BY NICOLE LAU
Michaelmas rituals honor Archangel Michael, invoke angelic protection, and symbolically slay the dragons that threaten us. These ceremonies, both ancient and modern, help us mark the transition into autumn's darker half with courage and divine support.
Preparation for Michaelmas
Timing: September 29th, or the nearest weekend for community celebrations
Colors: Blue (Michael's color), gold (divine light), red (courage), white (purity)
Symbols: Swords, scales, dragons, shields, armor, blackberries
Preparation: Clean your space, set up altar, gather ritual items, identify your personal dragons
The St. Michael Prayer
The traditional prayer to St. Michael is central to Michaelmas observance.
The Prayer:
"St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."
When to Pray: Morning (for daily protection), before challenges, during spiritual attack, on Michaelmas
How to Pray: Stand strong, visualize Michael's protection, speak with conviction
The Dragon-Slaying Ceremony
A symbolic ritual for conquering your personal dragons.
You'll need: Paper, pen, sword (or knife, stick, or symbolic sword), fire-safe bowl, blue candle
The ritual:

- Write each dragon on separate paper

- Repeat for each dragon
- When all are burned, scatter ashes to the wind or bury them

- "I put on the shoes of peace" (touch feet)
- "I take up the shield of faith" (left arm)
- "I take up the helmet of salvation" (touch head)

The Michaelmas Feast Ritual
Blessing and sharing the traditional Michaelmas goose (or substitute).
The blessing:
"Blessed are you, Lord our God, who provides this feast. As we share this meal on Michaelmas, we remember St. Michael's victory over evil. May this food strengthen us for our own battles. May we have courage like Michael, protection like his shield, and victory like his sword. Amen."
The feast: Share with family or community, telling dragon-slaying stories, discussing personal victories
The Courage Invocation
Calling on Michael for courage to face specific challenges.
The invocation:
"St. Michael, warrior of God, I call upon your courage. I face [specific challenge]. I am afraid, but I choose to be brave. Lend me your strength. Stand beside me in this battle. Help me slay this dragon. Give me your warrior spirit. I will not back down. I will not surrender. With your help, I will prevail. Amen."
