The Next Chapter Tarot Spread: What Does My Career Transition Look Like?
Share
Career transitions are among the most energetically significant passages of an adult life — moments when the identity that has been organized around a particular form of work must loosen, reorganize, and reform around something new, before the new thing is yet clear enough to provide the certainty the ego requires. The next chapter spread is made for this specific threshold: the moment when the current chapter has clearly ended, or is clearly ending, and the next one has not yet begun. It does not predict the next chapter in detail — that would require a certainty that the threshold does not provide. It maps the energetic terrain of the transition: what is ending, what is needed for the crossing, what is beginning to emerge, and what the direction of the next chapter is.
This spread is for the person who has left a job or is about to, who is pivoting a business, who is stepping back from one form of work to create space for something not yet named, or who feels the unmistakable pull of a next chapter without yet knowing what it contains.
The Next Chapter Tarot Spread
A six-card career transition spread for navigating the threshold between chapters.
Card 1 — What This Chapter Has Taught Me: Before moving into the next chapter, the current or closing chapter must be genuinely honored for what it has provided. What has this chapter of work — however difficult, however limiting, however clearly it is ending — genuinely taught you? What do you carry forward that this chapter gave you?
Card 2 — What Must Be Released: What from the current or closing chapter must be deliberately released before the next one can begin? Not just the job title or the industry, but the identity, the belief, the way of operating, the story about yourself that belonged to the chapter that is ending and does not belong to the next one.
Card 3 — What Is Already Emerging: Even in the uncertainty of the threshold, something is already beginning to take shape. What direction, quality, or form of work is already stirring beneath the surface of the transition? What is the first signal of the next chapter's territory?
Card 4 — What the Transition Needs from Me: What does this specific transition require of the practitioner in order to complete successfully? What quality — of patience, of courage, of action, of surrender — does the crossing specifically ask for?
Card 5 — The Resource Available: What specific resource — in skill, in relationship, in financial circumstance, in developed capacity — is available right now to support the transition? What does this person already have that the next chapter can build on?
Card 6 — The Direction of the Next Chapter: Not the full map of the destination, but the direction — the quality, the orientation, the essential character of what the next chapter holds. What is the next chapter moving toward?
The Three-Step Shift Practice
Step 1: Write a brief "closing ceremony" for the chapter that is ending. Give it a title. Name three things it taught you and three things you are choosing to leave behind. This is not a performance; it is a genuine acknowledgment of the chapter as complete.
Step 2: Draw six cards and read Card 3 (what is already emerging) with particular attention. In a genuine transition, the next chapter is always already beginning to show itself — in the interests that have quietly intensified, in the conversations that have been most alive, in the work that has felt most effortless. The cards often confirm what is already being felt but not yet trusted.
Step 3: Take one action in the direction of Card 6 before the week ends. The transition becomes a next chapter not through planning but through the first genuine steps toward what is emerging.
