The Legacy Tarot Spread: What Do I Want to Leave Behind?

The legacy question is the question that most career conversations defer indefinitely — the question that belongs to some future version of the self who has accomplished enough to be entitled to think about what they will leave behind. In practice, legacy is not a destination but a direction: the specific quality of contribution, the particular kind of difference, the precise way that this person's presence in the world changes it for the people they touch. The legacy is being built right now, in the current work, the current relationships, the current choices — and the legacy spread helps make the direction of that building conscious, so that it can be chosen deliberately rather than drifted into by default.

The legacy question is also, at its deepest, the question of meaning: what is the work for, ultimately, beyond the income, beyond the achievement, beyond the recognition? What is the larger purpose that the specific work of this specific life is in service of? These are not questions for the distant future — they are questions for right now, because the answers shape every current choice.

The Legacy Tarot Spread

A six-card spread for clarifying the direction of contribution and the meaning of the current work.

Card 1 — What I Am Already Contributing: Before projecting into the future of legacy, the present contribution must be honestly acknowledged. What is this person already offering, already changing, already giving to the people and the world they are in contact with? What is the legacy already being built, whether or not it has been consciously claimed?

Card 2 — What I Most Want to Be Remembered For: Not the most impressive answer, not the most modest answer, but the honest answer: what specific quality, contribution, or impact does this person most want to have left behind when the work is done? What is the legacy the authentic self actually cares about?

Card 3 — What Is Getting in the Way of That Legacy: What current pattern, belief, fear, or priority is creating distance between the current work and the legacy that is genuinely wanted? What is most consistently pulling the work away from its most meaningful direction?

Card 4 — Who the Work Is Ultimately For: Legacy is always relational — it is the effect of the work on specific people, communities, or futures. Who are the actual people — not the ideal audience, but the real human beings — whose lives are genuinely changed by this work? Who is the work ultimately in service of?

Card 5 — The Work That Will Outlast Me: What specific piece of the current work — the book, the community, the teaching, the methodology, the example lived — has the quality of genuine durability? What will continue to offer something of genuine value beyond the immediate context in which it was created?

Card 6 — The Step Toward the Legacy I Want to Leave: What is the single most important, most actionable step toward building the legacy that is genuinely wanted — not in the distant future, but beginning right now?

The Three-Step Shift Practice

Step 1: Write your own legacy statement — not an epitaph, but a direction: "I want my work to be the kind of work that..." Complete this sentence three times, with three different endings, and do not filter or edit. The unedited completions usually reveal the genuine legacy direction more clearly than the curated version.

Step 2: Draw six cards. Read Card 1 (what you are already contributing) with genuine acknowledgment: the legacy is already in progress. Read Card 5 (what will outlast you) with particular attention to what is already built rather than what still needs to be created. Legacy is often less about what must still be done than about recognizing what is already being done and doing it more deliberately.

Step 3: Take the step of Card 6 and, after taking it, name it in your journal as the first deliberate act of legacy building. The legacy is not built in a single act of heroism; it is built in the accumulation of deliberate, aligned choices over time. This is the first one named.

The Way to Deepen Your Practice: 6 Grounded Anchors

When a practice feels restless or distracted, it is rarely a lack of discipline. More often, your nervous system is simply waiting for a physical cue that it is safe to arrive.

Insight remains abstract until it touches your physical world. Reflecting As Above, So Below, a sacred practice begins wherever you set an intentional boundary—draping a woven cloth where noise stops, attuning to an acoustic frequency, or taking up raw materials to forge an implement with your own hands.

You do not need an entire sanctuary built at once. A single deliberate anchor is enough to call you back home to yourself.
