  5. Don't try to change anything, just observe
  6. Complete scan takes 20-45 minutes

2. Hindu Meditation: Union with the Divine

The Foundation: Dhyana and Samadhi

Hindu meditation (dhyana) aims for union with Brahman (ultimate reality):

  • Concentration on a single point

Technique 1: Mantra Meditation (Japa)

Repetition of sacred sounds or names of God:

  1. Choose a mantra:
    • Om (the primordial sound)
    • So Hum ("I am That")
    • Om Namah Shivaya ("I bow to Shiva")
    • Hare Krishna mantra
    • Or a personal mantra from a guru
  2. Sit comfortably, spine straight
  3. Close eyes, focus on the third eye (between eyebrows)
  4. Repeat the mantra:
    • Aloud (loudest, most external)
    • Whispered (softer, more internal)
    • Mental (silent, most subtle)
  5. Coordinate with breath if desired
  6. Use mala beads (108 beads) to count repetitions

  5. See the afterimage of the flame in your mind's eye
  6. Hold the inner image as long as possible
  7. Open eyes and repeat
  8. Practice 10-20 minutes

Goal: Develop concentration, purify vision, awaken third eye

Technique 3: Self-Inquiry (Atma Vichara)

Ramana Maharshi's technique:

  1. Sit quietly
  2. Ask yourself: "Who am I?"
  3. Don't answer intellectually
  4. Trace every thought back to its source: "Who is thinking this?"
  5. Keep returning to "I"
  6. Eventually, the "I" thought dissolves
  7. What remains is pure awareness—your true Self

Goal: Realize the true Self beyond ego

3. Taoist Meditation: Harmony with the Tao

The Foundation: Wu Wei and Inner Alchemy

Taoist meditation aims to:

  • Harmonize with the Tao (the Way)
  • Cultivate and refine qi (life energy)
  • Achieve immortality (spiritual, not physical)
  • Return to the natural state (wu wei - effortless action)

Technique 1: Sitting and Forgetting (Zuowang)

Zhuangzi's meditation:

  1. Sit comfortably, spine naturally straight
  2. Forget the body: Let go of awareness of physical form
  3. Forget the mind: Let go of thoughts, concepts, knowledge
  4. Forget yourself: Let go of the sense of "I"
  5. Merge with the Tao: Become one with the natural flow
  6. Simply be, without doing

Goal: Wu wei (effortless being), union with Tao

Technique 2: Inner Smile Meditation

  1. Sit comfortably, close eyes
  2. Smile gently (even if you don't feel like it)

    • To your bones and marrow
  5. Feel each part smiling back at you

Technique 3: Microcosmic Orbit Meditation

  1. Sit with straight spine
  2. Focus on lower dantian (below navel)
  3. Gather qi there through breath
  4. When full, circulate qi:
    • Up the back (Governing Vessel/Du Mai)
    • Over the crown
    • Down the front (Conception Vessel/Ren Mai)
    • Back to lower dantian
  5. Follow the qi with your mind
  6. Breathe naturally, let qi flow
  7. Practice 20-30 minutes

Goal: Circulate and refine qi, open energy channels, build vitality

4. Sufi Meditation: Remembrance of God

The Foundation: Dhikr and Muraqaba

Sufi meditation focuses on:

  • Dhikr (remembrance of Allah)

Technique 1: Dhikr (Remembrance)

Repetition of divine names or phrases:

  1. Choose a dhikr:
    • "Allah" (God)
    • "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but God)
    • "Hu" (He - the Divine)
    • One of the 99 Names of Allah
  2. Sit comfortably or stand
  3. Repeat the dhikr:
    • Aloud (vocal dhikr)
    • Silently (heart dhikr)
  4. Coordinate with breath and heartbeat
  5. Some Sufis sway or move rhythmically
  6. Repeat 99, 300, 1000+ times
  7. Let the dhikr consume you until only God remains

Goal: Remember God constantly, dissolve ego, achieve divine presence

Technique 2: Muraqaba (Sufi Contemplation)

  1. Sit in a quiet, dark place

  7. Rest in the awareness of being watched by God

Goal: Develop God-consciousness (taqwa), purify the heart

Technique 3: Whirling (Sama)

The Mevlevi (whirling dervish) practice:

  1. Stand with arms crossed over chest
  2. Begin to spin slowly counterclockwise
  3. Extend arms: right palm up (receiving from heaven), left palm down (giving to earth)
  4. Spin continuously, eyes open but unfocused
  5. Chant "Allah" or "Hu" with each breath
  6. Become a channel between heaven and earth
  7. Spin until you transcend dizziness and enter trance

Goal: Ecstatic union with God, ego dissolution through movement

5. Christian Contemplation: Resting in Divine Presence

The Foundation: Contemplative Prayer

Christian meditation (contemplation) aims to:

  • Rest in God's presence
  • Listen rather than speak
  • Union with Christ
  • Transformation through grace

Technique 1: Centering Prayer

Developed by Thomas Keating:

  1. Choose a sacred word: "Jesus," "Abba," "Peace," "Love," etc.
  2. Sit comfortably, close eyes
  3. Silently introduce the sacred word
  4. When thoughts arise, gently return to the sacred word
  5. The word is not a mantra to repeat constantly—it's a symbol of your intention to consent to God's presence

  4. Oratio (Pray): Respond to God in prayer about what arose
  5. Contemplatio (Contemplate): Rest in silence with God, beyond words

Goal: Encounter God through scripture, move from reading to union

Technique 3: The Jesus Prayer (Hesychasm)

Eastern Orthodox practice:

  1. The prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"
  2. Sit quietly, focus on the heart
  3. Repeat the prayer continuously:
    • Coordinate with breath (first half on inhale, second half on exhale)
    • Or coordinate with heartbeat
  4. Let the prayer descend from mind to heart
  5. Eventually, the prayer becomes continuous and automatic
  6. The goal is "prayer of the heart"—unceasing prayer
