earth in its body. To be born under the sign of Ix is to carry this shamanic power — to be a person of extraordinary earth magic, deep intuition, and the ability to move between the visible and invisible worlds.
The glyph of Ix depicts the spotted skin of the jaguar — the pattern of stars on the night sky reflected in the animal's coat. This image captures the essential quality of Ix: a sign of the person who carries the cosmos in their body, who is simultaneously earthly and celestial, who sees the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred.
