Mercury Retrograde—the infamous astrological transit when the planet of communication appears to move backward in the sky—occurs 3-4 times per year for about three weeks each time. While popular culture treats Mercury Retrograde as a cosmic disaster, it's actually a powerful period for review, reflection, and revision. The Mercury Retrograde Tarot Spread is designed to help you navigate this misunderstood transit, understand what's being revisited, and use the retrograde energy for deep inner work rather than external chaos.
This guide teaches you to work WITH Mercury Retrograde through tarot, embrace the review period, and find the hidden gifts in the backward motion.
Understanding Mercury Retrograde Energy
Mercury rules communication, technology, travel, contracts, and mental processes. When it retrogrades (appears to move backward), these areas experience disruption, delays, and the need for review.
Mercury Retrograde Qualities:
• Review, revise, and reconsider (the "Re-" period)
• Past returning (people, issues, opportunities)
• Communication breakdowns and misunderstandings
• Technology glitches and delays
• Travel disruptions
• Inner reflection and introspection
• Completing unfinished business
Shadow Period: Mercury Retrograde has a shadow period—two weeks before and after the actual retrograde when the energy is building or releasing.
Best for: Reviewing projects, revising work, reconnecting with the past, reflection, inner work, completing unfinished tasks, NOT for: signing contracts, starting new projects, major purchases, launching ventures
