Kabbalistic Banishing: The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP)
Share
The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram — universally known in the Western magical tradition by its acronym LBRP — is the single most important foundational practice in Hermetic Kabbalistic magic. It is the daily practice that every serious practitioner of the Western magical tradition is expected to perform, the cornerstone upon which all other magical work is built, and the most elegant and comprehensive expression of Kabbalistic magical principles in ritual form. To understand the LBRP is to understand the essential mechanics of Kabbalistic magic itself.
The History and Origins of the LBRP
The LBRP was developed within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the late 19th century, drawing on earlier traditions of Kabbalistic magic, Rosicrucian ritual, and Freemasonic ceremonial practice. Its primary architects were Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers and William Wynn Westcott, who synthesized elements from the Kabbalistic tradition — particularly the use of divine names, the four archangels, and the Kabbalistic Cross — with the Western ceremonial magic tradition of ritual circle casting and elemental invocation.
The ritual was part of the Golden Dawn's Neophyte grade curriculum — the very first magical practice taught to new initiates — reflecting the tradition's understanding that banishing and purification must precede all other magical work. Israel Regardie's publication of the Golden Dawn's secret rituals in the 1930s made the LBRP available to the general public, and it has since become the most widely practiced ritual in the Western magical tradition, used by practitioners of virtually every school of Western esotericism.
The Purpose of the LBRP
The LBRP serves multiple interconnected purposes that make it an indispensable daily practice:
Purification and Banishing — The primary function of the LBRP is to clear the practitioner's personal space — both their physical environment and their subtle energy field — of unwanted influences, negative energies, astral debris, and any entities or thought-forms that may have accumulated. This purification creates a clean, clear space in which magical work can be performed without interference.
Protection — By invoking the four great archangels at the cardinal directions and establishing a circle of divine light, the LBRP creates a sphere of divine protection around the practitioner that shields them from negative influences during and after magical work.
Centering and Alignment — The Kabbalistic Cross that opens and closes the LBRP aligns the practitioner's consciousness with the divine source, establishing a clear connection between the individual self and the infinite divine reality. This alignment is the essential prerequisite for all effective magical work.
Energy Cultivation — Regular practice of the LBRP gradually builds the practitioner's subtle energy body, strengthening their aura, developing their capacity to work with divine energy, and increasing their overall magical power and sensitivity.
Consciousness Training — The LBRP trains the practitioner in the essential skills of magical practice: visualization, divine name vibration, ritual gesture, and the maintenance of focused intention throughout a multi-stage ritual operation.
The Structure of the LBRP
The LBRP consists of four distinct sections, each serving a specific function in the overall ritual:
- The Kabbalistic Cross
- The Formulation of the Pentagrams
- The Invocation of the Archangels
- The Repetition of the Kabbalistic Cross
Part One: The Kabbalistic Cross
The Kabbalistic Cross is a ritual gesture that maps the divine name YHVH onto the practitioner's body, aligning their physical form with the divine structure of the Tree of Life and establishing a connection to the divine source before the ritual proper begins.
The practitioner stands facing East, takes a deep breath, and performs the following sequence:
Ateh (Thou art) — Touch the forehead with the right hand, visualizing a sphere of brilliant white light above the crown of the head descending to the forehead. Vibrate "Ateh" (Ah-teh).
Malkuth (The Kingdom) — Draw the hand down to the chest and then to the groin area, visualizing a shaft of brilliant white light descending from the crown through the body to the feet and below, connecting to the earth. Vibrate "Malkuth" (Mal-koot).
Ve-Geburah (And the Power) — Touch the right shoulder, visualizing a sphere of red light at the right shoulder. Vibrate "Ve-Geburah" (Veh-Geh-boo-rah).
Ve-Gedulah (And the Glory) — Touch the left shoulder, visualizing a sphere of blue light at the left shoulder, and a horizontal shaft of light connecting both shoulders. Vibrate "Ve-Gedulah" (Veh-Geh-doo-lah).
Le-Olam, Amen (Forever, Amen) — Clasp the hands at the heart center, visualizing the cross of light fully formed within the body — the vertical shaft from crown to earth, the horizontal shaft from shoulder to shoulder, meeting at the heart center (Tiphareth). Vibrate "Le-Olam, Amen" (Leh-Oh-lahm, Ah-men).
The Kabbalistic Cross maps the divine name YHVH onto the body: Ateh (Kether/Crown), Malkuth (Malkuth/Kingdom), Ve-Geburah (Geburah/Severity), Ve-Gedulah (Chesed/Mercy). It simultaneously invokes the Middle Pillar of the Tree of Life within the practitioner's body and establishes the horizontal axis of the Pillars of Severity and Mercy, creating a living cross of divine light within the practitioner's being.
Part Two: The Formulation of the Pentagrams
The practitioner now traces a banishing Earth pentagram at each of the four cardinal directions, vibrating a divine name at each quarter to charge the pentagram with divine power.
The banishing Earth pentagram is drawn by starting at the lower left point and drawing upward to the top point, then continuing to the lower right, upper left, upper right, and back to the lower left — a specific sequence that is understood to banish the Earth element and, by extension, all unwanted material and astral influences.
East — Face East, trace the banishing pentagram in brilliant blue-white light, thrust the right index finger (or magical weapon) into the center of the pentagram, and vibrate YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh). Visualize the pentagram blazing with divine light.
South — Turn to face South (keeping the right arm extended, drawing a line of light connecting East to South), trace the banishing pentagram, and vibrate Adonai (Ah-doh-nye).
West — Turn to face West (drawing the connecting line), trace the banishing pentagram, and vibrate Eheieh (Eh-heh-yeh).
North — Turn to face North (drawing the connecting line), trace the banishing pentagram, and vibrate AGLA (Ah-geh-lah — a notarikon of Ateh Gibor Le-Olam Adonai, "Thou art mighty forever, O Lord").
Return to face East, completing the circle of light that now surrounds the practitioner, with a blazing pentagram at each of the four quarters connected by a continuous line of divine light.
Part Three: The Invocation of the Archangels
The practitioner now stands in the center of the circle, facing East, arms extended to the sides in the form of a cross, and invokes the four great archangels at the four quarters:
Before me, Raphael — Visualize the great archangel Raphael before you in the East, robed in yellow and violet, carrying the caduceus, surrounded by the fresh winds of dawn. Raphael is the archangel of Air, of healing, of the East, and of the path of the Sun across the sky.
Behind me, Gabriel — Visualize the great archangel Gabriel behind you in the West, robed in blue and orange, carrying a cup or chalice, surrounded by the deep waters of the ocean. Gabriel is the archangel of Water, of the Moon, of the West, and of divine communication and revelation.
On my right hand, Michael — Visualize the great archangel Michael to your right in the South, robed in red and green, carrying a flaming sword, surrounded by the fire of the midday sun. Michael is the archangel of Fire, of the Sun, of the South, and of divine protection and courage.
On my left hand, Uriel — Visualize the great archangel Uriel to your left in the North, robed in citrine, olive, russet, and black (the colors of Malkuth), carrying sheaves of wheat or a pentacle, surrounded by the rich earth of the material world. Uriel is the archangel of Earth, of the North, and of the material world and its hidden spiritual dimensions.
For about me flames the pentagram — Visualize the four blazing pentagrams at the four quarters, connected by the circle of divine light.
And in the column shines the six-rayed star — Visualize a brilliant hexagram (Star of David) blazing in the column of light above and below you — the six-pointed star of Tiphareth, the solar heart of the Tree of Life, shining at the center of the ritual space.
Part Four: The Repetition of the Kabbalistic Cross
The ritual closes with a repetition of the Kabbalistic Cross, identical to the opening. This repetition seals the ritual, grounds the divine energy that has been invoked, and returns the practitioner's consciousness to ordinary awareness while maintaining the protection and purification that the ritual has established.
The Kabbalistic Symbolism of the LBRP
Every element of the LBRP is saturated with Kabbalistic symbolism that rewards careful study:
The four divine names at the four quarters (YHVH, Adonai, Eheieh, AGLA) correspond to the four worlds of Kabbalah (Atziluth, Assiah, Atziluth again at a different level, and a notarikon of divine attributes), the four elements, and the four letters of the Tetragrammaton.
The four archangels correspond to the four elements, the four directions, the four Sephiroth of the lower Tree (Raphael/Tiphareth, Gabriel/Yesod, Michael/Hod, Uriel/Malkuth in some attributions), and the four living creatures of Ezekiel's vision (the man, the eagle, the lion, and the bull).
The pentagram represents the five elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Spirit), the five Sephiroth of the lower Tree (Chesed, Geburah, Tiphareth, Netzach, Hod), and the divine proportion of the human form — the Vitruvian Man inscribed within the five-pointed star.
The hexagram invoked at the close of the archangel section represents Tiphareth, the solar heart of the Tree of Life, and the union of the divine and the human — the six-pointed star formed by the interlocking triangles of fire (pointing up) and water (pointing down), the above and the below united in the heart of the practitioner.
Daily Practice: How to Integrate the LBRP
The tradition recommends performing the LBRP twice daily — once in the morning to purify and protect the space for the day's activities, and once in the evening to clear the accumulated energies of the day before sleep. This twice-daily practice, maintained consistently over months and years, produces a gradual but profound transformation of the practitioner's consciousness and subtle energy body.
Beginners should focus first on learning the physical sequence of the ritual — the gestures, the directions, the divine names — before adding the visualization components. Once the physical sequence is memorized and flows naturally, the visualizations can be added layer by layer: first the pentagrams, then the archangels, then the full Kabbalistic Cross visualization. The goal is eventually to perform the entire ritual with full, vivid visualization of every element while maintaining the vibration of the divine names and the physical gestures — a complete integration of body, voice, imagination, and intention.
Archangel Metatron: Sacred Geometry & Ascension Audio provides powerful energetic support for LBRP practice, invoking the archangelic presence that oversees all Kabbalistic ritual work and opening the practitioner's consciousness to the angelic frequencies that the LBRP invokes. For deepening the protective and purifying dimension of the practice, the Iron Wind: Energy Purification & Boundary Shield Audio reinforces the energetic boundaries and purification that the LBRP establishes — a powerful sonic complement to the ritual's banishing and protective functions. The Sacred Space Cleanse printable kit offers a tangible framework for daily cleansing that aligns beautifully with the ritual's intention, while the Void Whisper Audio supports the deep inner stillness that emerges when the ritual's purification clears the astral noise. The Emotional Filter Ritual Kit provides a complementary practice for refining the emotional body that the LBRP begins to align, and the Shadow Work Tarot deepens the self-awareness that consistent ritual work cultivates—each of these tools has become a meaningful part of my own journey with the LBRP, and I find they enrich the foundation this sacred ritual provides.
Beyond the LBRP: The Greater Rituals
The LBRP is the foundation, but it is not the ceiling. Once the practitioner has established a solid daily practice of the LBRP, they can progress to the Greater Rituals of the Pentagram (which invoke rather than banish specific elemental forces) and the Rituals of the Hexagram (which work with planetary and Sephirothic forces at a higher level of the Tree). The Middle Pillar Exercise is typically added to the daily practice alongside the LBRP, and together these two practices form the complete foundation of Hermetic Kabbalistic magical training.
The LBRP is, in the deepest sense, a complete magical system in miniature — a ritual that contains within its elegant structure the entire cosmology of Kabbalistic magic: the divine names, the archangels, the four elements, the Tree of Life, the Pillars, the Middle Pillar, and the fundamental principle that all genuine magical work begins and ends with divine alignment, purification, and the invocation of divine protection. The practitioner who truly masters the LBRP has, in a very real sense, mastered the essential principles of Kabbalistic magic itself.
