Jera Rune Meditation: Aligning with Sacred Cycles & Harvest Abundance

Jera Rune Meditation: Aligning with Sacred Cycles & Harvest Abundance

By Nicole Lau

Jera (ᛃ) is the rune of the year — of the sacred cycle that turns from planting to growth to harvest to rest and back to planting again. To meditate with Jera is to step into the larger rhythm of the living world: to feel yourself as part of the turning year, subject to its seasons, nourished by its cycles, and ultimately harvested by its inevitable completion. This is the meditation of the farmer who knows that you cannot rush the harvest — who plants in faith, tends with patience, and receives the abundance that the cycle brings in its own time.

This meditation is particularly powerful for: developing patience during the long growing season of any significant work, aligning with right timing when you feel out of sync with natural cycles, opening to receive the harvest of long-term effort, healing impatience and the tendency to force outcomes before they are ready, and reconnecting with the sacred rhythm of the living world when you have been too long in artificial environments.

Before You Begin

Light a gold or amber candle. If possible, have something from the natural world before you — a piece of fruit, some grain, a handful of autumn leaves, a flower. These physical representatives of the living cycle amplify Jera's energy significantly. If you have a Jera rune stone or amulet, hold it in both hands — feel its weight, its solidity, the patience of stone that has been shaped over geological time.

Take three slow, deep breaths — the measured breaths of someone who is not in a hurry, who knows that the harvest comes in its own time. Feel your body settle into the chair or cushion, heavy and grounded, like a seed settling into the earth.

Part One: The Turning Wheel

Close your eyes. In your mind's eye, see the year as a great wheel — the wheel of the seasons, turning slowly and majestically through its eight sacred points: the winter solstice, Imbolc, the spring equinox, Beltane, the summer solstice, Lammas, the autumn equinox, Samhain. Watch the wheel turn. Feel its rhythm — steady, inevitable, perfectly timed.

Now feel where you are on the wheel. What season of the year are you in? And more importantly — what season of your life, your work, your significant projects? Are you in the planting phase, the growing phase, the harvest phase, or the resting phase? Jera asks you to know where you are in the cycle, because the wisdom of each phase is different and the actions appropriate to each phase are different.

If you are in the planting phase: your work is to plant well, to choose your seeds carefully, to prepare the ground with care. The harvest is far away; do not rush it.

If you are in the growing phase: your work is to tend faithfully, to water and weed and protect what is growing, to trust the process even when you cannot yet see the fruit. The harvest is coming; do not abandon the field.

If you are in the harvest phase: your work is to gather what is ripe, to receive the abundance that your planting and tending have produced, to celebrate the completion of the cycle. Do not leave the harvest in the field; gather it now.

If you are in the resting phase: your work is to rest, to allow the field to lie fallow, to compost what has been harvested and prepare the ground for the next planting. Do not force new growth before the rest is complete.

Part Two: The Field

In your mind's eye, find yourself standing in a Norse field at harvest time — late summer, the grain golden and heavy, the air warm and fragrant with ripeness. This is your field: the field of your life's work, your significant projects, your long-term efforts.

Walk through the field. What is ripe and ready to harvest? What is still growing and needs more time? What has already been harvested and left stubble? What seeds are already in the ground for next year's crop?

Feel the satisfaction of the farmer who has tended this field through the full cycle — who planted in the cold of early spring, who tended through the heat of summer, who waited through the long growing season with faith that the harvest would come. And now it has. The grain is golden. The harvest is here.

Part Three: Receiving the Harvest

Stand in the center of your field and open your arms wide — the gesture of receiving, of welcoming the harvest. Say, either aloud or in your mind: "I receive the harvest of my planting and tending. I receive the abundance that the cycle has produced. I am worthy of this harvest. I have earned it through patient work and faithful tending."

Feel the harvest energy flowing into you — the warmth of the harvest sun, the weight of the ripe grain, the satisfaction of completion. This is Jera's gift: not just the abundance of the harvest, but the deep satisfaction of having completed a full cycle, of having honored the process from beginning to end.

Now ask Jera: "What harvest am I ready to receive that I have been reluctant to claim? What abundance is waiting for me to simply open my hands and take it?" Many people plant and tend faithfully but then fail to harvest — they leave the grain in the field, unable to receive what they have earned. Jera asks you to harvest fully, to receive completely, to honor the cycle by gathering what is ripe.

Part Four: The Patience of the Cycle

Now bring to mind something you are waiting for — a project, a goal, a relationship, a healing that has not yet come to harvest. Hold it in your awareness and feel it in the context of the turning year. Where is it in the cycle? Is it still in the ground, germinating? Is it growing but not yet ripe? Is it approaching harvest but not quite there?

Ask Jera: "What season is this in the cycle of [what you are waiting for]? What is the right action for this season?" The answer may be to tend more faithfully, to wait more patiently, to prepare for an imminent harvest, or to rest and allow the field to lie fallow before the next planting. Trust the answer that comes from the cycle rather than from your impatience.

Part Five: The Jera Galdr

With the harvest energy fully present and the cycle clearly felt, begin the Galdr. Take a deep, satisfied breath. On the exhale, chant: "Jeeeee-ra" — warm, rounded, full of the satisfaction of harvest. The “Je” should open your chest; the “ra” should resonate in your belly like the warmth of harvest sun.

Chant nine times. With each repetition, feel the turning of the year in your body — the rhythm of the cycle, the patience of the farmer, the abundance of the harvest. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of deep, grounded satisfaction — the feeling of being in right relationship with time, with cycles, with the natural order of things.

Part Six: Closing

After the Galdr, sit quietly for a few minutes. Feel the quality of Jera's energy — the warmth, the abundance, the deep patience of the cycle. Let this feeling settle into your body as a reference point for what right timing feels like.

Open your eyes. Eat the fruit or grain you prepared — the physical harvest that seals Jera's energy in your body. Then go tend your field: do one concrete action in service of your most significant long-term work.

Jera Meditation for Specific Situations

For impatience: When you are frustrated by the slowness of a process, perform Part Four of this meditation with the specific situation held in mind. Jera's perspective of the full cycle almost always reveals that the timing is right — that the grain is not yet ripe, and that forcing the harvest would damage the crop.

At the completion of a major project: Perform the full meditation at the completion of any significant long-term work. Part Three — receiving the harvest — is particularly important for people who tend to immediately move on to the next project without fully receiving and celebrating what they have accomplished.

At each seasonal turning: A brief Jera meditation at each of the eight sacred points of the year — the solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter days — keeps you aligned with the natural cycles and helps you understand what phase of the year's work you are in.
