Litha Tarot Ceremony: The Peak Reading for the Summer Solstice

Litha falls at the summer solstice β€” around June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere β€” the longest day of the year and the precise astronomical moment when the sun's power reaches its absolute peak. The sun rises at its most northeasterly point, travels its longest arc across the sky, and sets at its most northwesterly point β€” the day is as long as it will ever be, and every day that follows will be, by one small increment, shorter. It is the zenith and the turning: the moment of maximum light that simultaneously contains within it the announcement of the returning dark.

Litha is the festival of the full light, and the Litha tarot ceremony works with the specific quality of standing at the peak: the recognition of what has been fully achieved in the growth season, the assessment of what has been gathered at the year's greatest abundance, and the beginning of the harvest consciousness β€” the shift from the expanding, planting, growing mode of spring into the gathering, integrating, and eventually releasing mode of the year's second half.

Setting the Altar for Litha

The Litha altar is the altar of the full sun: gold, yellow, orange, and white in abundance. Sunflowers if available β€” the solar flower par excellence. A gold or yellow candle at the altar's center representing the sun at its fullest. Citrus β€” orange and lemon slices β€” for the bright, solar quality of the season. Honey in a clear vessel, golden in the light. Crystals: citrine (the sun stone), sunstone (for the solar energy at its peak), clear quartz (for the clarity that the full light makes possible), tiger's eye (for the strength and confidence of the solar zenith). Incense: frankincense for the sacred solar fire, orange for the brightness of the peak season.

The Litha Tarot Ceremony Layout

A six-card peak and harvest spread for the summer solstice.

Card 1 β€” What Has Come to Full Light: What in your life has reached full visibility, full expression, full bloom at this solstice? What has grown from seed or spark into its fullest form this year?

Card 2 β€” The Harvest Already Available: What can you genuinely gather and celebrate right now? What has been achieved, built, or created in the growth season that is ready to be acknowledged and received?

Card 3 β€” What the Full Light Reveals: The longest day has nowhere to hide. What does the full light of this zenith moment reveal that has been less visible in the ordinary, shorter days? What truth becomes clear at the peak?

Card 4 β€” The Shadow of the Peak: Every peak contains the beginning of the descent. What shadow β€” what challenge, incompletion, or difficulty β€” is present even at the year's fullest moment? What needs honest attention even in the celebration?

Card 5 β€” What Turns Toward Harvest: The sun turns now toward its return to darkness. What in your life begins its harvest arc β€” not yet finished, but beginning the transition from growth to gathering?

Card 6 β€” The Gift of Standing at the Peak: What is the specific wisdom or gift that only the zenith offers? What can be seen from the top that cannot be seen from anywhere else on the journey?

The Three-Step Ceremony Flow

Opening: If possible, take the ceremony outdoors at the height of the day. Stand in the full sunlight and feel it on the skin as a genuine ceremony of reception: the sun at its peak giving everything it has. Speak: "I stand at the peak. I receive what the full light offers. I acknowledge what has grown. I see clearly from this height." Shuffle the deck in the sunlight with the question: "What is the fullest truth of where I am right now?"

Reading: Draw six cards and lay them in a semicircle β€” the arc of the sun's journey across the solstice sky. Read from left (sunrise) to right (sunset) as the arc of the day and the year.

Integration: Write the harvest list in your journal: everything that has been genuinely achieved, grown, built, and created in the year's first half. Be specific and be complete β€” the Litha acknowledgment of what has already been accomplished is both an act of gratitude and the energetic foundation for what the second half of the year will build.
