Last Quarter Moon Tarot Spread: How to Let Go and Forgive with the Waning Moon
Share
The last quarter moon is the mirror image of the first quarter — where the first quarter called for decisive forward action, the last quarter calls for the equally demanding work of deliberate release and forgiveness. The half-illuminated moon now faces the opposite direction, and what it illuminates is the territory of letting go: what has not worked in this cycle, what has been held too tightly, what resentments or self-judgments or attachments are preventing the genuinely clean release that will allow the coming new moon to be a true new beginning. Forgiveness — of others, of circumstances, but most importantly of the self — is the spiritual work that the last quarter specifically asks for, because the waning cycle reveals the places where we have been unable to let go with grace, and asks us to choose to let go anyway.
The last quarter moon appears approximately 21–22 days after the new moon. The energy is quieting, reflective, and sometimes melancholy. This is an excellent time for forgiveness practices, for clearing old energy and unfinished business, for consciously completing what the cycle has not resolved, and for the kind of honest self-assessment that is most productive when done from a place of waning rather than building energy.
Last Quarter Moon Ritual Setup
Light a silver or pale gray candle for release, forgiveness, and the clearing of what is complete. Place black tourmaline, obsidian, or smoky quartz nearby as stones of clearing and protection during release work. Before the reading, take a moment to honestly identify what you are still holding from this cycle that needs to be released — a resentment, a disappointment, a self-judgment, an attachment to an outcome that did not manifest. The last quarter ritual works best when what is being released is named specifically rather than released in the abstract.
The Last Quarter Letting Go & Forgiveness Tarot Spread
A six-card spread for genuine release and forgiveness.
Card 1 — What This Cycle Has Not Resolved: What remains genuinely unfinished, unhealed, or incomplete from this lunar cycle — not as a failure, but as an honest acknowledgment of what is still present and asking for conscious attention in the waning phase?
Card 2 — What I Am Still Holding Too Tightly: What attachment, resentment, disappointment, or self-judgment is the practitioner still gripping — and what is that grip costing? What needs to be consciously loosened before the cycle can genuinely complete?
Card 3 — What Forgiveness Is Being Called For: What specific act of forgiveness — of another person, of circumstances, of the self for what was not accomplished or handled as hoped — does this last quarter specifically ask for? Where is forgiveness the missing piece of the genuine release?
Card 4 — What Genuine Release Would Create: What specific freedom, spaciousness, or possibility opens up when the release and forgiveness of Cards 2 and 3 are genuinely accomplished? What becomes available when the grip is released?
Card 5 — How to Complete What Is Unfinished: What specific action, conversation, ceremony, or acknowledgment would most effectively bring genuine completion to what Card 1 identified as unresolved? What does the last quarter ask to be done with the incompleteness?
Card 6 — The Preparation for the New Beginning: What is the practitioner being asked to clear, complete, and forgive so that the coming new moon can be approached with genuinely empty hands and a genuinely open heart — ready to receive and plant the next cycle's intention without the weight of this cycle's unfinished business?
