The Leadership Tarot Spread: Am I Ready to Lead?
Share
Leadership, in the context of this spread, does not refer exclusively to managing a team or holding an organizational title. It refers to any form of stepping forward with genuine authority to offer direction, hold space, make decisions that affect others, or take responsibility for the outcomes of a group, a project, a community, or a creative vision. Leadership is the capacity to be genuinely out in front — to occupy the position of responsibility before certainty is complete, because in genuine leadership, certainty never arrives before the commitment to lead must be made.
The question "Am I ready to lead?" is almost always the wrong question, because the answer is always "not completely," and the leadership that waits for complete readiness never arrives. The better question — the one this spread addresses — is: what is the specific nature of my leadership capacity right now, what is still developing, and what would it mean to lead from exactly where I am with exactly what I have?
The Leadership Tarot Spread
A six-card spread for assessing leadership capacity and the specific next step of leadership growth.
Card 1 — My Natural Leadership Style: Every genuine leader has a style that is native to who they are — not the management framework they were trained in, but the specific quality of presence, decision-making, and relationship that belongs to this person's actual leadership capacity. What is the authentic leadership style of this specific person?
Card 2 — What I Am Already Leading (Whether I Claim It or Not): Leadership often begins before it is acknowledged. What is the practitioner already leading — in terms of influence, direction, inspiration, or the quiet authority that others already respond to — that has not yet been consciously claimed?
Card 3 — The Fear That Has Been Keeping Me from Leading More Fully: What specific fear has been preventing the fuller expression of this person's leadership capacity? Not the generic fear of leadership, but the precise, personal version of what feels most threatening about stepping more fully into a leadership role.
Card 4 — What Still Needs to Develop: Genuine leadership development is honest about what is not yet ready. What specific capacity — in emotional intelligence, in technical knowledge, in communication, in the willingness to be responsible for others — is still in the process of developing and would benefit from deliberate attention?
Card 5 — Who Needs My Leadership: Leadership without followers is direction without destination. Who — specifically, not in the abstract — is the community, the team, the audience, or the specific people who genuinely need this person's leadership and would benefit from its fuller expression?
Card 6 — The Leadership Step I Am Ready to Take Now: Given the honest assessment of what is strong (Cards 1-2) and what is still developing (Cards 3-4), given the genuine need of those who would follow (Card 5) — what is the specific leadership step that is genuinely available and genuinely needed right now?
The Three-Step Shift Practice
Step 1: Identify one domain — in your work, your community, your creative field, or your relationships — where you have been holding back from leading more fully. Name it specifically. This is the domain in which the leadership step of Card 6 is most likely to be called for.
Step 2: Draw six cards. Read Cards 1 and 2 together as the honest foundation of existing leadership capacity. Read Card 3 and 4 together as the honest edge: where the fear and the underdevelopment live. This pairing — what is strong, what is growing — is the actual map of where you are as a leader right now.
Step 3: Take the leadership step of Card 6 this month. Name it clearly before you do it: "I am choosing to lead in this specific way, in this specific domain, with this specific group." The naming of the leadership choice is part of the practice — it transforms the instinctive behavior into a conscious commitment.
