BY NICOLE LAU
The Lantern Festival ritual of lighting lanterns and releasing wishes to the full moon is one of the most beautiful and powerful manifestation practices in Chinese tradition. When thousands of glowing lanterns rise into the night sky, each carrying a heartfelt wish, they create a collective wave of intention that amplifies individual desires.
This isn't just a pretty spectacle. It's sophisticated wish magic that combines the power of fire (transformation), light (illumination), air (release), and the full moon (manifestation) into one coherent ritual.
The Traditional Lantern Lighting Ritual
The classic ritual has specific steps:
Step 1: Choose Your Lantern
- Red lanterns: Love, passion, vitality, protection
- Gold/Yellow lanterns: Wealth, prosperity, success
- Pink lanterns: Romance, friendship, harmony
- White lanterns: Clarity, peace, new beginnings
- Lotus lanterns: Spiritual growth, enlightenment
Step 2: Write Your Wish
- Use a brush or pen to write on the lantern
- Be specific and positive
- Write in present tense as if already manifested
- Some write riddles instead of direct wishes
Step 3: Light the Lantern at Moonrise
- Wait for the full moon to rise
- Light the candle or fuel source inside
- Hold the lantern as it fills with hot air
- Speak your wish aloud or silently
Step 4: Release with Intention
- When the lantern is ready to rise, release it
- Watch it ascend toward the moon
- Visualize your wish reaching the heavens
- Trust that it's been received
Step 5: Eat Tangyuan (Sweet Rice Balls)
- Round shape symbolizes completeness and reunion
- Sweet filling represents sweet life
- Eating them seals the wish
Modern Adaptations
If you can't release sky lanterns (fire hazard or illegal in some areas):
- Use paper lanterns with LED lights
- Float water lanterns on a lake or river
- Light candles in lantern holders at home
- Create a lantern altar indoors
The intention matters more than the exact method.
