The Money Story Tarot Spread: What Do I Actually Believe About Money?
Share
Everyone has a money story — a set of beliefs, inherited and acquired, about what money is, how it flows, who gets it and who doesn't, what it means about a person to have it or to lack it, and what will happen if it is pursued directly or rejected entirely. Most of this story operates below the level of conscious awareness, which is why people can hold one belief about money consciously ("I deserve to be paid well") while acting from a completely different one at the level of behavior (consistently undercharging, avoiding financial conversations, spending before saving, refusing to ask for what the work is worth). The money story spread does not help you manage your finances. It helps you see the story that is managing them for you.
This is among the most transformative spreads in the career and abundance series, because the money story is the foundation on which all of the outer work — the pricing decisions, the negotiations, the investments, the willingness to receive — is built. A misaligned money story will undermine every external effort. A money story that has been seen clearly and consciously updated can change the entire shape of a person's financial life.
The Money Story Tarot Spread
A six-card deep-dive spread for uncovering the unconscious beliefs that govern your relationship with money.
Card 1 — The Money Belief I Inherited: What was the money story in the family of origin? What did the household's relationship with money — its abundance or its scarcity, the fear or the ease, the secrecy or the openness around it — teach about what money is and what having or not having it means?
Card 2 — What I Was Taught Money Says About a Person: Rich people are... poor people are... people who want money are... people who don't care about money are... What did the early environment teach about what a person's financial status reveals about their character or worth? This card often surfaces the moral framework around money that most powerfully shapes financial behavior.
Card 3 — The Fear That Runs My Financial Decisions: Beneath every financial pattern is a fear. What specific fear — of poverty, of judgment, of being too much, of being not enough, of what success would require — is most consistently running the financial decisions being made?
Card 4 — The Story I Tell Myself About Why I Don't Have More: What is the current operating narrative about why the financial abundance desired has not yet arrived? Is it the economy, the industry, the timing, the luck, the unworthiness, the complexity of the work? What story has been assigned to the gap between the financial reality and the financial desire?
Card 5 — What Money Actually Means to Me (Underneath the Story): Beneath the inherited beliefs and the fear-driven narratives, what does money genuinely represent to this specific person — at the level of what it would actually enable? Freedom, security, the ability to contribute, the capacity to create without constraint? This card reveals the authentic desire that the money story has been obscuring.
Card 6 — The New Money Story That Is Available: Given everything the previous cards have shown, what money story is available to be consciously chosen — not the inherited one, not the fear-driven one, but the one that this person would write for themselves if they were writing it deliberately? What does the updated relationship with money look like?
The Three-Step Shift Practice
Step 1: Complete this sentence five times, writing whatever comes without editing: "Money is..." Then read what you've written. The money story is often most visible in the automatic completions of that sentence.
Step 2: Draw six cards. Read them as a progression: the story you inherited (Cards 1-2), the fear that maintains it (Cards 3-4), and the new story that is possible (Cards 5-6). This arc is the actual arc of money story work.
Step 3: Write the new money story from Card 6 in the present tense as a single paragraph, as specifically as possible: not "I believe in abundance" but the actual, concrete, specific version of what a healthy, conscious, authentic relationship with money looks like in this life. Read it aloud. This is the beginning of the rewrite.
