Lamat: The Morning Star
Lamat is the eighth of the 20 Mayan Day Signs — the sign of the star, of Venus as the morning star, of the harmony and beauty that arise when all things are in right relationship with each other. In Mayan cosmology, Venus was one of the most carefully observed and most sacred celestial bodies — its cycles were tracked with extraordinary precision, and its appearances as morning star and evening star were associated with the rhythms of war, peace, planting, and harvest. To be born under the sign of Lamat is to carry the energy of Venus — the energy of beauty, harmony, abundance, and the sacred mathematics of the cosmos.
The glyph of Lamat depicts a four-petaled flower or a star — the symbol of Venus in its eight-year cycle, which traces a perfect five-pointed star against the backdrop of the zodiac. This image captures the essential quality of Lamat: a sign of sacred geometry, of the harmony that underlies all apparent chaos, of the beauty that is always present when we have eyes to see it.
