Michaelmas Rituals: Dragon Slaying Ceremonies and Michael Invocation

BY NICOLE LAU

Michaelmas rituals honor Archangel Michael, invoke angelic protection, and symbolically slay the dragons that threaten us. These ceremonies, both ancient and modern, help us mark the transition into autumn's darker half with courage and divine support.

Preparation for Michaelmas

Timing: September 29th, or the nearest weekend for community celebrations

Colors: Blue (Michael's color), gold (divine light), red (courage), white (purity)

Symbols: Swords, scales, dragons, shields, armor, blackberries

Preparation: Clean your space, set up altar, gather ritual items, identify your personal dragons

The St. Michael Prayer

The traditional prayer to St. Michael is central to Michaelmas observance.

The Prayer:

"St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."

When to Pray: Morning (for daily protection), before challenges, during spiritual attack, on Michaelmas

How to Pray: Stand strong, visualize Michael's protection, speak with conviction

The Dragon-Slaying Ceremony

A symbolic ritual for conquering your personal dragons.

You'll need: Paper, pen, sword (or knife, stick, or symbolic sword), fire-safe bowl, blue candle

The ritual:

  1. Identify your dragons: fears, addictions, toxic patterns, limiting beliefs
  2. Write each dragon on separate paper
  3. Light blue candle
  4. Hold sword and speak: "St. Michael, lend me your courage. Help me slay these dragons that threaten my soul."
  5. Take first dragon paper, read it aloud
  6. Stab it with the sword (or cut it)
  7. Declare: "I slay you, [dragon name]. You have no power over me. By Michael's sword, you are defeated."
  8. Burn the paper
  9. Repeat for each dragon
  10. When all are burned, scatter ashes to the wind or bury them

The Armor of God Ritual

Based on Ephesians 6:10-18, putting on spiritual armor.

The ritual:

  1. Stand in warrior pose
  2. Visualize each piece of armor as you name it:
  3. "I put on the belt of truth" (touch waist)
  4. "I put on the breastplate of righteousness" (touch chest)
  5. "I put on the shoes of peace" (touch feet)
  6. "I take up the shield of faith" (left arm)
  7. "I take up the helmet of salvation" (touch head)
  8. "I take up the sword of the Spirit" (right hand)
  9. Feel fully armored and protected
  10. Invoke Michael: "St. Michael, guard me in this armor. Make me a warrior for good."

You'll need: Fresh blackberries (picked before September 29th), blue candle, bowl

The ritual:

  1. Place blackberries in bowl
  2. Light blue candle
  3. Hold hands over berries: "These berries, picked before the devil's touch, hold the sweetness of summer and the protection of Michael. I consume them for strength and protection."
  4. Eat berries mindfully, feeling their protective power
  5. Save a few to place on your altar

The Sword Blessing

Blessing a sword (or knife, athame, or symbolic weapon) for protection.

You'll need: Sword or blade, holy water or salt water, blue candle, incense

The ritual:

  1. Light candle and incense
  2. Hold sword horizontally
  3. Pass through incense smoke: "By air, I purify this blade"
  4. Pass over candle flame: "By fire, I empower this blade"
  5. Sprinkle with water: "By water, I bless this blade"
  6. Touch to earth/salt: "By earth, I ground this blade"
  7. Hold up to sky: "St. Michael, bless this sword. Make it an instrument of divine protection, a weapon against evil, a tool for justice. May it cut through illusion and defend truth."
  8. Keep the blessed sword on your altar or carry it for protection

The Protection Circle Ritual

Creating a protective boundary with Michael's help.

You'll need: Salt, blue candles (4), sword or athame

The ritual:

  1. Cast circle with salt
  2. Place blue candle at each cardinal direction
  3. Light candles
  4. Stand in center with sword
  5. Point sword to East: "St. Michael, guard the East"

  9. Point up: "St. Michael, guard above"
  10. Point down: "St. Michael, guard below"
  11. Stand in center: "I am protected on all sides, above and below. No evil can enter this sacred space."

The Michaelmas Feast Ritual

Blessing and sharing the traditional Michaelmas goose (or substitute).

The blessing:

"Blessed are you, Lord our God, who provides this feast. As we share this meal on Michaelmas, we remember St. Michael's victory over evil. May this food strengthen us for our own battles. May we have courage like Michael, protection like his shield, and victory like his sword. Amen."

The feast: Share with family or community, telling dragon-slaying stories, discussing personal victories

The Courage Invocation

Calling on Michael for courage to face specific challenges.

The invocation:

"St. Michael, warrior of God, I call upon your courage. I face [specific challenge]. I am afraid, but I choose to be brave. Lend me your strength. Stand beside me in this battle. Help me slay this dragon. Give me your warrior spirit. I will not back down. I will not surrender. With your help, I will prevail. Amen."

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
