Mabon Tarot Ceremony: The Gratitude Reading for the Autumn Equinox

Mabon falls at the autumn equinox β€” around September 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere β€” the second moment of balance in the year, when day and night are again equal before the long descent into the dark. As Ostara is the balance point of the rising light, Mabon is the balance point of the returning dark: the harvest is substantially complete, the summer's abundance has been gathered, and the earth begins its conscious transition toward the rest and the interior journey of winter. It is the time of the second and final harvest β€” the gathering of everything that has grown, including what has not grown as expected β€” and of the genuine reckoning with the year as a complete arc.

The Mabon tarot ceremony is the ceremony of gratitude and completion: the deliberate, honest acknowledgment of everything the year has contained β€” the successes and the failures, the growth and the difficulty, the unexpected gifts and the genuine losses β€” before the Wheel turns toward the dark half and the cycle completes. Gratitude at Mabon is not the performative gratitude of denying what was difficult; it is the mature gratitude that can acknowledge the full complexity of the year and find genuine value even in what was hard.

Setting the Altar for Mabon

The Mabon altar is the most abundant altar of the year: the complete harvest displayed in its full beauty. Apples β€” the primary Mabon fruit, the fruit of wisdom and of the Otherworld. Grapes and wine. Corn and grain in their harvested forms. Nuts and seeds. The deep autumn colors: burgundy, burnt orange, deep gold, forest green, brown. Crystals: smoky quartz (for the grounding and integration of the year's experiences), citrine (for gratitude and the harvest's gold), amber (for preserved warmth and the wisdom of what has been lived), tiger's eye (for clear-eyed honest assessment). Incense: apple and cinnamon, clove and nutmeg β€” the scents of the autumn harvest kitchen.

The Mabon Tarot Ceremony Layout

A seven-card gratitude and completion spread for the autumn equinox.

Card 1 β€” The Year's Greatest Gift: Looking at the full arc of the year, what has been the single greatest gift β€” the thing you are most genuinely grateful for, that you would not trade even knowing its cost?

Card 2 β€” What the Difficulty Gave: What has the year's hardest experience given you β€” in wisdom, in depth, in the specific quality of knowing that only difficulty produces? What is genuinely yours now because of what was hard?

Card 3 β€” The Harvest to Be Celebrated: What achievement, growth, or completed intention of this year deserves genuine, unhurried celebration? What did you do well?

Card 4 β€” What Didn't Grow and What It Taught: What intention, direction, or desire didn't manifest this year, and what does the honest understanding of why it didn't grow teach about how you will plant next year?

Card 5 β€” What Must Be Released Before the Dark: What is it time to consciously let go of before the Wheel completes its turn into the dark? What from the year β€” in experience, in expectation, in identity β€” no longer belongs to the life you are living?

Card 6 β€” What to Carry Into the Dark: What β€” of wisdom, warmth, achieved quality, or genuine knowing β€” will sustain the inner life through the winter months? What is the essential provision of this harvest?

Card 7 β€” The Threshold of the New Year: Samhain is six weeks ahead β€” the witch's new year, the completion of the Wheel. What is the single most important thing to carry consciously across that threshold into the year that will begin in darkness?

The Three-Step Ceremony Flow

Opening: Sit before the abundant Mabon altar and take in the fullness of the harvest it displays. Breathe slowly and bring the entire year into your attention β€” not as a problem to be solved or a performance to be assessed, but as a complete and complex arc of experience that is genuinely yours. Speak: "I receive the full harvest of this year β€” its gifts and its difficulty, its growth and its loss. I am grateful for all of it. I am here to see it clearly and to complete the circle." Shuffle the deck with the question: "What does this year's complete arc want to show me?"

Reading: Draw seven cards and lay them in a circle, completing the cycle that Samhain began. Read them as a whole as well as in sequence β€” the Mabon reading is the reading of the full year as a unified experience, not a collection of separate events.

Integration: Write the year's gratitude list: everything you are genuinely grateful for, without exclusion of the difficult. Then write the release list: everything you are consciously completing and releasing before the new year begins. On a separate page, write the single word or phrase that most captures the essential quality of this year, for your year-end record. Place an apple and a glass of wine on the altar as the offering of the completed harvest. Rest in the fullness of what the year has been.
