The alchemists called this Nigredo—the blackening, the putrefaction, the death before rebirth. And they knew something crucial: this darkness isn't failure. It's the first essential stage of transformation. You can't skip it. You can't avoid it. You must go through it to reach the gold (Rubedo).

The Entrepreneur's Dark Night (Nigredo)

What Triggers Nigredo

Common business triggers:

• Major failure or loss
• Business collapse or near-collapse
• Profound disillusionment
• Identity crisis ("Who am I if not this?")
• Burnout and exhaustion
• Loss of purpose or meaning
• Everything you built falling apart

The deeper truth: Nigredo often comes when you've outgrown your current form but haven't yet released it. The old must die for the new to be born.

Signs You're in Nigredo

• Everything feels dark and hopeless

How to Navigate Nigredo

1. Don't try to escape it
The darkness has purpose. Trying to skip it only prolongs it.

Don't cling to the old form. Release what's being burned away.

3. Sit in the darkness
Don't rush to fix or solve. Sometimes you must simply be in the void.

4. Trust the process
This is Stage 1 of transformation, not the end. Albedo follows Nigredo.

You don't have to go through the dark night alone. Get help.

What's being burned away? What's the darkness teaching you?
