Nadis: The 72,000 Energy Channels Beyond Chakras
BY NICOLE LAU
Beyond the seven chakras lies an intricate network of 72,000 energy channels called nadis—the rivers of prana that flow through your subtle body, nourishing every cell, every organ, every aspect of your being.
While chakras are the power centers, nadis are the distribution system. They're the invisible highways that carry life force throughout your entire energy anatomy.
Understanding nadis is essential for advanced energy work, pranayama practice, and kundalini awakening.
What Are Nadis?
Definition: Subtle energy channels that carry prana (life force)
Number: 72,000 (some texts say 350,000)
Location: Throughout the etheric body
Function: Distribute prana to physical and subtle bodies
Origin: Yogic and tantric traditions of India
The Word Nadi
From Sanskrit, meaning "flow," "channel," or "river." Nadis are the rivers of life force flowing through you.
The Nadi System
How Nadis Work
Nadis absorb prana from:
- Breath (primary source)
- Food and water
- Sunlight
- Earth energy
- Cosmic energy
They distribute prana to:
- Physical organs and systems
- Chakras
- Subtle bodies
- Consciousness itself
Nadis vs Meridians
Nadis (Yogic): 72,000 channels, carry prana, focus on spiritual development
Meridians (Chinese): 12 main channels, carry chi, focus on physical health
Similarity: Both are subtle energy pathways
Difference: Different systems, different maps, both valid
The Three Main Nadis
1. Sushumna Nadi
Location: Central channel running through the spine
Path: From base of spine (root chakra) to crown of head
Color: White, gold, or brilliant light
Function: Spiritual awakening, kundalini pathway
Quality: Neutral, balanced, transcendent
When Active:
- Deep meditation states
- Spiritual experiences
- Kundalini rising
- Unity consciousness
- Both nostrils breathing equally
2. Ida Nadi
Location: Left side of body, spiraling around sushumna
Path: Starts at left nostril, spirals down to base of spine
Color: Silver, blue, or pale white (lunar)
Function: Cooling, calming, introspective energy
Quality: Feminine, yin, receptive, lunar
Governs:
- Left side of body
- Right brain hemisphere
- Parasympathetic nervous system
- Rest, digest, restore
- Intuition and creativity
When Dominant:
- Left nostril breathing more
- Feeling calm, introspective
- Creative or intuitive states
- Need for rest
3. Pingala Nadi
Location: Right side of body, spiraling around sushumna
Path: Starts at right nostril, spirals down to base of spine
Color: Red, gold, or bright orange (solar)
Function: Heating, energizing, active energy
Quality: Masculine, yang, active, solar
Governs:
- Right side of body
- Left brain hemisphere
- Sympathetic nervous system
- Action, digestion, metabolism
- Logic and analysis
When Dominant:
- Right nostril breathing more
- Feeling energized, active
- Analytical or focused states
- Ready for action
Balancing Ida and Pingala
Why Balance Matters
When ida and pingala are balanced, sushumna opens. When sushumna opens, spiritual awakening becomes possible.
Signs of Imbalance
Ida dominant (too much): Lethargy, depression, oversensitivity, spaciness
Pingala dominant (too much): Anxiety, aggression, burnout, insomnia
Balanced: Calm energy, mental clarity, emotional stability, spiritual openness
Balancing Practices
Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing):
1. Close right nostril, inhale through left (ida)
2. Close left nostril, exhale through right (pingala)
3. Inhale through right (pingala)
4. Close right, exhale through left (ida)
5. Repeat for 5-10 minutes
This directly balances ida and pingala
Yoga Asana: Physical postures balance energy flow
Meditation: Calms both nadis, opens sushumna
Pranayama: All breathing practices work with nadis
The 14 Important Nadis
Beyond the main three, 14 nadis are considered especially important:
1. Sushumna - Central spiritual channel
2. Ida - Lunar, left
3. Pingala - Solar, right
4. Gandhari - Ends at left eye
5. Hastijihva - Ends at right eye
6. Pusha - Ends at right ear
7. Yashasvini - Ends at left ear
8. Alambusha - Ends at mouth
9. Kuhu - Ends at genitals
10. Shankhini - Ends at anus
11-14. Others - Various functions
Nadis and Chakras
The Intersection Points
Chakras form where nadis intersect. The more nadis that cross, the more powerful the chakra.
Root Chakra: Where ida, pingala, and sushumna meet
Other Chakras: Major intersection points of multiple nadis
Minor Chakras: Smaller intersection points (hands, feet, etc.)
Nadi Granthis (Knots)
Three major blockages in sushumna that must be opened for kundalini to rise:
Brahma Granthi: At root chakra - attachment to physical/material
Vishnu Granthi: At heart chakra - attachment to emotions/relationships
Rudra Granthi: At third eye - attachment to psychic powers/ego
Clearing and Activating Nadis
Pranayama (Breath Work)
The primary method for nadi purification:
Nadi Shodhana: Purifies and balances
Kapalabhati: Clears blockages forcefully
Bhastrika: Energizes nadis
Ujjayi: Heats and activates
Sitali: Cools and calms
Yoga Asana
Physical postures stretch, compress, and stimulate nadis, encouraging prana flow.
Meditation
Quiets the mind, allowing prana to flow smoothly through nadis without mental interference.
Mantra
Sound vibrations clear nadis. The mantra "OM" is especially powerful for sushumna.
Visualization
Visualize light flowing through nadis, clearing blockages, energizing the entire system.
Signs of Clear Nadis
- High vitality and energy
- Mental clarity and focus
- Emotional balance
- Strong immune system
- Ease in meditation
- Spiritual experiences
- Balanced breath (both nostrils equal)
- Feeling of lightness and flow
Signs of Blocked Nadis
- Chronic fatigue
- Mental fog or confusion
- Emotional instability
- Physical illness
- Difficulty meditating
- Feeling stuck or stagnant
- One nostril always blocked
- Lack of spiritual progress
Nadis and Kundalini
The Kundalini Path
Kundalini energy rises through sushumna nadi when:
- Ida and pingala are balanced
- Nadis are purified
- Chakras are open
- The three granthis are pierced
Preparing the Nadis
Before attempting kundalini awakening, nadis must be purified through years of pranayama, yoga, and meditation. Unprepared nadis can't handle kundalini's intensity.
Working with Your Nadis
Daily Nadi Practice
- Morning: Nadi Shodhana (5-10 min) to balance
-
Throughout day: Notice which nostril is dominant
3. Evening: Gentle pranayama to clear the day's energy
4. Before sleep: Left nostril breathing (ida) for rest
Nadi Awareness Meditation
- Sit comfortably, close eyes
- Visualize the three main nadis
- See sushumna as white light up your spine
- See ida as silver-blue spiraling on the left
- See pingala as golden-red spiraling on the right
- Breathe and watch prana flow through them
- Notice any blockages or imbalances
- Breathe light into blocked areas
Final Thoughts
The nadis are the invisible infrastructure of your energy body. Like rivers nourishing the land, they carry life force to every part of your being. When nadis are clear and balanced, you experience vitality, clarity, and spiritual openness. When blocked, everything suffers.
The breath is your primary tool for working with nadis. Every conscious breath purifies, balances, and energizes these subtle channels. This is why pranayama is considered essential in yoga—it's nadi maintenance.
Tend to your nadis, and they will carry you to awakening.
