Its name means "water" or "lake," and the Norse Rune Poem honors it with a sense of both power and danger: "Water is to people seemingly endless, if they should venture out on an unsteady ship, and the sea waves frighten them very much, and the sea-horse does not heed its bridle." Laguz is the rune of the waters that cannot be controlled — of the unconscious depths that have their own currents and their own wisdom, that carry you where they will if you do not know how to navigate them.
Crafting a Laguz amulet is an act of aligning yourself with the wisdom of the deep waters — of opening to the intuitive knowing that flows from the unconscious, of developing the emotional intelligence that allows you to navigate the currents of feeling and relationship with skill and grace. Understanding Laguz's Amulet Energy
Laguz (ᛚ) operates at the level of the deep unconscious — of the vast, dark waters that lie beneath the surface of ordinary awareness, that contain the accumulated wisdom of all experience, that flow according to their own currents and their own logic. Alder (Alnus) is also deeply appropriate — the tree that grows in water, whose wood does not rot when submerged, the tree of the threshold between land and water.
Stone
The best stones for Laguz amulets are those that carry the energy of water, intuition, and the deep unconscious: aquamarine (the stone of the sea, of emotional clarity and the courage to navigate deep waters), moonstone (the stone of the tides and the feminine cycle, of intuition and the unconscious), labradorite (the stone of the hidden depths and the magic that emerges from the threshold), and blue lace agate (the stone of gentle, flowing communication and emotional wisdom).
Water
Water itself is Laguz's most sacred material — specifically, water from a natural source: a river, a lake, a spring, the sea. Collect a small amount of natural water and use it to anoint your Laguz amulet during activation. If possible, use water from a place that feels particularly alive with Laguz's energy — a deep, still lake, a powerful river, the ocean at high tide.

Timing
Craft your Laguz amulet at the full moon — the moment when the moon's pull on the waters is strongest, when the tides are highest, when the unconscious is most fully illuminated. Any time near water — at the ocean, beside a river or lake — amplifies Laguz's energy significantly. Set up your workspace with Laguz's energy: fluid, deep, oriented toward the unconscious. Place a blue or silver candle. Have a bowl of natural water before you. Work in a quiet, dimly lit space — Laguz's wisdom comes from the depths, not from the bright surface. If possible, have the sound of water nearby — a recording of rain, a river, or the ocean amplifies Laguz's energy significantly.
Step 1: The Water Meditation
Before carving, spend a few minutes gazing into the bowl of water. Let your eyes soften and your mind quiet. Feel yourself sinking into the water's depth — not the surface, but the deep, still place beneath the surface where the currents are slow and the wisdom is ancient. Ask the water: "What do you carry from the depths? What does the unconscious want me to know?" Receive whatever arises without forcing or analyzing.
Step 2: Carving the Rune

Carve it with the fluid, unhurried movement of water finding its level — not forcing, but flowing. Step 3: Coloring the Rune
Color Laguz with deep blue (for the depth of the unconscious, the color of the deep water where the light barely reaches) or silver (for the moon's reflection on the water, the intuitive knowing that shimmers on the surface of the deep). As you apply the color, say: "I color this rune with [blue/silver], the color of deep water and intuitive wisdom. Let it be a vessel of the unconscious depths, a channel of intuitive knowing, a guide through the currents of feeling and fate."
Step 4: Activation with Water
Dip the amulet in the bowl of natural water — or sprinkle water over it three times. Say: "Laguz, I call your deep wisdom into this amulet. Let it be a vessel of the unconscious, a channel of intuition, a guide through the waters of feeling and fate. By the deep waters that carry all wisdom, this amulet is alive with your flowing power. So it is."
Step 5: The Dream Intention
Place the amulet under your pillow for the first night after crafting it. Before sleep, ask Laguz to send you a dream that reveals something important from the unconscious depths. Record whatever you dream; Laguz's first communication often comes through the dream world.
